Welcome to Bacon Day!

According to the Bacon Day website, the day was created by Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard. They came up with the day as a way to celebrate bacon and The Simpsons. In The Simpsons episode "I Love Lisa," Homer asks, "Is it Bacon Day?" This is how the creators of the day tied the celebration of two things they love together.

So what's the story of bacon? Bacon is a popular treat cut from the meat of a pig. In the United States, bacon refers to meat from the belly of the pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon. To make bacon, the pork is cured using salt, and is then dried, boiled, or smoked. The smoking of bacon is often done with hickory, mesquite, or maple wood, and flavors such as brown sugar or maple may be added. More often than not, bacon is pan fried, and it is popular as a breakfast food, in sandwiches like the BLT or club sandwich, as a complement to salads, and in wrapping other foods. "Bacon mania" has swept the United States and Canada since the late 1990's, where there has been a great increase in the amount of bacon being eaten, and in the amount of new bacon recipes. The high sodium and nitrate content of bacon that lower its health benefits has not seemed to much slow down the bacon craze.

SU rings in New Year vs. BC, a team that has trouble scoring (what to know) (PS; $; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange is coming out of the Christmas break after a disappointing loss to Pittsburgh.

The Boston College Eagles are coming off their best win of the season.

Both teams will try to ring in the New Year with a conference win when the two former Big East rivals meet at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Syracuse (8-5 overall, 1-1 ACC) hasn’t played since falling to Pittsburgh 84-82 at the Dome back on Dec. 20. The Orange trailed by 20 points with just over 10 minutes remaining in that game, but a stunning rally came up just short. The loss snapped Syracuse’s five-game win streak.

Boston College (7-6, 1-1) had stumbled through its early schedule, losing to the likes of Maine, Tarleton State and New Hampshire.

But in their last outing, the Eagles shocked No. 21 Virginia Tech, 70-65 in overtime, at the Conte Forum on Dec. 21. Boston College guard Makai Ashton-Langford, who had missed two games due to injury, led the Eagles’ upset with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Boston College is winless on the road this season at 0-2. The Eagles’ two road losses were at Nebraska and Duke and came by an average of 18.5 points. However, Syracuse has already lost three times at home this season ― to Colgate, Bryant and Pittsburgh.

The SU-BC game is scheduled to tip off at 2 p.m. on the ACC Network.

Here are five key things to know ahead of the game:

Syracuse Orange guard Judah Mintz (3) against Pittsburgh at the JMA Wireless Dome, Syracuse, N.Y. Tuesday December 20, 2022. Scott Schild | sschild@syracuse.com Scott Schild

How do Mintz’s stats compare with other freshman point guards? (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

Comparing current Syracuse players to past Orange greats can be a fun exercise, but sometimes those comparisons fall short. In those instances, it’s fun to look at the raw numbers.

I did a little of both in order to answer the first question in this week’s Mailbox.

We also take an interesting look at Syracuse’s continued presence in the Big East’s record book over eight years after leaving that conference for the ACC, plus look at a seemingly unbreakable record and a bit of recruiting insight.

As always, if you have any college basketball-related questions, please email to mwaters@syracuse.com.

Q: Has there ever been a freshman point guard that numbers, especially assists to turnovers, that were similar to Judah Mintz?

Mgovendo on Twitter

Mike:
Over the last 25 years, Syracuse has had several freshmen earn the starting point guard job. The list includes Joe Girard, Tyler Ennis, Kaleb Joseph, Jonny Flynn, Gerry McNamara and Jason Hart.

It’s hard to say that any of them compare exactly with Judah Mintz in terms of physical traits and how they play the game. The best comparison would probably be Flynn, who was a dynamic athlete capable of penetrating into the lane.

Jonny Flynn

However, when it comes to comparing statistics, several bear striking similarities.

Mintz is leading the Orange with 15.6 points per game. He is also averaging 4.0 assists and 1.9 turnovers, which is on target for a desirable 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

As a freshman in 2009, Flynn scored 15.7 points per game. His assist and turnover numbers were a little higher than Mintz’s, but at 5.2 assists and 2.7 turnovers, Flynn was still in range of the 2-to-1 ratio.

Flynn is the only one of the previously mentioned point guards who scored more points per game than Mintz is currently averaging.

McNamara was at 13.3 points per game. He averaged 4.4 assists and 2.4 turnovers. The real strength of McNamara’s game was his outside shooting. He made 35.7% of his 3-point attempts as a freshman, while Mintz is struggling at 18.5%.

Ennis scored 12.9 points per game but had exceptional assist-to-turnover numbers with 5.5 assists and only 1.7 turnovers per game. Ennis played a much more controlled game than Mintz. Ennis couldn’t be sped up, while teams can’t stop Mintz from flashing to the basket.

Syracuse Basketball: Analyst praises play of Judah Mintz so far this season (itlh; Adler)

Entering the 2022-23 campaign, freshman point guard Judah Mintz was the highest-ranked commit in a promising six-member 2022 class for Syracuse basketball.

Though he’s experienced some understandable growing pains to date in the 2022-23 term, given his fast-paced style of play and the fact that his collegiate career is only 13 games old, the 6-foot-3 Mintz has done a lot of wonderful things on the court at this juncture in the present stanza.

As we’ve previously noted, he’s received some early buzz for the 2023 NBA Draft, but Mintz has a long way to go before he’s deemed a likely one-and-done player.

That being said, as the Orange (8-5, 1-1 in the ACC) prepares to host fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Boston College (7-6, 1-1) on New Year’s Eve, Judah Mintz is garnering high praise from national experts. And deservingly so.

Syracuse basketball point guard Judah Mintz is shining in his freshman stint.

Per ESPN statistics, through 13 contests, Mintz is averaging 30.8 minutes, 15.6 points, 4.0 assists, 2.1 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.9 turnovers per affair.

He is connecting on 42.8 percent from the field, 18.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 76.7 percent from the free-throw line. Mintz’s shooting percentages from the field as a whole, and from deep, need to improve.

But his keen sense to facilitate for his teammates, weave through defenders to score at the rim, and connect on mid-range jumpers are really impressive. Mintz is an excellent defender, has a ton of energy, and is tough as nails.

When I checked the ACC’s Web site on December 28, Mintz at that time was No. 11 within the league in scoring, No. 11 in assists, No. 1 in steals and No. 7 in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Syracuse men’s basketball misses out on Top-10 recruit Elliot Cadeau (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

The Syracuse Orange were unable to land a major commitment from the Class of 2024. Link Academy’s Elliot Cadeau, the consensus No. 2 PG in that class, will instead join an ACC rival, the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Cadeau made the announcement during halftime of his latest game and also posted it on his social media.

100% committed. pic.twitter.com/7Bq7zvjviQ
— Elliot Cadeau (@ElliotCadeau) December 29, 2022
Cadeau was previously offered a three-year NIL deal by Adam Weitsman reportedly worth seven figures. He is able to reclassify to the Class of 2023 but has not yet chosen to do so.

In addition to Syracuse and UNC, Texas, Texas Tech, Louisville, and Kansas were final suitors for the 6’2” guard.

Right now, the Orange do not have a single commitment for either the Class of 2023 or 2024. After their preseason game against Southern New Hampshire, Head Coach Jim Boeheim said that the program is prepared to not bring in any new recruits for next season. Both On3 and 247 Sports show that all the rated ‘23 players SU offered scholarships to have committed elsewhere.

Openings, closings and changes: What happened to Central NY restaurants in 2022 (list) (PS; Cazentre)

Restaurants opened. Restaurants closed. And, at some locations, there were both closings and openings.

It was another busy year on the local dining scene in Central New York. Although noteworthy closings often generate the biggest headlines, there were also plenty of new places offering new concepts to hungry Central New Yorkers.

Lingering Covid issues, combined with inflation and supply chain problems, certainly conspired to make it difficult to run any business. But that didn’t stop veteran restaurant operators and new entrepreneurs alike from offering new tastes and places to check out.

Below is a look at some of the major changes in 2022. This list mostly focuses on locally owned places, with a few major chains thrown in. (Note: This is by no means a complete list, but some of the highlights).

Closings

Luna Loca, downtown Syracuse.

This “California Tex Mex” restaurant opened to much acclaim in the former home of The Mission restaurant near Columbus Circle in 2021. It closed in January after just six months. Co-owner Ryan Benz declined to provide details other than to text: “Industry challenges right now are well documented.”

Dunn’s Bakery, Canastota.

This shop, known for its half-moon cookies and other goodies, had been in business for 80 years. In January, the owner posted on Facebook that he was ill and could no longer run the business.

Popeyes, Destiny USA, Syracuse.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, part of a national chain, had opened to long lines and fanfare at Destiny in 2012. When it closed in January, company officials did not provide a reason.

Scratch Bakehouse, Syracuse.

Just chiming in to wish everyone here a safe and peaceful Bacon Day.
