Welcome to the Ides of March!

The Roman calendar, which dates back to 753 BCE, had three fixed points throughout the month: Nones, Ides, and Kalends. Ides took place around the midpoint of each month, occurring on the 13th or 15th. In March it took place on the 15th.

The Ides of March is most remembered as being the anniversary of the day that Julius Caesar was assassinated, in 44 BCE. The day did, however, have some significance before this infamous event. It had long been a day of religious observances. The Ides of each month was sacred to Jupiter, Rome's supreme deity. Flamen Dialis, Jupiter's high priest, would traditionally lead an "Ides sheep" along the streets of Rome before it was sacrificed. The first part of March consisted of new year's celebrations, as March was the first month of the Roman calendar. The Feast of Anna Perenna, a goddess of the year, was a festival held on the Ides that closed down the new year's celebrations. Celebrants gathered outside of Rome, along the banks of the Tiber River, for food, drink, music, and sacrifices to Anna Perenna for a prosperous new year. The Ides of March was also used by Romans as a deadline for settling debts.

SU News

(youtube.com; podcast; Waters, Ditota & Axe)

Mike Waters is joined by his Syracuse.com colleagues Donna Ditota and Brent Axe for a discussion on Jim Boeheim’s retirement, how it went down and the transition to new head coach Adrian Autry.

JJ Starling transferring to Syracuse (theathletic; $; Marks and Staff)

Guard JJ Starling will transfer to Syracuse from Notre Dame, he announced in an Instagram post, marking the first major addition for new coach Adrian Autry. Here’s what you need to know:
  • Autry took over the program last week following the retirement of legendary coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim had coached the Orange since 1976.
  • Starling, a 2022 McDonalds All-American, grew up just a few miles from Syracuse in Baldwinsville, N.Y.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

How significant is Starling’s commitment?

Usually, the “first recruit” of any new era ends up just being the answer to a trivia question 10 or 15 years from now, but in this case, it’s actually much more significant. Starling was a legitimate five-star prospect coming out of high school and had the potential to be Notre Dame’s second consecutive one-and-done guard, following current San Antonio Spurs rookie Blake Wesley.

That … didn’t happen. But Starling’s pedigree is still intact, and by the end of this cycle, despite his quick commitment, we’ll likely be talking about him as one of the most impactful transfers of the offseason. This is the sort of move that Autry really needed, to send a message nationally that Syracuse doesn’t intend on slipping from its perch. The Orange haven’t had their typical success the last two seasons, but Starling is the kind of backcourt stud who can quickly reverse a team’s fortunes. — Marks

What he brings to Syracuse

Starling missed the last four games of Notre Dame’s season due to knee soreness, but when healthy, he showed the scoring chops that made him so highly sought after as a recruit. Per KenPom, Starling took just over 25 percent of the Fighting Irish’s shots while on the court — a relatively high rate for a true freshman — and while he likely won’t be asked to replicate that on a more-balanced Syracuse squad, he’s more than capable of pulling his own weight offensively.

The questions here will be about fit. Syracuse hopes to return talented freshman guard Judah Mintz, who finished second in ACC Freshman of the Year voting, but he (like Starling) isn’t a super effective floor-spacer. Still, if Starling can work on his shot, he and Mintz would make for one of the ACC’s best backcourts next season. — Marks

Backstory

Starling started 24 games as a freshman for the Fighting Irish last season, averaging 11.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

The 6-foot-4 guard was recruited by Autry when he was an assistant coach, and the Orange made him his first scholarship offer in 2019. Starling initially chose Notre Dame over Duke, Stanford, Syracuse and Alabama.

College men's basketball: Syracuse adds hometown player in transfer Starling (yahoo.com; St Croix)

The Syracuse University men's basketball team landed hometown product and highly-coveted guard JJ Starling via transfer Tuesday.

Starling, a 6-foot-4 combo guard, confirmed plans to join SU after one season at Notre Dame with On3 Sports, which had him as the top-rated player to enter the transfer portal that opened Monday.

Starling grew up in Baldwinsville and starred for the Bees until playing his final two high school seasons at La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind. He was a McDonald's High School All-American and a consensus five-star recruit in the 2022 class.

Starling told On3 Sports in his announcement that he identified SU as a great fit and has a very strong relationship with new head coach, Adrian Autry.

"The coaching staff at Cuse are people I know I can put my trust in to handle and manage my career the right way," Starling told the outlet. "Also, being able to play on one of the biggest stages in college basketball is noteworthy, and being able to have my parents and other relatives alongside me and come out to my games and support me sounds amazing."

The intriguing addition of Starling is the first domino to fall in the SU offseason.

Starling's immediate fit will be more clear following decisions by the incumbent starting backcourt of Judah Mintz and Joe Girard III.

Mintz garnered All-ACC honorable mention as a freshman and could potentially explore entering the NBA Draft, while Girard III could return for an added year of eligibility allotted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starling could slot into either starting role if needed after averaging 11.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game as a freshman for the Fighting Irish.

WHAT SYRACUSE IS GETTING

Rob Cassidy, Rivals Basketball Recruiting Director: A former McDonald's All-American, Starling has the tools to be a future pro and flashed some of that upside this year at Notre Dame. He has suitable size and is capable of playing either guard spot, which will be a nice perk for the Orange if Judan Mintz decides to return for another season. Sterling is an average 3-point shooter, but really shines when it comes to getting to the bucket and finishing through contact. He has a pull-up jumper in his arsenal as well and has become a much better passer since I first saw him years ago.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR SYRACUSE

This was a splashy way to start the Red Autry era. Autry was Starling's primary recruiter in high school, and Syracuse was one of Starling's finalists before he ultimately chose Notre Dame. If Mintz stays, the two would form a dynamic backcourt, with two of the top guards in the 2022 class at the top of the zone. If Mintz decides to move on, Starling, a combo guard, would be a plug-and-play at the point guard spot.

Jackpot! JJ Starling Transfers to Syracuse (orangefizz.net; Ezeir)

The post-Jim Boeheim era is less than a week fresh, but it has already delivered in a monumental way. Former five-star recruit and McDonald’s All American JJ Starling is heading home, where he grew up in Baldwinsville, to join SU after one season at Notre Dame. In other words, the Adrian Autry reign is here.

After taking lead of Starling’s recruitment last year, Autry’s role as the Orange’s lead recruiter, and now head coach, works its magic just days after the transfer portal opened. SU’s hometown tug on the CNY native seemed to be trending upward last year when the guard kept the Cuse in his top five, along with Duke, Notre Dame, Stanford and Northwestern. But he ultimately chose the Fighting Irish. After averaging over 11 points per game last season for ND, amid the news that longtime Irish head coach Mike Brey would retire at the end of the year, Starling’s services ended up in the portal, and Autry’s role as a part of Syracuse has paid dividends just one season after the shock of losing the five star to another ACC program.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star target’s team is No. 1 seed in GEICO Nationals (itlh; Adler)

Curtis Givens III, a relatively new Syracuse basketball recruiting target, and his teammates at a powerhouse hoops academy in Florida have earned the No. 1 seed at the upcoming GEICO Nationals, an eight-team tournament that will ultimately crown a high-school national champion for the 2022-23 season.

The 2023 GEICO Nationals will take place from Thursday, March 30, until Saturday, April 1, at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Ft. Myers, Fla.

Givens’ squad, the Montverde Academy (23-2) in Montverde, Fla., is the No. 1 seed in this year’s GEICO Nationals. The Eagles have won the past two versions of this prestigious event.

The other invitees to the 2023 GEICO Nationals are as follows:
No. 2 seed Long Island Lutheran High School (20-2) in Brookville, N.Y.
No. 3 seed Prolific Prep (31-1) in Napa Valley, Calif.
No. 4 seed Link Academy (24-1) in Branson, Mo.
No. 5 seed St. Paul VI Catholic High School (31-3) in Chantilly, Va.
No. 6 seed IMG Academy (17-7) in Bradenton, Fla.
No. 7 seed AZ Compass Prep School (22-6) in Chandler, Ariz.
No. 8 seed Sunrise Christian Academy (20-7) in Bel Aire, Kan.

Syracuse basketball target Curtis Givens III is set to play in the GEICO Nationals.

The 6-foot-3 Givens, who hails from Memphis, Tenn., is a four-star point guard in the 2024 class. In mid-February, he said that the Orange coaching staff had offered a scholarship to him.

Givens transferred to the Montverde Academy from the Memphis University School prior to the 2022-23 term commencing. He is rated as a top-60 national prospect and a top-10 point guard within the junior cycle, per several recruiting services.

Besides Syracuse basketball, Givens’ offer sheet also includes Memphis, Ole Miss, LSU, Illinois, Tennessee, Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, Georgetown, St. John’s, Mississippi State, Missouri, Texas A&M, Wake Forest and Xavier.

Reliving 2003: Syracuse gets ‘punched’ by UConn and ousted from Big East Tournament (PS; $; Croyle)

ORANGE OUSTED

CONNECTICUT GOES 2-FOR-2 AGAINST SU

By Mike Waters Staff writer

The Connecticut Huskies did more than just beat the Syracuse Orangemen in Friday’s Big East Tournament semifinals. They physically beat up the Orange.

Connecticut’s rough and rugged defense forced Syracuse into its worst shooting performance of the season, whipping the Orangemen 80-67 at Madison Square Garden. Syracuse made 23 of their 80 shots for 28.8 percent.

It was Syracuse’s worst shooting game in Big East Tournament history, breaking a record set in 1993 when the Orange made just 33.3 percent from the field but still beat Pittsburgh.

Connecticut punched Syracuse in the mouth with an early 19-4 run. And while the Orangemen rallied back to within four points late in the first half, the Huskies pounced again in the opening minutes of the second half.

The Huskies scored 24 points in the first eight minutes after halftime to claim a 60-42 lead, and the game was never in doubt after that.

“Their defense was excellent,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “We were just 9-for-42 in the first half, so we’re going to struggle. We didn’t play well offensively and I thought they did a tremendous job defensively.”

The loss snapped Syracuse’s eight-game winning streak. Syracuse’s last loss came at Connecticut on Feb. 10, and Syracuse’s offensive miscues in this game mirrored the troubles it had with the Huskies a month ago. In that game, Syracuse made 29.9 percent of its shots in a 75-61 loss, which was its worst shooting game of the season until Friday night.

Syracuse freshman Carmelo Anthony led the Orangemen with 29 points, but he did so while paying a heavy price. Anthony went 9-for-28 from the field. The Huskies grabbed, held and pushed Anthony from tip to buzzer, trying to take the 6-foot-8 frosh out of his game. Anthony, who went 10-for-13 from the free-throw line, also had 15 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season.

Survive and advance: Clutch shot from Jamarius Burton sends Pitt to first round of NCAA tournament (PG; Hiles)

Jamarius Burton didn’t play long, but when it mattered most, Pitt’s leader stepped up big. With his team down by a point with under 30 seconds left, Jeff Capel knew who had to have the basketball, and his faith was rewarded.

A clutch basket from fifth-year senior Burton put Pitt ahead for good with nine seconds left. A defensive stop on the following possession solidified a 60-59 victory over Mississippi State on Tuesday evening in the NCAA tournament’s First Four round.

“It was a tough game,” Burton said after the win. “These guys were continuing to fight. When I had the ball in my hands the last 30 seconds or so, I just told myself I was built for it, and I just got to a spot and let it go, and I had complete confidence in myself. That was pretty much everything that went down.”

With starting center Fede Federiko out due to a knee injury he sustained last week in the ACC tournament, the Panthers (23-11) formulated a gameplan that attacked the Bulldogs (21-13) in their weakest areas.

Entering the game as the worst 3-point shooting team in the country, Pitt dared Mississippi State to win from the outside, which it looked to be capable of doing early on. The Bulldogs opened the contest drilling four of their first five looks from behind the arc. However, as the game continued, the outside heat transitioned to the other team.

“Coach did a great job putting us in positions knowing where they were going to be feeding the ball off of their plays and execution,” Burton said. “And for us, we just wanted to be there for our brother. We understood the type of battle he was going to be in, all-conference type of guy that he was going to be going against, so we just wanted to have his back out there.”

While Mississippi State dominated on the glass, the Panthers relied on their veteran backcourt to make up the difference with shooting and stingy defense. A 62% shooting effort from 3-point range allowed Pitt to take a 35-34 lead into the half. The lead was aided by eight forced Bulldogs turnovers, which the Panthers turned into 12 points.

Heavy snow to keep falling across CNY, though worst of winter storm spares some (snowfall map) (PS; Kirk)

Heavy snow will continue to fall across most of Central New York, but some areas are being spared the worst of the storm on Tuesday.

Syracuse is one of the lucky ones with only 4 to 6 more inches of snow expected, said Bryan Greenblatt, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The snow will be wet in the morning and then become drier in the afternoon, Greenblatt said.

Winds will pick up in the afternoon, he said. Syracuse could see up to 31 mph winds, according to the National Weather Service.

Oneida, Onondaga, Cortland, southern Cayuga, Madison, and Chenango counties are expected to get 5 to 8 inches in lower elevations, and 8 to 15 inches in higher elevations in areas south of the Thruway, weather officials said.

Some areas of southern Onondaga and a lot of Cortland County fall in the 12 to 18 inches range.

In parts of Central New York snow is at times expected to fall at one and a half inches per hour.

All of Central New York remains under a winter storm warning. A state of emergency remains in effect.

Most area schools are closed for the day.

The snow will make travel difficult to impossible, weather officials said. Scattered power outages and downed tree limbs are possible.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office both issues traffic advisories asking people to avoid unnecessary travel. Around 2 p.m. the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office issued a no unnecessary travel advisory.

As of 7 a.m. just 39 NYSEG customers were without power in Cayuga County. National Grid was not reporting any outages in Central New York.
