Welcome to D-Day!

Beginning in the spring of 1940, in the midst of World War II, Nazi Germany started occupying the northern part of France. They gained complete control of the area in May, when the British evacuated Dunkirk, a coastal city, during the Battle of France. But the Allies always hoped to return. In 1942, the United States and Britain began thinking about an invasion across the English Channel. Hitler, anticipating an invasion somewhere—although he did not know exactly where—put Erwin Rommel in charge of defense of a large swath of coastal areas and in charge of the creation of an Atlantic Wall, which consisted of fortifications of bunkers, landmines, and other beach and water obstacles.

Syracuse Basketball: No preseason love for SU from pundits means squat (itlh; Adler)

Even with the announced return of point guard Judah Mintz for his sophomore year on the Hill, the Syracuse basketball roster is unlikely to receive a lot of preseason love from experts as it pertains to way-too-early top-25 rankings and placements within mock fields of 68 for the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

To that, I say, who freaking cares? I’ll add that this is no surprise whatsoever, and I’ll explain why in a second.

After the 6-foot-3 Mintz revealed not too long ago that he would withdraw his name from the 2023 NBA Draft and come back to the Orange for the 2023-24 campaign, that set the ‘Cuse roster for the upcoming season at 13 scholarship players.

It’s an exciting and intriguing roster for sure. There are a lot of athletic guards and wings on this roster. There is a ton of depth at all position groups. First-year head coach Adrian Autry and his assistants will have at their disposal many interesting and potentially potent line-up combinations.….

ACC basketball: A roster breakdown of who’s gone, who’s back and who’s on the way (PS; Waters)

Get your scorecard! Can’t tell the players without a scorecard!

The ol’ ballpark refrain has never been truer than in college basketball these days. The transfer portal, the extra year of eligibility due to Covid and the NBA draft have all combined to wreak havoc on college basketball rosters.

But the portal has closed on all but graduate transfers, the deadline to withdraw from the NBA draft has passed and recruiting has, for all intents and purposes, wrapped up for the 2023 class.

The Syracuse Orange experienced all aspects of modern-day roster movement with two established starters transferring out, four transfers portaling their way into the program and the big news last week that point guard Judah Mintz had removed his name from the NBA draft.…

Add Dwight Buycks to the Boeheim’s Army roster.

You might remember the name.

Buycks, a 6-foot-3 guard, played at Marquette from 2009-11, and was a key member of the Golden Eagles alumni team in The Basketball Tournament. The Golden Eagles won the $1 million winner-take-all prize money in TBT’s 2020 bubble, but disbanded after last summer.

Boeheim’s Army general manager Shaun Belbey said he considered Buycks a potential Boeheim’s Army member as soon as he learned the Marquette alumni would not longer have a team. The two connected on Instagram about a week ago, Belbey said, and “made it official,” soon after that internet conversation.….

Upstate NY breathes unhealthy air for a second day as 160 Quebec wildfires rage (PS; Coin)

Upstate New York is under an air quality alert for the second day in a row as smoke from Quebec wildfires continues to flow south.

The state has issued an air quality alert for virtually all of Upstate through midnight. The alert is for fine particulates that can cause eye and nose irritation, and can burrow deep into the lungs and bloodstream.

People with heart or lung conditions should avoid strenuous activity outdoors and stay indoors, the state health department said.

Upstate New York was under a similar alert all day Monday.

Canada has been burning on both coasts over the past month, from British Columbia and the western prairies to the Atlantic maritime provinces, destroying more than 10,000 acres of forest and grassland. More than 15,000 people were evacuated from coastal Quebec.

As of Monday, 160 fires continued to burn in Quebec alone.

The smoke from Quebec is also causing hazy skies again across the Northeast. The haze will block some sunlight and thus keep temperatures a couple of degrees cooler than they would have been otherwise, the National Weather Service said.….
