Welcome to National Pumpkin Day!

National Pumpkin Day celebrates pumpkins, a cultivar of the squash plant that is native to North America. Its name is derived from the Greek word "pepon", which means large melon. Pumpkins have long since been associated with the harvest season, and both Halloween and Thanksgiving. During Halloween many people pick or buy pumpkins—most often the Connecticut Field pumpkin—and carve them into jack-o'-lanterns. Vegetables such as turnips have long been carved in Ireland and Britain, and the practice of carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns stemmed from the story of Stingy Jack. Pumpkins were one of the squashes long eaten by Native Americans, which they introduced to Europeans shortly after the settlers arrived in the Americas. In fact, pumpkin pie was served at one of the Pilgrim's first Thanksgivings in the early 1620's, and is now a staple of Thanksgiving meals. A smaller strain of the Connecticut Field pumpkin, the Small Sugar pumpkin, is often used for pumpkin pie, but most Americans buy pie filling or puree in cans instead of getting it from fresh pumpkins. Although most Americans only use fresh pumpkins for carving, there has been a growing interest in pumpkin flavored foods in recent years, which can be attributed to Starbucks' introduction of pumpkin spice latte in 2003.

Mike Williams Sets Commitment Date (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse basketball recruiting target Mike Williams, a class of 2023 guard, has set his commitment date. Williams will announce on November 6th following official visits to Clemson, DePaul, LSU, Syracuse and Wake Forest along with an unofficial visit to VCU.

Williams officially visited the Orange the weekend of September 16th. Among the highlights of that trip was hanging out with the players and coaches at Jim Boeheim's house.

"It showed how much of a family those guys were," Williams said. "I'm just a recruit and he invited us over to his house, eat dinner with his family, have conversations with his wife and stuff. That was something that you couldn't imagine."

He was also in attendance with the football team beat Purdue in thrilling fashion.

"All of it (atmosphere, fans, game day experience) was great," Williams said. "They said that the same fans that go to the football game are at the basketball games. That was a great experience as well being able to be in the new Dome. Seeing a football game live was a great experience."

Upstate New York resident Scott Salvadore won the 2022 USA Mullet Championship with his hair known as “The Lord’s Drapes.” (NBC video still)

Upstate NY man wins competition for ‘best mullet’ in America (PS; Herbert)

If you want to find the best mullet in America, head to Upstate New York.

Scott Salvadore, of Stillwater, N.Y., won the title of “America’s Best Mullet” in the 2022 USA Mullet Championship on Saturday, according to the “Today” show. Salvadore beat out 600 other contestants thanks to his business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back hairdo that he dubbed “The Lord’s Drapes.”

Salvadore received 3,740 votes out of nearly 30,000 online votes in the national competition, beating out finalists Dalton Cleghorn (“Mulletmania”) in Ohio and Brandon Hernandez (”Texas Tailgate”) from Texas. All three appeared on NBC’s Saturday morning show as USA Mullet Championship founder Kevin Begola announced Salvadore won first prize, which includes $2,500, sponsorship packages and bragging rights for the best mullet in the U.S.

The mullet was among the most popular hairstyles in the 1980s, but has seen a resurgence in popularity with famous singers like Morgan Wallen and Lil Nas X rockin’ the look, along with fashion models like Ella Emhoff, the daughter of Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff. Iconic “hockey haircuts” of short hair in front and long flowing locks in the back have included David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, Mel Gibson, Patrick Swayze, Joan Jett, Billy Ray Cyrus, Wayne Gretzky and David Spade’s “Joe Dirt.” The hairstyle existed for centuries, but wasn’t known as a “mullet” until the Beastie Boys’ 1994 song “Mullet Head.”

Salvadore, 34, told the “Today” show that he previously cut off his mullet for his girlfriend, but grew it back after they got married.
