Welcome to Visit the Zoo Day!
Visit the Zoo Day takes place during the holidays, between Christmas and New Year's Day, at a time when children often have off from school. Family members who live out of town are often visiting as well. Given these circumstances, Visit the Zoo Day provides a great way for families to bond during the holidays.
A Zoo—short for a zoological park—is a place that contains animals and exists to entertain, educate, engage in scientific research, and focus on conservation. Early zoos, known as menageries, were private collections of animals held by the wealthy. They existed as early as 2,500 BCE, being found in Egypt and Mesopotamia. They were found soon afterward in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. Aztec Emperor Montezuma II had one of the first collections of animals in the Western Hemisphere.

Wondering what SU's basketball team does well and not so well? Stats to ponder (PS; $; Ditota)
Syracuse men’s basketball players returned to campus over the Christmas holiday. Their coach, Jim Boeheim, said the team would embark on six intense days of practice before meeting Boston College in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday at 2 p.m.
“We’re just going to have to work through it, work harder,” Boeheim said. “I think we’re close enough that we can get there.”
The Orange is coming off an 84-82 loss to Pittsburgh in the Dome. SU trailed by as many as 20 points in the game before staging a furious closing rally. Alas, a loss is a loss, and Syracuse is now 8-5 and 1-1 in the ACC.
Trouble continues to lurk for SU. With conference play fully underway, there are several areas that need the Orange men’s attention.
Here are some of them:
*Syracuse needs to improve its 3-point shooting defense.
The Orange is not a good 3-point shooting team by any statistical measure. SU ranks 13th of 15 ACC teams in 3-point shooting (21.4% in two league games). It is shooting 32.3% from that distance overall, which ranks 224th nationally (Kenpom.com).
Because it’s not particularly adept at it, Syracuse does not take many 3s. SU ranks 333rd nationally in the percentage of shots it takes from the 3-point line.
That puts a lot of pressure on Syracuse’s perimeter defense.
Because of SU’s 2-3 zone, teams are taking an inordinate number of 3-point shots. Opposing teams are taking nearly half (48.9%) of their shots from the 3-point line against SU. That ranks 359th nationally. Only four teams allow a higher percentage of 3-point shots than Syracuse.
Limiting the amount of 3-point shots and the quality of those shots would help the Orange.

Syracuse Basketball: 5-star PG with Orange in top 6 sets commitment date (itlh; Adler)
Elliot Cadeau, a five-star prospect in the 2024 class who has Syracuse basketball in his top six, is reportedly set to announce his college decision later this week.
Per 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London, the 6-foot-1 Cadeau plans to announce his commitment decision on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 7 pm EST.
Cadeau is rated the country’s No. 1 point guard in his cycle and a top-10 national prospect, according to multiple recruiting services.
At the end of October, Cadeau unveiled a top six of the ‘Cuse, North Carolina, Louisville, Texas Tech, Texas and 2022 national champion Kansas.
The Orange coaching staff offered a scholarship to him in November of 2021, and the ‘Cuse has been prioritizing Cadeau for a significant period of time, perhaps as long or longer than any of his other finalists, save for Texas Tech.
Dating back to late September, Cadeau has taken official visits to UNC, Texas Tech and Louisville.
He told On3 national analyst Joe Tipton in a recent interview that he was eyeing a possible official visit to the Hill, but with his commitment announcement set for later this week, I don’t envision an official visit to Syracuse basketball happening, at least at this time.
Given that, I don’t expect the Orange to hear its name called when Cadeau makes his decision this Wednesday. Analyst buzz and recent reports from recruiting insiders suggest that North Carolina and Texas Tech may be the “favorites” in Cadeau’s recruitment.

Syracuse Basketball: Adam Weitsman offers 7-figure NIL deal to 5-star PG (itlh; Adler)
Businessman and top SU booster Adam Weitsman has offered a three-year, seven-figure name, image and likeness deal to 2024 five-star point guard Elliot Cadeau, who has a top six that includes Syracuse basketball.
Weitsman shared this news with me on Monday by telephone. He says he has been speaking with the mother of the 6-foot-1 Cadeau about this NIL offer. Weitsman declined to provide further financial details on this NIL deal, although he said that this offer would have Cadeau conduct non-profit, civic and philanthropic efforts in the 315 and 607 area codes.
Weitsman, a highly successful businessman, says that for Cadeau or any other college or high-school player who eventually signs a NIL agreement with Weitsman, the focus will be on charitable endeavors like partnering with local hospitals, rather than marketing Weitsman’s businesses.
As he told me in a separate story at the beginning of November, Adam Weitsman does not discuss Syracuse basketball or any other collegiate program with Cadeau or his family members. NIL deals can’t be used as a form of inducement (“pay-for-play”) for a high-school player to commit to a specific college or university, whether that’s Syracuse University or any other school.
Earlier on Monday, 247Sports national analyst Dushawn London reported that Cadeau is planning to announce his commitment decision on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 7 pm EST.
Cadeau is a standout for the powerhouse Link Academy in Branson, Mo., a squad that is currently ranked No. 1 across the country, per multiple national media outlets. Cadeau does have the option to reclassify to the 2023 cycle, according to media reports.

It’s Time for SU Hoops to Make Necessary Lineup Changes – Orange Fizz – Daily Syracuse Recruiting News & Team Coverage (orangefizz.net; Bainbridge)
Almost a week has passed since Syracuse men’s basketball was in action. For better or worse, the Orange (8-5, 1-1 ACC) get time to rest before squaring up with Boston College on New Year’s Eve. Whether you believe time off will defrost SU or cost it momentum, there’s no question ‘Cuse has some things to iron out following its defeat last Wednesday against Pitt. That’s putting things lightly – if Syracuse doesn’t make some changes and figure some things out, it’ll spend the 20th anniversary of its National Championship limping to its worst finish in generations.
Right now, Syracuse is rated 88th by KenPom (out of 363 Division I teams), 10th in the ACC, and below-average in both offense and defense. Most worryingly, the Orange have sputtered against the nation’s 223rd-hardest schedule and now sport a resumé that includes losses to a surprisingly mediocre Colgate team and a Bryant outfit that has since lost to Brown and Liberty. If that slate of problems doesn’t convince you that a roll of the dice is necessary, nothing will.
Even as Judah Mintz’s last-second shot clanged off the backboard in SU’s 84-82 loss to Pittsburgh last week, there were immediate takeaways concerning SU’s lineup. The Fizz’s postgame coverage took an initial look at the topic, but it’s worth taking a more in-depth look at what may save the Orange, at least in the short-term: the elevation of freshmen Quadir Copeland and Maliq Brown to an increased and starting role, respectively.
Whether it was a preemptive effort to play youth in a blowout or a calculated gamble, Jim Boeheim gave plenty of leash to young players against the Panthers. Copeland and Brown made the most of their opportunities, set career highs in minutes, and nearly helped SU pull off a 20-point comeback. It’s hard to diagnose that as a mere coincidence.
Early in the season, Boeheim said he was “not sure” what the team would do and that “we’ll see” when asked about potential lineup changes. To this point, he’s trotted out the same five in all 13 of Syracuse’s games. Much like his resistance to playing then-freshman Kadary Richmond over Joe Girard two years ago, Boeheim appears reticent toward shaking up his starting lineup no matter how harshly he criticizes his players, and famously hates backseat suggestions of the sort.
With that in mind, it remains surprising that freshman Chris Bell continues to start at small forward. Boeheim has spent the year (rightly) griping about Bell’s lack of rebounding; he did so after Lehigh, Colgate, Richmond, St. John’s, and again after Pitt. Still, Bell simply refuses to get involved. The California native is one of just three players (out of 214) in the ACC with fewer than 2.0 rebounds per game and 200-plus minutes played so far. Only four other players in the conference have played 13 or more games and averaged fewer rebounds per game than Bell does (1.4). Bell’s shooting acumen hasn’t nearly been enough to offset his ghostly presence at the boards, and he has routinely been yanked out of games for long stretches as a result.

New AP men’s basketball Top 25 drops: there’s some ACC movement in the poll (PS; Ditota)
The AP poll stops for no holidays.
The Boxing Day Top 25 is out, with few changes from a week ago. Purdue is still No. 1. Connecticut still lurks on most ballots (mine excluded). A couple teams dropped out (sorry, Arizona State) and a few made their way back onto the ballot.

Syracuse men’s basketball: Jerami Grant’s (‘14) career-year has put the NBA on notice (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
It’s always nice to see a former member of the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team thriving better than ever in the NBA. Look no further than Jerami Grant ‘14.
In the past decade, Grant’s career has been interesting, to say the least. Drafted with the 39th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, he’s evolved from a flashy two-way wing in Philly to a bona fide starter with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, and Detroit Pistons.
Since joining the Portland Trail Blazers this year, Grant took the leap from quality contributor to fringe All-Star.
That’s absurd in the NBA world. The last notable player to make his first All-Star Game in his age-28 season would be Kyle Lowry, who turned into a six-time All-Star, borderline All-NBA guard, and 2019 NBA champion following a similar career arc to Grant. Other than that, you typically don’t see late-career blooms like this one.
So what’s changed this season for Grant? Let’s take a look at the stat sheet.
Basketball-Reference
The biggest statistical standout is Grant’s 44% three-point shooting this season. Grant’s improvement from downtown is easily the skill he’s progressed in the most during his tenure in the league. Between 2015 and 2018, Grant was shooting just 30% from three on under two attempts per game. Since that point, he’s improved both his volume (4.6 attempts per game since 2018) and his efficiency (38% in his last five years). Statistically, Grant has nearly doubled his three-point attempts in his last three seasons while still shooting above the league average of around 36%.

Another blizzard has buried parts of western and Central New York over the Christmas holiday.
But just how much snow fell? And who saw the most snow?
The Buffalo Niagara International Airport — which closed Friday due to “hazardous weather conditions” and will remain closed through 11 a.m. Wednesday — has had more snow fall in the last three days than anywhere else in the state, according to the National Weather Service.
Meteorologists and weather observers recorded more than 49 inches of snow in 72 hours at the Buffalo airport.
Lakeview in Erie County saw 42 inches in the same time frame; and Watertown and Henderson Harbor in Jefferson County each saw 41 inches of snow fall since Friday morning.
Below is a list of the snowfall totals from over the Christmas weekend, which the National Weather Service shared on Monday:

Meteorologists and weather observers recorded more than 49 inches of snow in 72 hours at the Buffalo airport.
Lakeview in Erie County saw 42 inches in the same time frame; and Watertown and Henderson Harbor in Jefferson County each saw 41 inches of snow fall since Friday morning.
