Welcome to International Girls Day!

Created by Kappa Delta, International Girls Day celebrates girls with all types of interests and abilities and is for helping them build their confidence to reach their full potential. The theme of the day is "She Can Do Anything," which reminds girls that there is no limit to what they can achieve—they will be tomorrow's leaders, CEOs, inventors, and entrepreneurs. The Kappa Delta sorority holds events with girls and Girl Scouts in their communities to help girls build confidence and set goals.

Boeheim reaches another career milestone. How SU celebrates is still thorny (PS; $; Axe)

When Jim Boeheim won his 900th college basketball game, all of them as head coach of the Syracuse Orange, the school and its fans celebrated.

It happened on Dec. 18, 2012 with a win over Detroit. SU center Baye Moussa Keita held up a sign that said, simply, “900.” Boeheim’s family and his team clustered on the court post-game and watched a video from the floor of the Carrier Dome.

It was a rare feat. To this day, only six men’s Division I college basketball coaches have won at least 900 games.

The counting, however, would become more complicated for the Syracuse coach.

After a years-long investigation, the NCAA in 2015 sanctioned the SU program and lopped 101 wins off Boeheim’s victory tally when it determined SU violated NCAA rules.

The penalty has muddied how the school celebrates a milestone that just one other Division I men’s basketball coach has achieved. It created a curious backdrop to last week’s win against Lehigh that will linger through Tuesday night’s game against Colgate.

Boeheim, whose win total trails only Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, could reach 1,000 career victories, according to the NCAA.

But the Syracuse community already celebrated that feat on Feb. 4, 2017. The Orange beat No. 9 Virginia and Boeheim had “unofficially” won his 1,000th game.

Fans stormed the floor and held up signs celebrating the Syracuse coach. The NCAA, at that point, acknowledged 899 Boeheim victories, but the general sentiment — certainly in the Carrier Dome — was that Boeheim had been the architect of 1,000 wins.

“I know how many wins I’ve had,” Boeheim said at the time. “I’m very proud of that, very proud of that.”

All of which brings us to last Monday in the JMA Wireless Dome. There, Syracuse defeated Lehigh to paste 1,100 wins on the Boeheim resume. There were no signs, no court stormings, no fanfare. After the game, Boeheim did not want to discuss the milestone.

The school offered only a suggestive take on the night.

Syracuse Basketball: Judah Mintz stellar in debut, and experts took notice (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball has only played one game, but freshman point guard Judah Mintz certainly didn’t disappoint in his debut for the Orange.

The 2022 four-star guard, part of an intriguing six-member class for the ‘Cuse in this cycle, did a lot of positive things in his first contest for the Orange, earning him praise from national pundits while continuing to garner extremely early NBA Draft buzz.

It’s of course no guarantee whatsoever that the 6-foot-3 Mintz will only suit up for Syracuse basketball in just the 2022-23 campaign. He could be a one-and-done player, but he also could stay on the Hill for at least two seasons.

Either way, scouting analysts and NBA Draft experts seem to believe that Judah Mintz has a lot of tools in his arsenal that make him a legitimate pro prospect.

But let’s not rush Judah Mintz out of Central New York anytime soon and see how he fares throughout the rest of the 2022-23 stanza.

Syracuse basketball freshman point guard Judah Mintz was great in his first encounter.

In the 2022-23 season opener for the ‘Cuse, a 90-72 home victory for Syracuse basketball over Patriot League member Lehigh, Mintz proved the Orange’s third-leading scorer, behind senior guard Joe Girard III and senior center Jesse Edwards.

Per ESPN statistics, Judah Mintz in 26 minutes connected on 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, finishing with 16 points, three assists, three turnovers and one steal.

Mintz didn’t attempt a 3-pointer versus Lehigh, but recruiting analysts and scouts have said that he is a credible shooter from long range. For me, though, what I believe are Mintz’s strengths include his court vision, his facilitating for others, his ability to carve his way into the lane, and his proficiency at scoring in both the mid-range and near the basket.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star guys for Adam Weitsman to call for $1M in NIL (itlh; Adler)

Businessman and top SU booster Adam Weitsman has already reached out to a pair of 2024 five-star players who hold Syracuse basketball scholarship offers about potentially lucrative name, image and likeness opportunities.

We’ll certainly continue to stay in touch with Weitsman about his discussions with 2024 five-star guard Ian Jackson, who received an Orange offer this past April, and 2024 five-star point guard Elliot Cadeau, who landed a Syracuse basketball offer about a year ago and recently put the ‘Cuse in his top six.

Per media reports from not too long ago, Weitsman plans to offer $1 million annually to one five-star football player and one five-star basketball player to represent his companies.

Adam Weitsman is also working to put together NIL opportunities for a high-school women’s basketball player and perhaps other female student-athletes.

In a recent phone interview, Weitsman said that he’d like these recruits, if NIL agreements are signed, to primarily focus on civic and non-profit engagements in the Central New York region, rather than marketing his companies.

There are other five-stars out there, who may or may not have Syracuse basketball offers, whom Adam Weitsman should contact, too.

A lot of 2023 prospects are already committing and signing their national letters of intents with colleges and universities across the country.

While the Orange has yet to secure a commitment in the senior class, my own personal opinion is that Weitsman should focus his discussions with the parents or guardians of five-star basketball players in the 2024 and 2025 classes.

As we’ve noted, Adam Weitsman is not discussing Syracuse basketball or any other college team with these high-school prospects, because his NIL offers cannot be used as a form of inducement (“pay-for-play”) for a recruit to commit to a specific college or university, including SU.

Here are a few top-flight 2024 and 2025 players who Weitsman may want to consider for his NIL deals. We won’t know what the Syracuse basketball roster will look like in the future, but positional needs could entail point guards/combo guards, as well as power forwards/centers.

2024 Cycle

Derik Queen
The big man from Baltimore holds a Syracuse basketball offer, which he picked up in October of 2021. The 6-foot-9 power forward/center is rated as five stars, a top-20 overall player, and a top-three big man, per some recruiting services.

Queen is primed for a monster junior season at the powerhouse Montverde Academy in Montverde, Fla. Per 247Sports, he recently took official visits to both Maryland and Indiana.

Yves Missi
The 6-foot-11 center was offered by Syracuse basketball in December of last year. Like Queen, he is one of the top centers in the 2024 class.

Some recruiting services rank Missi as five stars, and he’s actually in the top 10 nationally, according to On3. In the 2022-23 stanza, Missi is competing with an excellent team, Prolific Prep in Napa Valley, Calif.

Per reports, he has taken an official visit to Baylor as well as made unofficial trips to Stanford and UConn.

Tahaad Pettiford
Over the summer, we noted that the Orange was reportedly showing interest in the 6-foot Pettiford, who at the time of this writing was ranked as five stars and the No. 2 point guard across the country in the 2024 class, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Pettiford is a junior at Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, N.J. He took an official visit to Auburn not too long ago. I’m not aware of Syracuse basketball having offered a scholarship to Pettiford at this juncture.

Vyctorius Miller
This top-flight shooting guard, according to several recruiting Web sites, already has an offer from the ‘Cuse. The 247Sports Composite, when I penned this column, placed the 6-foot-5 Miller as five stars, No. 16 nationwide and No. 4 at his position in the 2024 cycle.

Miller is a junior at the juggernaut AZ Compass Prep School in Chandler, Ariz. Per some reports, a few suitors that may be in line to land official visits from Miller include Kansas, Gonzaga and Texas.

Carmelo Anthony's son, Kiyan, gets Syracuse basketball offer (ESPN; Medcalf)

Twenty years ago, future NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony led Syracuse to the national championship at the end of the 2002-03 season.

On Sunday, Kiyan Anthony, the son of the Most Outstanding Player in the 2003 NCAA tournament, received an offer from the Orange.

Beyond blessed to receive an offer from Syracuse University! #GOORANGE pic.twitter.com/uBMq5Kwdv7
— Kiyan Anthony (@kiyananthony) November 13, 2022

The younger Anthony is a 6-foot-5 wing in the class of 2025 who attends Christ the King High School in New York. Videos on YouTube show him working out with his father from the time he was young.

Now, he has a chance to attend a school that his father changed 20 years ago.
After his magical run, Carmelo Anthony entered the NBA draft but always stayed connected to Jim Boeheim and Syracuse. In 2014, he made a $3 million donation toward the creation of the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center, where Syracuse's men's and women's programs practice. The school plans to honor the 2003 national title team this season on the 20th anniversary of its run.

Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade -- all top-five picks in the 2003 NBA draft -- have all had sons who became basketball prospects. Zaire Wade played in the G League last season after his high school career ended. Bronny James is ranked 34th in the 2023 class by ESPN. Now, Kiyan Anthony could follow his father to Syracuse.

Carmelo Anthony & Kiyan Anthony Visit Syracuse University

Syracuse Basketball: Carmelo Anthony 4-star son wants SU ‘top of my list’ (itlh; Adler)

Alright, Syracuse basketball coaches, enough messing around – please offer a scholarship asap to the son of Orange legend Carmelo Anthony.

As we’ve noted several times lately, ‘Cuse coaches are reportedly showing interest in 2025 four-star prospect Kiyan Anthony, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from New York City who is seeing his national rankings climb and offer sheet grow.

Carmelo Anthony, a long-time NBA star who led the Orange to the program’s only national title in 2003, was in the house on Saturday night when Syracuse football hosted top-25 Florida State.

— Syracuse Athletics (@Cuse) November 13, 2022

Understandably, he received a huge applause from the crowd inside the JMA Wireless Dome. And, per a tweet from Cuse Sports Talk, Kiyan Anthony may have spent some time during that game chatting with Syracuse basketball assistant coaches Adrian Autry and Gerry McNamara. Just saying.

Syracuse basketball needs to offer the son of Carmelo Anthony, a four-star SG.

In a brief TikTok video that we recently came across, Kiyan Anthony discussed his recruiting process at present. He said he may look at some unofficial visits by the end of this year, and he plans to schedule some official visits during his junior season.

Carmelo Anthony's Son Makes A Huge Announcement (SI; Stinar)

Carmelo Anthony is one of the best players in the history of basketball.

He is a ten-time NBA All-Star, National Champion and three-time Olympic Gold Medalist.

In 2002, he won the national title with Syracuse men's basketball and following that season (his freshman year), he declared for the 2003 NBA Draft.

On Sunday, his son (Kiyan) made a huge announcement on Twitter.

Kiyan: "Beyond blessed to receive an offer from Syracuse University! #GOORANGE"

Jim Boeheim, who coached his father, is still the head coach of the Orange.

Kiyan is only 15 years old, so he has a long way to go during his high school career and will likely get many more offers over the next few seasons.

According to Verbal Commits, he already has offers from Manhattan, Memphis, George Mason and Bryant, in addition to Syracuse.

247 Sports has him ranked as the 62nd best player in the class of 2025 (14th ranked shooting guard), but that list is likely to change over the next few years since their graduation date is nearly three years away.

They also have him listed as 6'3", 165 LBS.

On Saturday, the Syracuse Football team hosted Florida State, and Carmelo was seen on the field greeted with a big applause.

Syracuse Basketball: No 2023 commits ‘surprising to say the least’ – expert (itlh; Adler)

Given the Orange’s six-member 2022 class and a young big-man transfer that it brought in this past off-season, it was always fairly likely that Syracuse basketball would end up having a small 2023 recruiting cycle.

To me, though, there’s a difference between small and zilch. To date, the ‘Cuse has offered scholarships to more than 20 players in the senior class, and Syracuse basketball has yet to score a commitment.

One of the latest misses for the Orange was 2023 four-star guard Mike Williams from Maryland, who picked LSU over the ‘Cuse and several other finalists.

Another 2023 guy who holds a Syracuse basketball offer, five-star guard D.J. Wagner from New Jersey, is expected to make his commitment decision soon, and analyst buzz points toward blue-blood program Kentucky.

Syracuse basketball doesn’t have one single commitment in the 2023 class.

The Orange, as we’ve noted several times lately, remains in the hunt for 2023 big man William Patterson from New York City, who has the ‘Cuse in his top three and may take an official visit to Syracuse basketball in the future, according to media reports.

Beyond that, however, there doesn’t seem to be much doing for the Orange in the senior cycle, and a national analyst recently offered some thoughts on the state of the team’s 2023 recruiting efforts.

’s Rob Cassidy recently noted in an article that Patterson is an option for Syracuse basketball in 2023, “but things look murky beyond that.”

Now, we all know that the transfer portal is a big option for the ‘Cuse and every other college squad out there, since players can transfer once and still retain immediate eligibility, according to the NCAA.

ACC Men's Basketball

Something weird is going on... Florida State has started the season 0-2 after losing to UCF Friday night. In fact, the ACC lost a total of three non-conference basketball games: that one, plus Pitt lost to West Virginia and Clemson lost to South Carolina. Wake Forest did get a P5 win by taking down the Georgia Bulldogs. Everyone else pretty much played a cupcake.
__________
From ESPN's Men's College Basketball Power Index...
The Big XII have two of the top three teams in the BPI Rankings. The SEC has six teams ranked between 5th and 13th. The highest-ranked ACC team? UNC, at 16th.
In fact, in the early part of this basketball season - as of November 11, 2022 at 4:45 AM ET - the ACC only has eight teams in the top 50:

16. UNC
20. UVA
23. Duke
24. Miami
29. Notre Dame
37. Virginia Tech
43. Wake Forest
50. Florida State

I have to wonder if winless Florida State will fall out of ESPN's Top 50 after Friday night - although I wouldn't count them out for the season by any means. If there's one thing last season should've taught us, it's this: the way teams, even a conference, start the season is not necessarily a good indication of how they will end it.

Twin elephants were born at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo on Oct. 24. Provided by the office of Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon

Meet the ‘miracle’ twin elephants born at Syracuse zoo (PS; Hayes)

Twin male Asian elephants have been born at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse.

Twins only account for 1% of elephant births worldwide, according to a news release from Onondaga County.

There has never been a recorded case of surviving elephant twins born in the United States, county officials said. Of the few twin pregnancies that happen, many calves are stillborn.

Since the birth of the calves, the zoo’s animal care staff has been monitoring the twins to ensure they are both thriving.

The first calf was born around 2 a.m. Oct. 24 with no complications. He weighed 220 pounds.

To the surprise of the animal care staff, a second calf came 10 hours later. He weighed 237 pounds.

Because twins are so rare, the zoo staff was not anticipating twins when they were preparing for the mom, Mali, to give birth.

The staff could not tell the elephant was having twins after the ultrasounds, said Justin Sayles, a county spokesperson. Elephant ultrasounds cannot show the full image at once the way that ultrasounds on humans can, he said. The staff thought the mother was just having a large baby, Sayles said.

The second calf was noticeably weaker at birth than the first twin but the zoo staff was quick to treat the animal and his condition drastically improved, officials said.
