Welcome to Sacagawea Day!

Sacagawea (also spelled Sacajawea and Sakakawea) is believed to have died on today's date in 1812, and today we honor her contributions and courage. The daughter of a Shoshone chief, and part of the Lemhi band of the Shoshone tribe, she was born in May 1788 in the Lemhi Valley, near the Salmon River and the Rocky Mountains, in present-day Lemhi County, Idaho.

Pitt invades the JMA Dome. No, you won’t see Dior Johnson (what to know) (PS; $; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange returns to ACC play for the remainder of the season as it hosts the Pittsburgh Panthers on Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless.

Both teams enter the game playing well. Syracuse (8-4 overall, 1-0 ACC) has won its last five games. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is also 8-4 on the year and 1-0 in the league.

The Panthers have won seven of their last eight games. Pitt’s only loss in that stretch was a one-point setback at Vanderbilt.

Pitt’s starting lineup consists entirely of transfers. Of those five players, Jamarius Burton (Wichita State/Texas Tech) is the only one who was at Pittsburgh last season. The other four starters are Nelly Cummings (Colgate), Greg Elliott (Marquette), Blake Hinson (Mississippi State/Iowa State) and Federiko Federiko (Northern Oklahoma).

The players may be new to Pitt, but they’re old. Syracuse, on the other hand, features a very young roster.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim brought in six freshmen in the ‘22 recruiting class. Two of those freshmen, point guard Judah Mintz and small forward Chris Bell, are in SU’s starting lineup. Forwards Justin Tayor and Maliq Brown have been getting consistent minutes off the bench.

SU basketball is playing more guys this season. It’s about to dive deep into ACC play (PS; $; Ditota)

Over the past two college basketball seasons, Pittsburgh has compiled a 12-24 record against ACC opponents.

During that same span, the Panthers are 3-1 against Syracuse.

Pitt swept the series in 2021. The teams split two games last season.

The Panthers visit the JMA Wireless Dome tonight at 9.

"They’re all just really tough kids,” said SU guard Joe Girard. “They are tough guys, and it seems like they’re always in a dogfight, whether it’s playing against us or other teams.”

Girard has had his issues against the physical, pressuring presence of Pittsburgh guards. He is a combined 6-of-30 overall and 3-of-20 from the 3-point line in the last two years of combat against Pitt.

This season, Girard and the rest of the Orange men will face a Pittsburgh team that seems improved from a year ago, though time will flesh out that storyline.

Pitt (8-4) lost three of its first four games, those three defeats coming against West Virginia, Michigan and VCU. The Panthers recently lost to Vanderbilt on the road. Pitt’s best win thus far is a road victory at N.C. State.

A quick survey of Syracuse players after their win over Cornell on Saturday suggests the Orange is more concerned with how it’s performing as it dives deep into ACC play.

SU has won five straight, its best victory coming on the road at Notre Dame. But none of those five wins came against teams ranked in Kenpom.com’s Top 100. Pitt checks in at No. 72.

The winning streak has elevated the Orange psyche. Players who potentially doubted themselves after a blowout loss at Illinois and home defeats to Colgate and Bryant have become a team that once again believes.

“It’s obviously huge getting our feel back and getting some momentum after a couple tough losses. It’s big for our confidence. It’s at an all-time high,” Girard said. “But coaches keep preaching to us we gotta get better. Make sure we tune up the mistakes we’re making. Everybody we play is going to be pretty tough this year, so we have to be on our game each and every night.”

“Confident as ever,” point guard Judah Mintz said. “We can’t wait to play ACC games. We’ll be ready for Pitt Tuesday night.”

Syracuse Basketball: Starters simply fabulous in strong win over CNY foe (itlh; Adler)

Over the weekend on the Hill, Syracuse basketball head coach Jim Boeheim played 11 of his 12 scholarship players as the ‘Cuse wrapped up its non-conference slate by hosting Central New York neighbor Cornell.

For much of the 2022-23 season to date, Boeheim has utilized a deep bench, and oftentimes at least one or two reserves were pivotal pieces when the Orange would prevail over an opponent.

But against the Big Red out of the Ivy League, a group that has raced out to an impressive start in 2022-23, it was the ‘Cuse starting five that stole the show for Syracuse basketball.

All five starters put forth really nice performances. And the Orange erased a double-digit deficit in the first half and ultimately beat Cornell in relatively convincing fashion, 78-63, on an emotional Saturday for Boeheim and the entire Syracuse basketball community.

Only a few days earlier, word came across that, sadly, Orange legend Louis Orr had passed away at the age of 64. Orr, one of Boeheim’s first recruits, was one of the best – and most important – ‘Cuse players in the program’s storied history.

Syracuse basketball looked off early but managed to conquer Cornell.

The Big Red (7-3) came out hot from deep and built up an 11-point edge in the first half at 25-14. I was nervous, as I thought Cornell could absolutely take down the Orange at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Let’s not forget that the Big Red’s only two setbacks in 2022-23 prior to Saturday’s contest were on the road to Atlantic Coast Conference squads Boston College and Miami by a combined four points.

How 2 brothers from downstate NY started a gas price war in a Syracuse suburb (PS; Moriarty)

Gas prices are falling in the Syracuse area, but in one suburb, they’re plunging, thanks to an old-fashioned price war started by two brothers from downstate New York.

The average price of gas in the Syracuse area on Monday was $3.33 a gallon, according to the price-tracking service GasBuddy. That’s down from $3.72 a month ago.

But prices have fallen much further in the North Syracuse area, with many stations charging less than $3 a gallon.

The lowest price in Onondaga County on Monday was $2.59, found at the Sunshine Mini Mart on East Taft Road, a short distance east of Interstate 81. That’s a whopping 74 cents a gallon less than the area’s average, a difference that amounts to a savings of $11 on a 15-gallon fill-up.

To get that price, you have to pay cash or with a debit card. If you want to pay with a credit card, the price is $2.67, but that’s still much lower than the Syracuse’s area’s average price. Other stations in Onondaga County are charging as much as $3.79 a gallon.

Leo DeSouza and Ishaq Asif, two brothers from Westchester County, bought the station a month ago, when it operated under the Sunoco brand, and now operate it as a Citgo station.
