Welcome to Juneteenth!
Although Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863, it was not until after the war was over that slaves became free in Texas, possibly because the Proclamation could not be enforced there, or because news of the Proclamation had not been spread there. The war ended in April of 1865, but word did not reach Texas until the following month, and it was not until June that the Confederate Army in the area surrendered. On June 19th, Union General Gordon Granger read "General Order No. 3" in Galveston, which said all slaves were free. The next year freed slaves began celebrating not only the proclamation, but the freeing of all slaves in general, and gave the day the name Juneteenth. Over time the celebrations spread to other parts of the country. During the Great Migrations after World War I and World War II, when large amounts of African Americans moved north, they brought Juneteenth traditions with them. Although this helped spread the holiday, in some cases it made it harder for people to celebrate, as it was harder to take time off from work during the week at urban factory jobs than farm jobs. Juneteenth celebrations also were given a boost after the 1968 Poor People's March, when returning attendees brought the tradition back to their communities. By the 1980's and 1990's, Juneteenth celebrations were prevalent all around the country, and almost all states now recognize the day in some way. As of 2021, it has been recognized as a federal holiday.

Boeheim and retirement: Inside a revealing walk with former SU basketball coach (podcast) (PS; podcast; Waters)
Last week Syracuse.com reporter Donna Ditota had the chance to interview Jim Boeheim. It wasn’t your ordinary interview in terms of both Boeheim’s comments and the setting for the interview.
Ditota followed along for nine holes as Boeheim played in his annual charity golf event at Turning Stone. Ditota and Boeheim even abandoned their carts and walked a few holes together.
Boeheim opened up about why he decided to retire at the end of the 2022-23 season. It had nothing to do with the transfer portal or NIL, he said.
“I don’t think we’ve won enough games the last two years,’' Boeheim told Ditota.
A reflective Boeheim talked about the awkward press conference following Syracuse’s loss to Wake Forest in the ACC tournament. He looked ahead to what he will be doing in his new role with Syracuse University and also what he won’t be doing in terms of potential opportunities in the media.
I also asked Donna about Boeheim’s golf game, how he interacted with son Jimmy out on the course and his relaxed demeanor.

Budweiser Clydesdales coming to Baldwinsville to mark local brewery’s 40th anniversary (PS; Cazentre)
Forty years ago this month, the famed Budweiser Clydesdales came to Central New York to celebrate the grand opening of the Anheuser-Busch brewery just outside of Baldwinsville.
On June 23, the 8-horse hitch (and their Dalmatian companion) will return to mark the 40th anniversary of what has long been the largest brewery in New York state.
The horse team takes its “Ride through B’ville” starting at 2 p.m. June 23. According to a Facebook post from the Greater Baldwinsville Chamber of Commerce, the team will start at St. Mary’s Church at 47 Syracuse St., then proceed across the bridge over the Seneca River and up Oswego Street to First Presbyterian Church.
The Clydesdales will also likely make some beer deliveries along the way. The Clydesdale team has made previous appearances in Baldwinsville and at the brewery, most recently in 2017 and 2018.
The brewery off Route 31 in the Radisson business park near Baldwinsville is one of 12 operated by Anheuser-Busch InBev breweries in the United States. It opened in 1976 as a Schlitz brewery. Anheuser-Busch bought in the early 1980s, and after a brief shutdown for renovations reopened it in 1983.
In 2008, Anheuser-Busch was taken over by InBev, a Belgium-based global beer conglomerate, creating the new company, Anheuser-Busch InBev. It is the largest beer company in the world. The company has roughly 600 employees in the Baldwinsville brewery.
