Welcome to National Square Dance Day!

National Square Dancing Day is celebrated on November 29 every year in the United States to honor the square dance form of folk dancing. This enjoyable, healthful, and simple kind of dancing with a lengthy history deserves its festival, and it has roots in traditional English, Irish, and Scottish folk dance.

Opponent Preview: What to know about No. 16 Illinois (DO; Alandt)

Syracuse is now on an early-season, two-game skid following a close loss to St. John’s and an emotionally charged, one-point loss to Bryant. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-point lead in the first half and held on despite efforts from Justin Taylor after Judah Mintz’s ejection. That was against Group of 5 opponents, and SU’s next opponent, No. 16 Illinois, provides its first real test of the season.

The Illini are rebounding from an early exit from the NCAA Tournament and are now without big man Kofi Cockburn. They’ve gotten off to a prolific start, downing nonconference opponents and falling only to then-No. 16 Virginia in a tight matchup on the road. They’re led by Terrence Shannon Jr., a Texas Tech transfer who’s averaging 20.3 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game. Illinois is the seventh-best team in the country in two-point shooting percentage and is firing 37.7% from deep. It faces off against the Orange for the first time since 1995.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Illini.

All-time series

Illinois leads 2-1.

Last time they played

Syracuse hasn’t faced off against Illinois in 27 years, when the Orange beat the Illini in the first game of the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii. A season that would end up with Syracuse falling to Kentucky in the 1996 National Championship game started with Syracuse winning its first 11 games of the season. Though Illinois came in with a .500 record, it held close to the Orange, ending the first half tied at 34-34. While neither team did particularly well from beyond the arc — SU finished at 23.1% and the Illini at 16.7% — Syracuse went 24-of-32 on free throws to seal the game in the second half.

Beat writers predict dominant win for No. 16 Illinois (DO; Staff)

Syracuse dropped to 3-3 with a home loss to Bryant last Saturday as the Bulldogs connected on a floater in the final seconds to escape the JMA Wireless Dome in a stunning win. Freshman point guard Judah Mintz was ejected in the first half, and fellow first-year Justin Taylor came off the bench, dropping a career-high 25 points in 26 minutes. Benny Williams, stricken with a sickness, played only nine minutes, and Mounir Hima, injured, didn’t play for the first time all season.

The Orange now travel west to face No. 16 Illinois in the final Atlantic Coast Conference-Big Ten Challenge. The Fighting Illini have gotten off to a 5-1 start, beating four teams ranked 268th or worse in KenPom’s rankings, and overcoming then-No. 8 UCLA by nine. Illinois lost to Virginia, 70-61, last Sunday in its only loss of the season.

Here’s what our beat writers think will happen when Syracuse travels to Illinois Tuesday night:

Anish Vasudevan (4-2)
No champagne in Champaign
Illinois 78, Syracuse 68

If Syracuse can’t beat a team that’s outside of the top 100, there’s no way it can beat one inside in the top 20. Illinois dominated in three straight easy nonconference matchups, including a key 79-70 win over UCLA. It will be hard for the Orange to stop Texas Tech transfer Terrence Shannon Jr., who’s shooting 47.1% from deep and averaging 20.3 points per game.

The Fighting Illini also have an average possession length of 15 seconds, per KenPom, which is 10th-best in the country. SU has shown its ability at times to force opponents like Richmond and Bryant into contested attempts late in shot clock, but not enough to prove the defense has improved. Justin Taylor and Chris Bell have emerged as other scoring options, but if Syracuse can’t defend early in the game, what Taylor and Bell contribute offensively won’t matter. If Joe Girard III has another cold night too, that will only dig a deeper hole for the Orange.

2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge schedule, predictions: Michigan vs. Virginia, Syracuse vs. Illinois on tap Tuesday (cbssports.com; Boone)

The 2022 edition of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge is underway after it was announced Monday that this would be the last one. This year's series includes 14 games over a three-day span, spread out with two games Monday, six games Tuesday and six more games to close it out Wednesday.

Monday's two games were a nice sampler for the main course Tuesday and Wednesday.

In Monday's opener, Sean Pedulla scored 17 points and Justyn Mutts added 16 points as Virginia Tech defeated Minnesota 67-57. Pedulla was 8 for 13 for the Hokies (7-1) who are undefeated through five home games this season. Virginia Tech outrebounded Minnesota 42-27 and had 11 on offense.

Ta'lon Cooper and Pharrel Payne each had 13 points to lead Minnesota (4-2) and Ola-Joseph added 11 as the Gophers got 27 of their 57 points from their bench.

Minnesota opens the Big Ten season Sunday at No. 5 Purdue and Virginia Tech opens the ACC season Sunday when it plays host to No. 18 North Carolina.

The ACC took a 2-0 lead in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge when Pitt had an easy 87-58 road victory vs. Northwestern as Blake Hinson shot 4 for 5 from 3-point range and scored 22 points as the Panthers posted their highest-scoring game in the last two seasons.

This is an even matchup between two teams so I'm just taking the home team and rolling with Clemson. The Tigers were 11-5 at home last season and this season they've looked pretty good on the whole even in its two losses to South Carolina and to Iowa. Expecting a knockdown, drag-out type game that sets Clemson up to play its own pace in front of its home crowd. . Pick: Clemson -1

These apartments on Legionnaire Drive in Cicero are part of the first phase of the Tocco Villaggio development. Homebuilders Joseph E. Alberici and Joseph G. Alberici are planning to build 208 apartments in the second phase of the development. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

After yearslong pause, 208-apartment complex near Micron site is moving ahead (PS; $; Moriarty)

A 208-unit apartment complex that has been on pause for eight years is now moving forward just half a mile from where Micron Technology Inc. plans to build a $100 billion computer chip factory in Clay.

Tocco Villaggio III LLC, which is owned by homebuilders Joseph E. Alberici and Joseph G. Alberici, plans to build the apartments on Pareti Place, north of Route 31 near the Cicero town line. Their goal is to get it ready for tenants within two years -- about the time construction is expected to ramp up at Micron’s chipfab site.

The $57 million apartment complex will be the second phase of the Tocco Villaggio development. The first phase was built off nearby Legionnaire Drive, just over the town line in Cicero.

The second phase will consist of eight buildings containing one- and two-bedroom apartments ranging in size from 800 to 1,500 square feet, according to plans filed with the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency. J. Alberici & Sons Inc., the Alberici family’s homebuilding business, would be the general contractor.

Amenities will include a fitness center, a pool, a community room and kitchen, and walking trails.

The Albericis have applied to the county development agency for $3 million in sales tax and mortgage recording tax abatements.

Without the tax breaks, the apartments would not be constructed in a single phase because of rising interest rates and the cost of construction materials, they said. With the tax breaks, the project could be constructed immediately in a single phase and allow for tenancy in under two years, they said.

The project site is a vacant farm field that was rezoned for residential development by the Clay Town Board eight years ago. Financial considerations have slowed the development of the parcel, the builders said in their application.

However, they said Micron’s announcement last month that it has selected White Pine Commerce Park, just half a mile west on Route 31, for a $100 billion semiconductor fabrication plant is expected to drive up demand for new housing in the area.
