Welcome to World Sea Turtle Day!

World Sea Turtle Day honors and highlights the importance of sea turtles and recognizes sea turtle conservation and protection efforts around the world. It is held on the birthdate of noted sea turtle biologist Archie Carr, who founded the Sea Turtle Conservancy and helped create the community that works to protect sea turtles today.

Only a fraction of the sea turtles that once populated the Earth remain on it today. Sea turtles have been killed for their meat, eggs, skin, and shells. Their feeding and nesting habitats face destruction, and they are under threat from pollution. In particular, they are threatened by plastic dumped into the oceans.

Former Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim is adjusting to retirement and transitioning into a new role with the university. After Boeheim's 47-year career came to an end in March, he said he was relieved to be free from the worry of navigating another basketball campaign. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

Boeheim, retired and reflective: ‘I don’t think we’ve won enough games the last 2 years’ (PS; $; Ditota)

Jim Boeheim is mulling over some ideas to fill the time once consumed by the demands of a head basketball coach.

For the past 47 years, summers and early fall have been generally free from the churn of team concerns, the incessant judgment of wins and losses. But soon enough, Boeheim will feel the pull of practice, the absence of the only life he’s ever really lived.

He is talking about doing radio and television commentary on college basketball. He and Syracuse University have recently hammered out contract obligations for his new job as special assistant to the director of athletics.

For the most part, though, he is a Hall-of-Fame basketball coach who is free to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants to do it.

His decision to step away from coaching, he said, had nothing to do with the complexities of NIL or the transfer portal, two hot-button topics roiling college sports. He’s endured and adjusted to plenty of change in college basketball over his nearly half-century at the SU helm.

“This is strictly I don’t think we’ve won enough games the last two years,” he said.

In a lengthy interview over nine holes Tuesday during the Jim Boeheim Golf Tournament at the luxe Atunyote Golf Club, Boeheim discussed the awkward way his career ended in Greensboro, his retirement reasoning, his relationship with SU chancellor Kent Syverud and his plans for the future.

He played golf with his friend Bram Palm, his son Jimmy, and Jimmy’s friend Ryan Roland. To kick off the charity event benefiting his foundation, he regaled golfers with a joke about Juli’s insistence he find something to do with himself and reiterated his faith in his successor, Adrian Autry.

Boeheim’s Army adds a 12th (and probably) final player (PS; Ditota)

Add Jamil Wilson to the now 12-man Boeheim’s Army roster.

Wilson, a 6-foot-7 forward who finished his college basketball career at Marquette, is likely the final addition to a Boeheim’s Army team that will compete for $1 million winner-take-all money in The Basketball Tournament.

Wilson, 32, played for the Golden Eagles, a Marquette alumni team that won a TBT title in 2020. He has played in TBT every summer since 2017.

Wilson played on a two-way NBA contract with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2017-18 and has vast experience playing professionally overseas.

“We felt like we could use another forward, another guy who can make shots,” said Boeheim’s Army GM Shaun Belbey. “Jamil’s one of the best players to play in TBT. Consistently, he’s one of the best players year in and year out. He’s going to be huge for us.”

Wilson is a friend of Dwight Buycks, another Marquette alum who has pledged to play for Boeheim’s Army this year. They were Golden Eagles’ teammates before that TBT team disbanded after last summer.

Boeheim’s Army’s roster now looks like this: Tyus Battle, Andrew White, BJ Johnson, Paschal Chukwu, Chris McCullough, Jimmy Boeheim, Rakeem Christmas, Matt Morgan, Deandre Kane, Grant Riller, Buycks and Wilson.

Paula's Donuts in West Seneca, NY. Best donuts in Upstate New York search in 2018.Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com

Sweet triumph: Two Upstate NY doughnut shops named some of the best in the country (PS; Hernandez)

There’s nothing like sinking your sweet tooth into a locally-made fresh doughnut. Though you may already have your favorite local pasty shop, the Yelp community has made a list of the best doughnuts in America, including two in Upstate New York.

Yelp recently released their top 100 doughnut shops for 2023 and Western New York’s Paula’s Donuts and Beacon’s Glazed Over Donuts have made the cut.

Paula’s Donuts in Tonawanda, was named the best in the state in 2021 by Food & Wine Magazine. Consistently selling award winning donuts by the dozen, Paula’s has over 30 varieties to choose from. Whether you want classic glazed, fruity filled, crammed with cannoli filling or cookie dough, the menu has something for everyone.

TV star’s Alton Brown said Paula’s sour cream old fashioned cake donut was among the best donuts he has ever had.

Paula’s Donuts has four locations and will soon be moving their Clarence location to a new spot in Amherst, which is planned to be their biggest location yet, according to Buffalo Business First.

Glazed Over Donuts in downtown Beacon is also no stranger to accolades as they have been voted the best doughnuts in the Hudson Valley six times by Hudson Valley Magazine readers, according to their website.

The Dutchess County sweet treat shop creates made-to-order creations as each order starts with a naked doughnut and comes with any combination of one glaze, one topping and one drizzle with a wide variety of flavors.
