Welcome to Monkey Day!
Monkey Day celebrates not only monkeys, but all simians, which include New World monkeys, Old World Monkeys, and apes. The day exists to bring awareness to the animals, and to show love and care for them. It was created by artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin, when they were art students at Michigan State University in 2000. At first the day was celebrated by students at MSU, but it eventually gained a wider following after its creators' artwork and alternative comics, which featured Monkey Day, were published online and at exhibits. Today it is celebrated all around the world.

Nichols on SU basketball podcast: What he learned as a GA and why he moved to G-League (PS; Waters)
Demetris Nichols spent just one year as a graduate assistant at Syracuse, but he learned a lot from Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim and assistants Adrian Autry, Gerry McNamara and Allen Griffin.
Nichols described what he learned from each member of the SU coaching staff in an appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast.
Nichols also revealed why he decided to leave the Syracuse basketball program after just one year to take a job as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors’ G-League franchise.
And Nichols also discussed how he overcame a severe stutter that he carried into adulthood and how he hopes to inspire others who have speech problems.

But Nichols still follows the Orange and recently took in the team’s home loss to Bryant. He offered some analysis of Syracuse’s young team.
Nichols played at Syracuse from 2003 to 2007. He finished his career with 1,344 points, which ranks 35th in school history.

Syracuse basketball gets tipoff time for New Year’s Eve game vs. Boston College (PS; Waters)
A tipoff time has been set that will allow Syracuse basketball fans a chance to cheer on the Orange one last time in 2022 and then ring in the New Year later that day.
The Syracuse men’s basketball team will host ACC rival Boston College at the JMA Wireless on Dec. 31. The start of the game is now scheduled for 2 p.m., according to an SU official. The game had previously been listed as TBA.
The SU-BC game will be televised on the ACC Network.
Syracuse is currently 7-4 on the season after winning its last four games. The Orange is 1-0 in the ACC thanks to a road win at Notre Dame on Dec. 3.
Boston College’s record stands at 5-6. The Eagles are 0-1 in the conference after losing at Duke.
Both teams have one more non-conference game before returning to ACC play. Boston College plays Stonehill on Tuesday night, while Syracuse hosts Cornell on Saturday.
Syracuse then plays Pittsbugh at the JMA Dome on Dec. 20. Boston College hosts Virginia Tech on Dec. 21 before coming to the Dome on Dec. 31.
The 2 o’clock will give fans time to get to their holiday parties or settle in front of their television screens to watch the College Football Playoff semifinals. The Syracuse-BC game should end right as the first semifinal game between Michigan and Texas Christian kicks off.
The Syracuse-BC game is one of four ACC games scheduled for New Year’s Day. Virginia at Georgia Tech will start at noon on the ACC Network. Virginia Tech and Wake Forest will tipoff at noon over on ACC Network Extra.

Syracuse men’s basketball: three takeaways from Monmouth (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Syracuse Orange returned to action tonight and with the crowd (and maybe the team) distracted by the men’s soccer National Championship game, they pulled tightened up in the second half for a win over the Monmouth Hawks.
Here are three takeaways from the win:
Slow start again
Maybe the Orange were preoccupied with the College Cup Final but once again Syracuse was slow out of the gate. Four early turnovers allowed Monmouth to get some early success. The Hawks entered the game averaging only 61 points a game but they put up in 40 in the first half of the game hitting on 6 of their first 9 three-point attempts.
As the schedule gets tougher the Orange can’t keep falling behind early in games. The team needs to figure out a way to get going early on.
Judah Mintz taking over
The freshmen point guard followed up his strong game against Georgetown with a career-high of 24 points to go along with 5 assists, 4 steals and only one turnover. He was 11-12 from the line, which means he’s made 21 of 23 free throw attempts over the last two games. If he’s able to convert those shots, he’s going to be the type of scorer the Orange need in ACC play.

Syracuse Basketball: Melo, King James cheer on as 4-star sons square off (itlh; Adler)
With Syracuse basketball legend Carmelo Anthony and NBA superstar LeBron James in attendance, the two dear friends watched as their four-star sons did battle in a nationally televised high-school encounter on the west coast.
First and foremost, writing this story makes me feel really old. I had graduated from Syracuse University prior to Melo stepping foot on the ‘Cuse campus, where he would lead the Orange to the program’s first and only national title in the 2002-03 season.
And as we’ve detailed in numerous columns lately, the ‘Cuse coaching staff recently offered a scholarship to Melo’s son, 2025 four-star shooting guard Kiyan Anthony.
The 6-foot-3 Anthony, a sophomore at the famed Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, N.Y., likely has a long way to go in his recruiting process. At the same time, I would anticipate that the Orange will be a serious contender in his recruitment.
Syracuse basketball fans are eagerly monitoring the recruiting process of Kiyan Anthony, a top-65 national prospect.
On Monday night, top-25 teams Christ the King and the Sierra Canyon School in Chatsworth, Calif., squared off on Sierra Canyon’s home court.
ESPN2 televised this contest. Sierra Canyon outlasted Christ the King, 62-51, according to various media reports, including an article from Jordan Divens, the national basketball editor at MaxPreps.
Anthony connected on a 3-pointer and finished with eight points, per Divens.
A standout for Sierra Canyon is LeBron James’ son, 2023 four-star guard Bronny James. The 6-foot-3 James, a top-50 player in the senior class who has yet to announce a college decision, put forth a couple of entertaining dunks. He had 12 points.

Syracuse NIL Store Coming Soon! - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)
Syracuse University Athletics is partnering with Campus Ink on an initiative for Orange student-athletes' Name, Image and Likeness opportunities. The Syracuse NIL Store is an additional NIL Merchandising solution for Syracuse student-athletes, with an anticipated launch date of mid-January 2023.
"The Syracuse NIL store is another vehicle for our student-athletes to participate in Name, Image and Likeness opportunities," said Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "The partnership with Campus Ink is an exciting opportunity for student-athletes to build and leverage their brand with personal merchandise in their digital lockers. NIL remains front and center in our department priorities and we will continue to provide resources for our student-athletes to capitalize on NIL opportunities."
The Syracuse NIL Store will serve as a complete NIL merchandising store for Cuse student-athletes, featuring officially licensed apparel. The store will act as a hub for student-athletes to partner with designers and make apparel that uses officially licensed Syracuse marks. Every student-athlete who signs up will possess a personalized digital locker room which will house their merchandise.

Syracuse Ranked #5 on LawnStarter’s Best Cities for Veterans (syr.edu; Marquette)
To commemorate Veterans Day this year, LawnStarter ranked 2023’s Best Cities for Veterans, where they looked at cities with high populations of veterans and determined it by ease of navigation of resources, housing affordability, employment, educational opportunities, and other metrics. The city of Syracuse was ranked #5 overall on this list of 200.

How a monthslong scramble to save Cazenovia College failed: ‘It does seem so unimaginable’ (PS; $; Moriarty)
Officials at Cazenovia College this summer came to a devastating realization: They could not refinance a $25 million debt when it came due in full Sept. 1.
Thus began a desperate scramble to save the private liberal arts college that has been an integral part of this idyllic Upstate New York village for nearly 200 years.
The college tried everything it could: Asking lenders for more time to pay up. Fundraising appeals to alumni. A bailout from the state. Partnerships with other colleges.
Nothing worked. On Wednesday morning, the college’s board of trustees met at the school and voted to close the institution at the end of the spring 2023 semester. The school will not reopen next fall.
“People are in different stages of the grieving process,” said Roxana Spano, an English professor and faculty member for 22 years. “Sometimes angry. Sometimes hoping there will be a miracle. A lot of sadness. I think it’ll take a while to accept it. It does seem so unimaginable.”
Now, the village is losing its largest employer.
