Welcome to Pizza Pie Day!

Pizza Pie Day, also commonly known as National Pizza Day and National Pizza Pie Day, is a day for eating pizza. Pie-shaped flatbreads with toppings were first eaten in Naples in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At the time, this coastal city was not part of Italy, but its own kingdom. The working poor, or lazzaroni, lived outside or in small homes, and needed cheap food. Pizza consisted of flatbread with toppings such as tomatoes, garlic, cheese, anchovies, and oil, and it was sold by street vendors and informal restaurants, and eaten for any meal.

Pizza did not gain a foothold in Italy at the time, and it was in the United States, where Neapolitans immigrated to, that pizza gained in popularity. The first pizzeria in the United States was Lombardi's, which was started in New York City in 1905. Lombardi's is still in business, and although it is in a new location, the original oven is still in use. Neapolitans brought pizza to many other cities, including Trenton, New Haven, St. Louis, Chicago, and Boston. Pizza became popular all over the country, especially following World War II. Many styles of crusts and different toppings became popular in different regions. Eventually, pizza made its way back to Italy, as well as to other parts of the world.

Boeheim on clarifications, apology and talk with his boss: ‘I’m not always perfect’ (PS; $; Waters)

In the wake of comments he made to ESPN that certain ACC schools had bought teams through the use of the transfer portal and NIL money, Jim Boeheim had to apologize to coaching colleagues Jeff Capel of Pittsburgh and Steve Forbes of Wake Forest.

The interview with ESPN, conducted after Syracuse’s win at Boston College last Saturday, resulted in another conversation for Boeheim.

This one not with a fellow coach, but with his boss.

In the ESPN story, Boeheim was asked about his thoughts on retirement, a question that pops up frequently and always annoys the 78-year-old coach.

“I know it’s my choice,” Boeheim was quoted as saying. “I can do whatever I want.’’

Before Boeheim coached his team to a 76-67 win Wednesday night at Florida State, Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack confirmed he had “a couple conversations’' with Boeheim earlier in the week about his “I can do whatever I want’' comment.

Wildhack would not go into specifics of the discussion.

“That’s going to stay between Jim and me,’’ Wildhack said.

Boeheim said the talk with Wildhack lasted “for 10 minutes.’’

Wildhack did say that Boeheim clarified his comments on his own accord.

“Jim did it on his own,’’ Wildhack said. “He’s clarified that since. I think the only job in this country is Supreme Court Justice, outside of that, we are responsible and we work at the pleasure of the entity that employs us whether it’s a university, whether it’s a Fortune 500 company, whether it’s an independently owned business.’’

To many, it appeared Boeheim was saying he had the ultimate say in whether and/or when he left coaching.

Mintz, Boeheim work to find common ground to showcase freshman's unique talent (PS; $; Ditota)

Judah Mintz took over a portion of Wednesday night’s second half here.

The Syracuse point guard rose from a 2 minute, 16-second period on the bench and just like he did last weekend against Boston College, he quickly launched his brash assault on the basket.

He stole the ball and finished in transition. He finished a lefty drive in the lane, drew a foul and made the free throw. He caught a Joe Girard transition pass and converted that shot. He drove again in transition and finished.

At that point, Syracuse led 64-56 in a game it once trailed by eight. The Orange defeated FSU 76-67.

“Judah struggled early. He missed a couple dunks, missed a layup,” SU coach Jim Boeheim said. “I told him, ‘You just gotta hang in there. Just keep going.’ And then he must have gone on a run and scored 10-12 points in a row, same thing he did at Boston College.”

This freshman season has been an interesting transition for Mintz, the uniquely talented, fierce first-year point guard who has at times clashed with his head coach over what, exactly, he should be doing on the basketball court.

In SU’s last two games, Boeheim has sat him down for second half stretches, then watched him return and dominate his opponents. Against Florida State, Mintz scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

“It’s hard for him to listen sometimes,” Boeheim said. “When he finally does and thinks about what we’re saying to him and he goes out there and tries to do that, it usually works for him.”

Chopped: SU basketball defeats Florida State (Axe recap) (PS; $; Axe)

Syracuse basketball hit the reset button on Florida State at halftime, using a second-half surge to earn a 76-67 win on Wednesday night in Tallahassee.

The Orange overturned a six-point halftime deficit by attacking the rim with fierce determination, flipping a rebounding gap and getting the rest of the party on the dance floor better late than never.

Syracuse put an ACC Tournament tie-breaker with FSU in its back pocket with the victory.

Seeing that the Orange will have to win the ACC Tournament to qualify for March Madness, every little bit helps. Winning four games in Greensboro is easier than five, after all.

Unless there was another hallway summit with a national sports reporter I’m not aware of, no clarifications or apologies will be necessary from Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim who was gracious, chatty and insightful in his postgame press conference.

Syracuse basketball: Jim Boeheim breaks down win at FSU, addresses NIL and job status comments (247sports.com; Weinstein)

After a recent three-game losing streak, Syracuse needed to kick things into high gear to have any hope of making the NCAA Tournament. That has happened for coach Jim Boeheim and company, who now have two straight road wins after beating Florida State 76-67 Wednesday.

While the Seminoles have been far from impressive this season, a road win is a road win. And it came in the wake of controversial comments made by Boeheim about his ACC foes' use of NIL to allegedly cheat in recruiting.

The Orange will now get a couple of good opportunities at home against NC State and Duke. A push for an at-large bid might not be out of the picture if 'Cuse can win both of those games.

After the win, Boeheim spoke with reporters about Syracuse's defense, his freshmen and his conversations with opposing coaches who did not like his comments about NIL. Below is a transcript of his most salient comments, lightly edited for clarity and brevity.

Opening statement:
"I think we started out the game and we had a lot of good looks and didn't make anything. Got them back in it, and they hurt us with the lob pass. It took us awhile to adjust to that. We thought Chris (Bell) would get some wide-open shots over there, and he usually makes a bunch of those, but tonight he struggled. But our defense got better as the game went along. We got to (Darin) Green better. We know they are not a great shooting team, but ... again, we did a better job of finding him. Fortunately he didn't have a great night, but we were up on him pretty good. I thought Benny (Williams) did a good job defensively. I thought that Jesse (Edwards) got 10 layups in the first half, and at Boston College he made eight or nine of them. But he just couldn't get it to go in. That just knocks your momentum back, when he is missing those layups. I thought Judah (Mintz) struggled early, missed a couple of dunks, missed a layup, but I told him you have just gotta hang in there. Just keep going. Then he must have gone around and scored 10, 12 points in a row — same thing he did at Boston College. He is as good as anybody at getting to the basket.

Syracuse Basketball: Joe Girard III is lights out in another Orange road win (itlh; Adler)

Granted, its opponent is having a poor 2022-23 season, but Syracuse basketball still found itself down by six points to Florida State at halftime on Wednesday night in the Sunshine State.

Then, in the second half, the Orange outscored the Seminoles, 47-32, to come away with a 76-67 victory over FSU inside the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center in Tallahassee, Fla. To me, the ‘Cuse produced perhaps its best half of basketball in the entire 2022-23 stanza in the final 20 minutes versus Florida State.

For a team that has been criticized over and over again about not being able to close out tight contests of late, Syracuse basketball sure put the clamps down against FSU after the break. Not only did the Orange (15-10, 8-6 in the ACC) outscore the Seminoles by 15 points, but the ‘Cuse also proved strong on the glass in the second half, ultimately winning the battle on the boards, 39-34.

Senior shooting guard Joe Girard III, often trashed by some Orange fans on social media, was simply phenomenal in the Orange’s victory on Wednesday evening over FSU (8-17, 6-8). As a collective unit, Syracuse basketball connected on just 29 percent from beyond the arc.

Girard, though, went 5-of-8 from deep, 9-of-16 from the field as a whole and finished with a game-high 26 points along with seven rebounds. He hit a dagger 3-pointer to seal the deal for the ‘Cuse in the closing minute of this Atlantic Coast Conference clash.

Syracuse basketball played at a high level in the second half of a road triumph at Florida State.

In moving to 10-6 in its all-time series with Florida State, the Orange defense held the Seminoles to just 38.8 percent shooting from the field and 25.7 percent from 3-point land. The ‘Cuse had a fairly lackluster first half and trailed 35-29 at the intermission. But then Syracuse basketball put on the jets in the second half.

After the break, freshman point guard Judah Mintz really showcased his ability to get into the lane and score in the paint. He tallied 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, while dishing out a half-dozen assists.

In the game’s first 20 minutes, senior center Jesse Edwards struggled on offense. However, he was excellent in the second half. He finished with 18 points, 12 boards (including five on the offensive end) and three blocks. Edwards also went an impressive 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Freshman forward Chris Bell didn’t shoot well from the field, but he did manage to generate 10 points and six rebounds, with the latter statistic being the important one here.

By conquering Florida State, Syracuse basketball has won two ACC road encounters in a row, and for all of 2022-23, the Orange is 5-4 overall in true road affairs. Granted, the team’s victories on the road haven’t been against high-quality foes, but being above the .500 mark on the road is still a positive for this young ‘Cuse roster.

Looking ahead, Syracuse basketball doesn’t have a game this coming weekend, but its next four contests are versus some of the premier squads in the ACC. On February 14, the Orange will host No. 22 N.C. State.

Following that conference collision, the ‘Cuse will play Duke at the JMA Wireless Dome on February 18 then travel to Clemson (February 22) and Pittsburgh (February 25).

https://syracuse./news/how-are-syracuse-players-doing-in-the-nba-?yptr=yahoo?src=rss (r1vals.com; Dagostino)

Well, no former Syracuse players in the NBA are on the verge of breaking the all-time scoring record like LeBron James just did. But, nonetheless, let's check in and see how they've fared lately as the league approaches the unofficial halfway point of the season...

Buddy Boeheim
.
Boeheim still has not appeared in an NBA game for the Detroit Pistons since logging one minute on October 21. However, he's up to 10.7 points in 24.1 minutes per game for Detroit's G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise. He is also connecting on 44 percent of his 6.6 3-point attempts per contest. Meanwhile, Detroit has the second worst record in the league. Despite being in the middle of a rebuild, the Pistons have not been able to find any court time for Boeheim.

Oshae Brissett
.
With each passing update, the Indiana Pacers continue to slide further and further down in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Their Cinderella story to start the season has faded and they now find themselves five games under .500 and in 11th place in the standings, just outside the play-in tournament. Brissett has not enjoyed the same playing time or success on the court as he did last season, when he played in 67 games (starting in 25) and scored in double figures 24 times. This season, Brissett has averaged 16.2 minutes per game and his scoring average is down from 9.1 points last season to just 5.6 points this season. He has scored in double figures just once in his last 19 games, going scoreless in twice as many games in that same stretch.

Jerami Grant
.
Portland now sits in a tie for 11th place in the Western Conference standings. However, it remains the "wild wild West" in that the difference between 11th and fourth place is just three and a half games. So, if Grant and the Trail Blazers can go on a run, their position in the standings could change dramatically. For his part, despite going through a bit of a lull so far in February (averaging just 13.5 points in four games this month), Grant is still about as steady as they come. For the third straight season, Grant has averaged right around 20 points and four rebounds a game. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, there will be no shortage of suitors in the offseason trying to obtain his services.

‎Locked On Syracuse - Daily Podcast On Syracuse Orange Football & Basketball: Joe Girard Leads Syracuse To Victory Against Florida State on Apple Podcasts (apple.com; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Owen Valentine recaps Syracuse Basketball's second straight road ACC win against Florida State in Tallahassee. Who stood out for Syracuse? What are some of the big takeaways? What does Twitter say about the game? It's your Locked On Syracuse Thursday.

ACC Roundup - Syracuse, Georgia Tech And BC Win (DBR; King)

First a correction: we misread the schedule and looked at the wrong days and didn’t see Wednesday’s schedule. As far as those games go, the misery continues for Florida State, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech as those teams fell to Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Boston College respectively.

Joe Girard, who has been an erratic offensive presence for Syracuse after smashing the New York high school scoring record, racked up 26 here. Big man Jesse Edwards had 18 points, 12 boards and three blocks. Judah Mintz, who is certainly a contender for ACC Rookie Of The Year, had 16 and almost all of them in the final 13 minutes.

Florida State did lead at the half and pushed Syracuse in the second. It was a one-point game at 55-54 with 9:56 to go and then Syracuse started to pull away. A 16-2 run tends to do that.

After the game, Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said this: “There were so many simple mistakes we made, turning the ball over here, turning the ball over there, not cutting hard enough. Enough that you gave a team with a couple of outstanding guys on their team (opportunities).”

Hamilton is always stoic on the sideline, but you know this must be killing him.

There’s really no particular reason why Georgia Tech should have beaten a veteran team like Miami, but Notre Dame’s season has been more or less a disaster.

Well, more than less.

Georgia Tech limited Notre Dame to 1-11 down the stretch and even though they only hit 2-8 during that time, it was enough.

Mike Brey, who is going to retire after the season, skipped the post-game presser, sending assistant Hamlet Tibbs instead.

What could he really say? It was an awful performance by the Irish.

In the last game of the night, Boston College got Virginia Tech, 82-76.

Now 12-13, as we’ve said before, you can’t underestimate this team because they will work harder than just about anyone else. Match it or you’re probably going to lose. And that’s what happened to Virginia Tech Wednesday night.

BC severely limited Virginia Tech’s entire perimeter, holding Michael Collins to just one shot. Sean Pedulla was held to 4-13 and Hunter Cattoor just 2-10. The three of them combined to score just 20.

One of the best ACC stories of the year is the relatively late emergence of Quinten Post. He had an injury early and since his return, Post has been one of the best big men in the ACC. He had 24 points and 10 boards against Virginia Tech.

Pitt Wins 10th ACC Game for First Time Since Inaugural ACC Season in 2013-14 (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Bechtold)

Tuesday night’s win against Louisville was not Pitt’s toughest test of the season, but crossing off a box not previously checked in nine years proved the current core was up for the task.

The Panthers (17-7, 10-3 ACC) defeated the Cardinals (3-21, 1-12 ACC) 91-57 and completed the season sweep following a 75-54 win at the KFC Yum! Center on Jan. 18. Pitt has won 10 ACC games for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign, the Panthers’ first season in the conference.

Nike Sibande paced the Panthers, scoring a team-high 15 points, as four players reached double figures. Greg Elliott (14), Blake Hinson (11), Nelly Cummings (11), and Guillermo Diaz Graham (11) led the way as Pitt shot 54.9% from the floor and connected on 17-of-31 (54.8%) three-point attempts.

Home cooking has been a major reason why. Jeff Capel’s team is 11-3 at home and 5-2 in conference play. Wins against Virginia, North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Miami propelled the Panthers to the top of the ACC standings. The home victories coupled with road wins at NC State, Syracuse, and sweeping North Carolina have provided the program its best opportunity to surpass the first-year win total.

Ribeye steak with chimichurri over a root vegetable mash

Cozy upscale dining took us by surprise at Oak & Vine (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Cuadrado)

We didn’t know what to expect heading into Oak & Vine, but on the way home, with a full belly, all we could feel was satisfied.

I frequent Auburn in the warmer months for ice cream and walks around Owasco Lake, but this quaint city west of Syracuse doesn’t usually come to mind when I want a cozy winter date night. We were pleasantly surprised by the creativity and thought going into Oak & Vine’s upscale menu.

When you walk in, the dining room is to the right, and the rest of the attached Springside Inn is to the left. We were delighted by the dining room: a farmhouse style with wood accents, solid wood furniture, cozy décor and a fireplace. The lighting was bright enough for great food photos but not overly bright for a date night setting. The room never got too hot or cold. This started us off with a warm and cozy feeling.

The menu did not have a cocktail menu, which was a bit disappointing, but perhaps the name “Oak & Vine” called for us to have a glass of wine. We later found out they did have a craft cocktail menu — it was attached to the dessert menu which was provided at the end of our meal. We thought that was an odd choice.

We decided on a pinot noir and a merlot. Our large wine glasses were perfect for swirling and smelling our wine before taking a sip. After playing sommelier, we ordered two appetizers, two entrees and a dessert to share.
