Welcome to National Notebook Day!

First held in 2016, National Notebook Day is celebrated by notebook enthusiasts, who write in notebooks or planners and share pictures of their notebooks on social media using the hashtag #NationalNotebookDay. Sweepstakes are also held each year, sponsored by May Designs—the company that came up with the day—and other companies involved with office supplies, notebooks, and stationery.

In our twenty-first-century digital age, notebooks sometimes seem like a throwback to a time of the past, although they are more popular than ever, being used for numerous purposes, like writing, note-taking, drawing, and scrapbooking. This is good news, because it has also been shown that they may benefit cognitive function more than their digital counterparts. They are stacks of paper pages that are bound together and often ruled. Some common bindings used today includes spiral, comb, sewn, clasp, padding, disc, perfect, and padding. The first of these is usually cheaper than the others, and the last of these uses glue to hold pages together. Notebooks generally have a cover that is made from a different material than what is inside.

Girard goes deep on decision to leave SU: ‘I had an idea where I wanted to be’ (podcast) (PS; podcast; Waters)

Joe Girard says there’s no bad blood between him and the Syracuse basketball program following his transfer to ACC rival Clemson. Except for one area.

In an appearance on the Inside Syracuse Basketball podcast, Girard said things are good between him and the SU basketball coaches until they get on the golf course together.

Girard said he has gone golfing with new Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry as well as assistants Gerry McNamara and Allen Griffin. And while their relationships remain on solid footing, things can still get testy on the links.

That’s one of many revealing parts of Girard’s conversation with the host of the podcast, Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters.

Girard explained his reasons for leaving Syracuse after four years with the Orange. He detailed the recruiting process in the portal and how he insisted that any coach who wanted him to transfer come to his home in Glens Falls, New York, so he could see who was really interested in him.

Syracuse basketball reaches out to Kansas transfer, a former 5-star center (itlh; Adler)

Kansas freshman center Ernest Udeh Jr., who recently entered the NCAA’s transfer portal, has heard from numerous schools, including Syracuse basketball, according to a tweet from 247Sports national analyst Travis Branham.

Per media reports, the 6-foot-11, 250-pound Udeh, who was a McDonald’s All-American as a senior in high school, is currently on a visit to fellow Atlantic Coast Conference team Duke.

According to Branham, schools that have reached out to Udeh include Duke, Kansas State, TCU, Arkansas, Ohio State, Texas Tech, Florida State, Iowa, Memphis, Tennessee, UCF, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Missouri, Auburn, the Orange and Georgetown.

Syracuse's Ceiling Will Be Determined By Judah Mintz's Decision (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

Amidst a recent recruiting renaissance, there is palpable excitement among Syracuse fans. Adrian Autry and company have struck big with high school prospects adding Donnie Freeman to the Class of ’24 and Naheem McLeod to this year’s roster via the transfer portal. But regardless of how many more players the Orange add (especially over the next two weeks), we shouldn’t make any predictions until May 31. Why is that date so significant? It’s the deadline for players to withdraw their names from the NBA Draft pool. In other words, we’ll in all likelihood know by the end of the month whether Judah Mintz is staying or going.

The NBA Draft Combine is taking place right now, and you can rest assured Mintz is participating.

Here we have Mintz working on the main thing that drew him criticism throughout the season and has had a lot of fans (definitely no bias involved) say he should come back for one more year. As a freshman, he shot just over 30% from beyond the arc. That is well below par for an NBA point guard. Granted, he showed flashes of improvement near the end of the season, including a 4-4 performance from deep against Clemson (overshadowed by the blowout L). Were those flashes enough to remove the worry of NBA scouts?

When you dive into Mintz’s three-point struggles, the question becomes are his other qualities enough to offset that issue? His athleticism is off the charts, he can go off for 20 at any instant, and he showed potential as a passer too.

But, Mintz did tend to get too careless, as evidenced by the catastrophic endings of the Miami and North Carolina games. There are a lot of good things about Mintz’s game, but there’s plenty to improve on. There’s no such thing as a “perfect” prospect- even Jordan and LeBron had things to iron out when they got to the NBA. But there’s a lot to iron out for Mintz. Are his strengths enough to offset that?

Adrian Autry's 2023-24 Roster Building is Complete (orangefizz.net; Frank)

Syracuse basketball has its roster set for next season, and that’s with or without Judah Mintz in the picture. The Orange lost Joe Girard III, Symir Torrence, John Bol Ajak, and Jesse Edwards to the transfer portal, and have replaced them with JJ Starling, Chance Westry, and Naheem McLeod, all of whom can provide different skill sets that Syracuse didn’t have last season.

McLeod’s commitment Monday solidified that and gives SU a starting center for opening night, someone who can do a lot of the dirty work on defense, block shots, and provide an intimidating presence in the paint. On offense, he’s a screen setter and someone who can finish lobs at the rim. Paired with guards like Starling, Westry, Quadir Copeland, and potentially Mintz, Syracuse’s offense can look markedly different than last season when Girard, Mintz, and Edwards were the only offense the majority of the time.

McLeod’s commitment is the fourth total since Autry became the head coach, three via the portal, and Donnie Freeman is the only high school player in the class of 2024. Based on what McLeod told Syracuse.com, Autry’s recruiting skills are shining so far.

New York Department of Transportations bridge maintenance team works on the I-81 exit to I-690 West Thursday, June 30, 2022. N. Scott Trimble | strimble@syracuse.com

Detour alert: I-690 ramp to I-81 north will close for repairs Saturday (PS; Breidenbach)

The state Department of Transportation will close the ramp from Interstate 690 west to Interstate 81 north Saturday for repairs to the bridge joints.

Between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., drivers will have to continue on I-690 west to the Geddes Street exit and take the detour to Spencer and Bear streets to get to I-81 north.

The elevated bridges are scheduled to be torn down in 2026 as part of a $2.25 billion project. The I-690 west ramp is scheduled to be torn down and rebuilt to connect to the new Business Loop 81.

The state DOT spends millions of dollars each year to keep Syracuse’s elevated highway safe until it is removed. Almost all of the bridges and ramps are rated in poor condition. The bridges, built in the 1960s, reached the end of their “useful life” in 2017.

The state is responsible for maintaining one million square feet of deck at least 22 feet off the ground. That’s about 11 football fields worth of concrete.

Drivers should also be aware, the state DOT is now using cameras to catch drivers who speed in work zones. About 3,500 warning tickets have been mailed to drivers. Today is the first day the state will fine motorists.

Interestingly, 50% of the players getting that extra year due to Covid hit the portal "to experience something new", per Joe Gerard.
