Syracuse basketball showing interest in 4-star teammate of Kiyan Anthony (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball coaches are reportedly showing interest in a four-star teammate of Orange priority recruit Kiyan Anthony.
On June 15, when college coaches could start initiating direct communication with players in the 2025 class, the Orange coaching staff reached out to 2025 four-star wing Jacob Ross, according to a tweet at that time from scout/recruiting insider Colby Giacubeno.
The 247Sports Web site also says that Ross is receiving interest from Syracuse basketball, among numerous other schools. The 6-foot-5 Ross, who hails from Manassas, Va., is a talented guard/small forward and rising junior at the powerhouse Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y. On the AAU circuit, he competes for the Baltimore-based Team Melo in Nike’s EYBL league.
The 6-foot-5 Anthony, a 2025 four-star shooting guard out of New York City and the son of ‘Cuse legend Carmelo Anthony, will spend his junior year during the 2023-24 campaign at Long Island Lutheran, which is a member of the loaded 10-team National Interscholastic Basketball Conference (“NIBC”) and played in the prestigious 2023 GEICO Nationals this spring.

Donnie Freeman's stellar second half was a big reason why Team Takeover won the Peach Jam championship game over Vegas Elite. His performance in that game, as well as Peach Jam in its entirety, landed him on the All Peach Jam First Team. Those are just the latest accolades for the Syracuse commit during what has been an extremely impressive year.
In February, he led St. John's College High to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship. He was also named First Team All WCAC, First Team All DC and First Team All Met.
In addition, Freeman led St. John's College High to the Torrey Pines Holiday Tournament title becoming the first East Coast team to do it since 2011 (DeMatha). Freeman was named MVP of that tournament. Freeman was also MVP of the National High School Hoops Festival where he led St. John's College to that title.

A couple of weeks ago we told you about new NCAA rules regarding uniform numbers and speculated on some creative ways Syracuse Orange players could embrace the changes.
And then they flipped it like this...
So no one wants to go with 88 next season? Cool cool...well that means we had to dig in deeper to find the real reason for these number selections because a story that Syracuse didn’t order anything about a 5 would be sad.
So Chris Bell switches from 0 to 4 so Kansas transfer Kyle Cuffe, Jr. gets 0. Maybe Cuffe was able to procure the number by offering Bell his choice of a gift card to either OIP or Wings Over Syracuse? Bell agrees and grabs 4 because Final Four is where this team wants to go in 2024...and we all know what happens when you put two 4s together.
JJ Starling takes #2 because he wants to remind himself that there’s always room for improvement and because he’s looking for a NIL deal with the Ticonderoga pencil company.

Former Carrier Dome announcer Carl Eilenberg, seen here in a file photo from 2006, has died at the age of 93.
Eilenberg will forever be Voice of the Dome: 'The Bob Sheppard of Syracuse' (PS; $; Axe)
You knew it was game time when Carl Eilenberg’s voice came over the public address at the Carrier Dome.
It was Eilenberg who made the names of thousands of athletes for Syracuse University and its opponents echo in the Dome from the day it opened in 1980 until 2005.
Eilenberg died at his home in Jensen Beach, Florida, on July 10, according to his obituary. He was 93 years old.
“Carl Eilenberg was the Bob Sheppard of Syracuse,” said Michael Veley, who took over for Eilenberg and is the current voice of Dome. “He was graceful, gracious and a genuine person. He was a historian of the game. He took everything seriously and the responsibility of being a voice of Syracuse Athletics.”
Eilenberg got to play ringmaster at some of the greatest games in the history of the Carrier Dome (now known as the JMA Wireless Dome).
Of the hundreds of games Eilenberg called, Veley says it was Donovan McNabb’s game-winning touchdown pass to Stephen Brominski against Virginia Tech in 1998 where Eilenberg heard the Dome roar the loudest.
Veley also cited a football moment in 1998 that stands out of Eilenberg creating an audio time capsule when former Syracuse quarterback Donovan McNabb exited a 66-13 blowout win over Miami to the theme from “Superman.”
The stand-and-clap routine at men’s basketball games?
Eilenberg had a hand in launching that at Manley Field House in the late 1970s before it carried over to the Dome.

Savannah Bananas bring their viral ‘Banana Ball’ to Upstate NY, tickets on sale soon (PS; Hernandez)
The hottest ticket this year, aside from Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour,” could be the chance to get wild with the Savannah Bananas on their “world tour” stops in Upstate New York. And your chance to buy your admission is coming soon.
The Banana Ball players will make their final tour stops on Sept. 14 at NBT Stadium in Syracuse and on Sept. 16 at Double Day Field in Cooperstown.
The presale has come and gone and other reports have said the 2023 world tour is sold out, but the Bananas’ website reads that if there are any tickets left for their games they will go on sale approximately two months before a selected city’s game day.
That means for Syracuse, it would happen on July 14 and Cooperstown, on July 16.
For those unfamiliar with the screaming yellow-clad team, the Savanah Bananas don’t play your average baseball game. They bring a Harlem Globetrotter like flair to America’s favorite past time playing by Banana Ball rules, lots of crowd participation and often viral dance breaks shared on social media. They are a self-described “World Famous Baseball Circus.”

Rachel’s Mediterranean Grill, a Buffalo-based chain that has a dozen locations in Western New York, has opened its first location in Central New York.
Rachel’s is now open at 3514 W. Genesee St. in Camillus, across from the Fairmount Fair shopping plaza. It has been operating for several weeks but is hosting its “grand opening” today.
Rachel’s is a fast-casual chain specializing in Mediterranean-inspired bowls and wraps. Customers can choose their ingredients and watch as the item is built to order in the open kitchen.
The chain started ten years ago in the Buffalo suburb of Williamsville, and now has nine other locations in the Buffalo area and two in the Rochester area. There is also one in Fort Worth, Texas.
Another Rachel’s is listed as “coming soon” to Destiny USA in Syracuse. Rachel’s has also been looking at other locations in Central New York, including the former Friendly’s Restaurant at 3275 Erie Blvd. E. in DeWitt.
New Skyline Apartments owner has a message for remaining tenants: Get out (PS; Knauss)
A Chicago company plans to complete its acquisition of the notorious Skyline Apartments this week, a milestone for which city officials and tenant advocates have long wished.
Syracuse officials are excited about the prospects for new life at the 352-unit building on James Street. The Skyline grew infamous in recent years for drugs, filth and crime. A gruesome murder there went unnoticed for nearly three weeks.
But there’s a hurdle before the turnaround can begin.
The new owners will have to coax – or force – dozens of tenants to move out. So far, it’s not going smoothly.
Officials at Clear Investment Group, the company buying the property, say conditions at the Skyline are so bad that they need to empty the building before they can get rid of rampant bugs, mice and crime.
But roughly 100 tenants remained at the complex as of Friday, despite notices taped to their doors in April telling them to leave by July 1, said Amy Rubenstein, CEO.
“Nobody has permission to be in there. So anyone who doesn’t have an arrangement already with us, needs to be out. We’re shutting the building down,’’ she said.
But tenants – even those behind on the rent – have a right to be heard in court before they are evicted, under New York property law. That process usually takes at least six weeks, sometimes longer.
Some tenants are still trying to find new homes, said Sharon Sherman, executive director of the Greater Syracuse Tenants Network. She said she was not aware of any Skyline tenants who had been served with an eviction notice as of Tuesday.
Several Skyline tenants said Clear Investment Group representatives knocked on their doors last week and said they would be summoned to an eviction proceeding if they did not move out by mid-month.
