Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day!

Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.

There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.

SU basketball 2023-24: How does a ‘positionless’ team with multiple decision-makers sound? (PS; $; Ditota)

As we wait to see what Syracuse’s men’s basketball roster will look like after the portal and the NBA Draft declarations clear, there seem to be a few things we know about the 2023-24 team.

New head coach Adrian Autry said he wants his team to play aggressively on both ends of the floor. He wants to play uptempo, to return to the up-and-down pace that has largely eluded the Orange in the past dozen or so seasons. Those teams, all of which played a 2-3 zone defense, were ranked in the Top 100 in overall tempo just twice since 2010, according to Kenpom.com. They generally played at a medium-to-slow pace.

The zone typically dragged SU down in overall tempo, since opponents spent a lot of the shot clock poking, prodding and passing the ball looking for exploitable crevices. (SU’s 2010 team ranked 59th overall in tempo, but fourth in offensive pace.) Autry has said he plans to use some man defense, some zone in 2023-24.

Coaches like to say they want to run. It’s an appealing sell on the recruiting trail.

The makeup of players, though, dictates what style a team can employ.

The Orange has a roster right now constructed more for speed than a half-court grind.

Judah Mintz, who remains in the NBA Draft until he declares otherwise, could be a pace-pusher, but even without him, the Orange has uptempo options.

The guards: Mintz, JJ Starling, Chance Westry, Quadir Copeland, Justin Taylor.

What Syracuse transfer Joe Girard's commitment means for Clemson basketball (yahoo.com; Long)

Clemson basketball has landed a fourth player via the transfer portal and its second from within the ACC. Syracuse guard Joseph Girard III committed to Brad Brownell and the Tigers on Sunday.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound shooting guard visited Clemson on April 20. He also visited LSU and had in-home visits with Clemson, Notre Dame and BYU.

Girard could still go pro. When he announced his decision to transfer March 24, he also declared he would enter the NBA Draft without hiring an agent, maintaining his college eligibility. If he chooses to return to the college ranks, it will be for Clemson.

In his four seasons at Syracuse, Girard never averaged fewer than 9.8 points per game. He had his best season as a senior in 2022-23, leading the team with 16.4 points per game and shooting 40.3% from the field and 38.1% from beyond the 3-point arc.

Girard joins former NC State guard Jack Clark as Clemson's second transfer from within the conference. Including former Air Force guard Jake Heidbreder and former UNC Greensboro forward Bas Leyte, Brownell and his staff have now added four players via the portal. Heidbreder is another shooting guard who brings 3-point prowess to the roster, but Clemson will have to wait to see it: The rising junior will have back surgery and will miss Clemson's 2023-24 season.

Syracuse basketball hosted one of the top transfer big men on the market in former Florida State center Naheem McLeod for an official visit over the weekend. The 7-4 big enjoyed his time on campus.

"The visit was good," McLeod said. "Got a chance to meet a lot of the guys. The coaching staff welcomed me with open arms. Talked to me about their vision for me at Syracuse. I already knew a couple of the guys coming in, so I'm not playing with anybody I don't know or whose game I'm not familiar with. So it's going to be fun if I go there."

The message from the Syracuse coaches was simple. That he could be the missing piece they need.

"The goal is to come in, work right away, be that dominant piece in the middle," McLeod said. "They have exceptional guards coming in, like Chance Westry and JJ Starling. Those guys are high level players. They also have guys that are still there now like Benny Williams and everybody else. I think our athleticism and the speed that Syracuse wants to play at would be right for me."

Freeman, a 6-foot-9 forward, is one of the best players in the 2024 class. He’s ranked as a consensus top five forward and the No. 32 player overall.

Earlier this year, Freeman spoke to On3 about his interest in Syracuse.

“They have a history of getting players like me, Jerami Grant, Carmelo Anthony to the league,” Freeman told Jamie Shaw. “They recruit the DMV really hard with players like Judah Mintz and Benny Williams on their roster. That was my dream school growing up, so all of that is really attractive.”

Syracuse Basketball: Prolific-scoring recruit nears 5 stars and eyes NIBC (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2025 four-star priority target Jerry Easter II from Ohio was an All-American as a sophomore and is off to a hot start on the AAU circuit this spring.

The 6-foot-4 guard recently vaulted into the top 25 across the country in his class, according to one of the primary recruiting services.

After two All-American seasons at the Emmanuel Christian School in Toledo, Ohio, a recent media report says that Easter will head somewhere else for his junior year in the 2023-24 campaign, with a likely destination being the loaded 10-member National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (“NIBC”).

This spring, the consensus top-50 Easter is competing up a division in grassroots basketball for the 17U team of the Columbus, Ohio-based All Ohio Red in Nike’s EYBL league.

When the EYBL held its second of two live periods toward the end of April at Legacy Park in Mesa, Ariz., Easter averaged 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, earning All-Event third-team honors from The Circuit.

Four-star guard Jerry Easter II speaks highly of Syracuse basketball.

The main recruiting Web sites deem Easter as a top-50 national prospect and a top-10 point guard/shooting guard in the 2025 class.

Bed Bath & Beyond not long after it opened in 2008.

National retailer poised to move into former Camillus Bed Bath & Beyond space (PS; $; Doran)

A national clothing retailer is planning to move into the former Bed Bath & Beyond space in Fairmount Fair in Camillus.

Old Navy is poised to move into the space, which has been vacant since Bed Bath & Beyond closed its Fairmount Fair location in late 2020. It had been open since 2008.

The town of Camillus planning board is reviewing the site plan for the store, which is at 3579 W. Genesee St.

Camillus town officials said there isn’t a timeline yet. A sign was posted in the store saying Old Navy is “coming soon.”

Old Navy, a clothing store for men, women and children, has locations in DeWitt, at Destiny USA and in Clay. The Clay store on Route 31 opened in January, after it moved out of Great Northern Mall when the shopping center closed.

Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy in April. After first closing the Fairmount Fair store in late 2020, it more recently closed its locations in Clay and DeWitt.
