Welcome to National Mac and Cheese Day!
Mac and cheese, more formally known as macaroni and cheese, is one of the most beloved comfort foods. As is apparent from its name, it is made with macaroni—usually of the elbow-shaped variety—as well as with melted cheese. Other types of pasta can be used, and other ingredients are commonly added with the cheese. It can be made from scratch or out of a box, the latter variety being the first meal that many learn how to make.
Etruscans, Romans, Chinese, and Koreans may have all had a hand in the invention of mac and cheese. It likely was being eaten by the Early Middle Ages, although the first recipes didn't appear until centuries later. The first recipe may have appeared in an Italian cookbook titled Liber de Coquina (Book of Cooking) in the thirteenth century. The recipe, titled de lasanis, consisted of sheet pasta that was cut into two-inch squares, cooked in water, and tossed with grated cheese, which most likely was Parmesan. Mac and cheese gained popularity around Europe at this time. A mac and cheese recipe dating from 1769 that appeared in The Experienced English Housekeeper by Elizabeth Raffald is sometimes seen as being the first modern mac and cheese recipe.

Who is Syracuse recruiting in '25, '26 classes? Will SU offer more recruits? (PS; $; Waters)
From Thursday to Sunday last week, I went to the Nike EYBL Peach Jam and the adidas 3SSB championship to see the high school players that the Syracuse coaches were there to see.
After several days of stories on Syracuse.com, I put out a call for questions for this week’s Mailbox. And more than a few readers wanted to know even more about the two events and SU’s recruiting efforts.
I’ve answered a few below and saved a few more for another time.
For now, let’s get to those questions.
Q: How was the Peach Jam? Any talent in the upcoming classes?

Mike: The Peach Jam, and the adidas 3SSB Championship, too, was an incredible experience. Just wall-to-wall basketball with some of the top high school players in the country.
I saw games in four different locations that counted up to 16 courts. I lost track of how many games I watched, but I talked with at least a dozen potential Syracuse recruits.
As far as talent, there were so many outstanding prospects and in all age groups. I saw the Syracuse coaches at games involving players in the 2024 class, including SU commits Donnie Freeman and Elijah Moore. But I also caught the SU staff watching a game involving kids who just finished their eighth grade year.

Autry’s pitch to SU recruits: ‘He wants to bring Syracuse back’ (PS; $; Waters)
Adrian Autry grew up in Harlem. He played for high-powered programs at St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School and the Riverside Church Hawks before starring at Syracuse University.
In the months since Autry was introduced as Syracuse’s new head basketball coach, one recruit has reaffirmed his commitment to the Orange, another recruit in the 2024 announced his decision to play for Autry and four players have transferred into the SU program through the portal.
In getting those commitments, Autry has been selling recruits on the game he grew up playing: run and gun; fast and aggressive. It’s New York City-style basketball and a throwback to Autry’s years with the Orange.
“He wants to bring Syracuse back to where it was,’’ said Donnie Freeman, a 6-foot-9 forward from Washington D.C., and top-40 recruit nationally. “They had a couple down years the last two or three years, but they want to bring it to where it was.’’
Freeman is one of two players in the 2024 class to commit to Syracuse. The other is Elijah Moore, a 6-3 shooting guard from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx.

Syracuse completes 2023-24 non-conference schedule with game at Georgetown (PS; $; Waters)
Syracuse basketball’s 2023-24 non-conference schedule is complete with the official announcement of the Orange’s annual game against long-time rival Georgetown.
Syracuse will play the Hoyas in Washington D.C. at the Capital One Arena on Saturday, Dec. 9. Time of the game will be determined at a later date.
Syracuse and Georgetown, once rivals in the Big East, have faced each other 98 times with the Orange holding a 53-45 lead in the series.
Next year’s meeting with have a different flavor as both schools will have new head coaches. Adrian Autry, a former Syracuse player and assistant, will be in his first year as a head coach after taking over for Jim Boeheim, who retired following the 2022-23 season.

5-star SG has strong relationship with Syracuse basketball, may visit again (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball coaches have prioritized 2024 five-star guard Jalil Bethea in this cycle for quite a while now, and my fingers are crossed that the Orange’s consistent pursuit of him will pay off when he ultimately makes his college decision.
The ‘Cuse coaching staff offered a scholarship to the fast-rising, 6-foot-4 Bethea back in September of 2022 when Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim was still the Orange’s head coach. Bethea took an official visit to the Hill the following month. Last fall, Bethea was a top-100 national prospect in the rising-senior class, according to several recruiting services.
But his stock, in recent months, has skyrocketed perhaps more than any other player in the 2024 cycle. As a junior in the 2022-23 season for Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster, Pa., Bethea received All-America honors.
In grassroots basketball this spring and summer, he was one of the standouts for the 17U squad of the Philadelphia-based Team Final, which won the regular-season title on Nike’s EYBL circuit and reached the quarterfinals of last weekend’s Peach Jam.
All of this has led Jalil Bethea to vault inside the top 20 of the 2024 class, according to all of the primary recruiting services. ESPN now has him in the top 10. Both of the industry-generated rating systems, the 247Sports Composite and the On3 Industry Ranking, have Bethea as five stars these days.

When Boeheim was still at the helm of the ‘Cuse during 2022-23, the Orange coaching staff appeared to be making Bethea a priority in the 2024 cycle. However, once Adrian Autry took over the program in March, and Boeheim retired, I feel like Syracuse basketball further ramped up its recruiting of Bethea.
This spring and summer, according to media reports and comments from recruiting experts, Autry and his assistants have watched Bethea in person on many occasions. They checked Bethea out twice as he competed for Archbishop Wood during post-season play.

NCAA considers expanding Division I men’s basketball tournament field (PS; $; Ditota)
The NCAA men’s basketball committee, during its three days of meetings this week, discussed the possibility of expanding its annual post-season tournament field.
No decision on those conversations is imminent, an NCAA spokesman said.
Currently, 68 teams make the NCAA Tournament. College basketball coaches, including former Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, have advocated for an expanded field to accommodate the growing number of teams that participate in Division I men’s college basketball.
This week’s conversation among basketball committee members was a response to recommendations made in January by the Division I Transformation Committee, which was formed in 2021 to modernize college sports. The Transformation Committee recommended accommodating 25% of a sport’s membership with championship access for sports that have at least 200 participating schools.

Checking in on Syracuse basketball alumni in NBA Summer League (orangefizz.net; Aitken)
The past month has treated the Syracuse basketball alumni with veteran status in the NBA very well. Jerami Grant inked a $160 million deal with the Trail Blazers, while Oshae Brissett signed with the Celtics.
It isn’t just free agency season, though. It’s also time for the NBA Summer League, which is over halfway done already. So how are the younger former SU players faring?
Buddy Boeheim – Pistons
Buddy Boeheim has received limited minutes with the Pistons summer squad, but he’s certainly made the most of that time. Through three games, he’s shot over 60% on three-pointers and led Detroit in triples twice.
Clearly, Boeheim can produce as a spot-up shooter. He flashed that ability throughout the last season with the Motor City Cruise of the G-League. The issue is a lack of opportunity, and not just low minutes. Last weekend, the Pistons renounced their rights to Boeheim. While he’ll continue to play for them in summer ball, the Syracuse grad needs to find a new home for next season.
Boeheim’s shooting prowess could result in some two-way offers, which would put him in a limbo between the G-League and NBA like last season. However, defensive liabilities put a ceiling on how far Boeheim can climb up the ladder.

Martin Sexton to play hometown concert at new Syracuse venue (PS; $; Herbert)
Syracuse native Martin Sexton is coming home for a concert at a new local venue.
The soulful singer-songwriter will perform Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Middle Ages Beer Hall on the city’s Near West Side. Doors open at 7 p.m., music begins at 8.
Tickets are on sale for $39.50 through TicketWeb; additional fees may apply. Remaining tickets will be available for $45 on the day of the show.
Attendees must be 21 or older.
Middle Ages Beer Hall is a new 8,000 square-foot music and events space that opened this spring on the second floor at 120 Wilkinson Street, directly above the Middle Ages Brewing Co. The Syracuse brewery opened in 1995.
Sexton is promoting his latest EP, “2020 Vision,” produced by three-time Grammy nominee John Alagia and featuring a collaboration with John Mayer. He has released more than a dozen albums over his career, been featured on TV shows like “Scrubs” and “Parenthood,” and has famous fans like actress Kristen Bell and news anchor Brian Williams.

Cicero rejected $100 million housing proposal as too big. Now it’s back with new wrinkles (PS; Doran)
After town officials blocked a $100 million housing project in a busy area late last year, the proposal is back with fewer rentals and more businesses.
The Metro North proposal initially called for 400 residential units. That dropped to 278. But opponents said the new, large housing development on a busy stretch of Route 11 was too dense and would cause more traffic. Neighbors who live around the parcel spoke out against it at board meetings, citing traffic congestion, too many apartments and decreased property values.
Now Metro North is back with less housing, just 220 units, including some senior living. Those would be built alongside a 110-room hotel and other retail and business spaces, according to an initial concept reviewed by town officials.
It’s a plan that the town’s planning board chair says could create even more traffic at certain times of day along Brewerton Road. But a new traffic study will be done as part of this proposal, said Mark Marzullo, chairman of the town’s planning board.
