Milk chocolate is the most popular kind of chocolate in many countries. Most of it is sold in the United States and Europe, but markets in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and parts of Asia have been ascendant in recent years. Although dark chocolate is now touted for its health benefits, the same was done for milk chocolate as well, especially for children, during its early years. Milk chocolate was first made in 1875 when Daniel Peter, a Swiss chocolatier, added his chocolate to the newly-discovered sweetened condensed milk of Henri Nestlé. It soon became popular in America and Europe.

Which SU basketball player, other than Boeheim, had greatest coaching career? (Mike’s mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)
Generally, Mike’s Mailbox is really busy during the basketball season. But I get some of my most interesting questions in the off-season.
That’s true of the first question in this week’s Mailbox. It really had me scouring some old media guides for information on former Syracuse basketball players who went onto become head coaches.
Q: Kevin King just retired as the boys basketball coach at Westhill High School. That got me thinking. Which former Syracuse basketball player, with the exception of Jim Boeheim, had the best coaching career at any level?

Mike: This is a real thought-provoking question. First of all, let’s give a nod to Kevin King.
King played at Syracuse from 1973 to 1976. As a junior in 1975, he averaged 7.1 points off the bench for the first team in Syracuse history to advance to the Final Four. He had 12 points in SU’s upset of North Carolina in the East Region semifinals.

Maui Invitational Schedule Released: Syracuse Faces a Gauntlet (orangefizz.net; Aitken)
Even before the bracket for the 2023 Maui Invitational was released earlier this week, it was clear that it would be a challenging tournament for Syracuse.
Five of the eight teams in the bracket were in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top-10: #1 Kansas, #3 Purdue, #6 Tennessee, #8 Gonzaga, and #10 Marqutte. In addition, UCLA reached the Sweet 16 last season. The only other team is Chaminade, the host school.
Now, the bracket is set, and the Orange were dealt a rough hand. SU faces Tennessee in round one, which is followed by either Gonzaga or Purdue in round two. That means Syracuse will almost definitely face two ranked teams in the first two rounds. SU can’t even play Chaminade, the easiest opponent, until the last round.
Historically, this is bad news. Syracuse won the Maui Invitational back in 2013. Since then, the Orange are 4-8 against Power Six teams (Big East included) during in-season tournaments. SU’s only ranked wins in that span came all the way back in 2015.
Getting beat up on early in the season could be rough for the confidence of a younger team that hasn’t worked together much.

The Syracuse alumni team turned it on from that point, tying the game at the end of the first quarter before dominating the second and third quarters as it pulled away from Team Gibson. Boeheim’s Army would win 99-83 in a game that was not even that close. In round two, BA faces The Nerd Team, who eliminated them in 2022. Behind a 17-1 second quarter run, Boeheim’s Army took a double digit lead to halftime, and kept The Nerd Team at arm’s length the rest of the way as it won by eight.

Grant Riller makes most of his noise with the way he scores on the basketball court.
In two games, the Boeheim’s Army guard has scored 47 points on 19-of-30 shooting. That’s 63%. He’s made all seven of the free throws he’s attempted.
On Wednesday, he drove the ball, was fouled and drained the first free throw to reach the Elam Ending target score of 83 in The Basketball Tournament. Boeheim’s Army defeated The Nerd Team 83-75 to settle a 2022 score and set up the most anticipated game of the Syracuse Regional.
No. 2 Boeheim’s Army meets No. 1 and defending champion Blue Collar U at 9 p.m. on Friday at the War Memorial. Right now, the game is scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+. (That might change.)
Riller’s scoring savvy provided plenty of Boeheim’s Army fireworks.
“That’s just how my game is,” said Riller, who tallied 27 on Wednesday. “Growing up, I was always a kind of aggressive player, the guy that looks to create not only for myself but for my teammates as well. Now I’m just playing for a group of guys that lets you be yourself, gives you free range to be aggressive. I feel the confidence to be myself and that’s what I’m doing.”

Quick guards and sharp-shooting wings seem to dominate The Basketball Tournament.
The summer event, which awards $1 million to the winning team, puts the emphasis on perimeter play, 3-point shooting and penetrators.
There are times, though, when it pays to have a big guy.
Rakeem Christmas is 6 feet, 9 inches and 250 pounds of solid granite. He’s so ripped that his muscles have muscles.
“He’s huge,’’ Chris McCullough said.
Christmas, the former Syracuse University center, is literally the Rak upon which this year’s edition of Boeheim’s Army is built.
Boeheim’s Army leaned heavily on its big guy during an 83-75 win over The Nerd Team in the second round of the TBT at the War Memorial on Wednesday night.
Christmas, a four-year starter at Syracuse from 2011-15, scored eight points, hauled in seven rebounds and blocked two shots in 20 minutes of action. This came after Christmas had 11 points in just 10 minutes during the Monday’s blowout 99-83 victory over Team Gibson.

What will Colorado’s move mean for the ACC? (TNIAAM; Wall)
There’s a lot of uneasiness among Syracuse Orange fans when it comes to conference realignment. With this news dropping fast, what will it mean for the ACC?
It’s clear that this move will mean another school(s?) will be added to the Big 12 to get them to 14 or 16. Will it be the rumored Utah/Arizona/Arizona State trio? Is Brett Yormark going to try and establish a footprint in the NYC market by adding UConn?
To me, Colorado making a solo move makes it seem as though they were not working with any other PAC schools, as these are usually coordinated moves. Maybe the other schools just tried to be quieter about their plans, but it seems odd to have Colorado out front like this when most of these moves are coordinated.
I also don’t think the BIG or SEC will feel the need to respond to this by expanding now. ESPN and FOX are not going to pay those leagues enough money to justify adding anyone that they don’t have, despite what Florida State and Clemson fans might want. Both those leagues seem to be comfortable waiting for the current media landscape to settle a bit more.
UConn fans are torn about leaving the Big East, but with an athletic department bleeding money, a jump would make financial sense. This seems like it will be the direction the Big 12 heads for now as they add a major basketball brand, get some access to the NY media market, and take away a potential ACC option.

Celebrating Otto the Orange (Photo Story) (syr.edu; photo gallery; Weber)
Fans of Otto the Orange are super excited for Otto’s upcoming induction into the Class of 2023 Mascot Hall of Fame (MHOF) Saturday, Aug. 12, in Whitting, Indiana. They will be one of only two mascots inducted this year.
The ceremony, during which Otto will receive an official ring, will be at noon but the festivities will be all day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local vendors, sports memorabilia, artisans, food trucks and more will line the outside of the MHOF for a fun-filled day of shopping, snacking and entertainment! Tickets to the event cost $10 and can be purchased on the MHOF website.
Friends of Otto the Orange were so thrilled about the honor they helped get the celebration started early by sharing their favorite photos with Otto!

Dinner at Tavern on the Lock, Fulton, N.Y.
Inventive flavors but spotty service at Fulton’s Tavern on the Lock (Dining Out Review) (PS; $; Paventi)
Our waitress at the Tavern on the Lock in Fulton warned us that the Chicken Edwardo was “very spicy.” My curiosity was piqued; after all, one person’s spicy is another person’s mayonnaise, and vice versa.
Chicken Edwardo ($18.99) was a simple blend of sauteed chicken, bell peppers and mushrooms tossed with penne pasta in a cajun-seasoned butter and white wine sauce. Tender chicken paired well with just-cooked vegetables and al dente pasta. It was, however, about as spicy as a loaf of Wonder bread, which was a minor letdown though the dish performed well in the butter, wine and garlic sauce. A pair of housemade breadsticks helped sop up some of the buttery goodness from the bowl.
It wasn’t the first time our waitress misfired, but more on that later.
I was hoping to sink my fork into the dish that brought me to the riverside restaurant. Subscribers to the Where Syracuse Eats newsletter were treated to a photo of the captain’s platter — sliced delmonico steak over lobster risotto with cheesy mussels — from head chef Edwin Delgado in last week’s edition. It was all the evidence needed to rearrange our schedule of reviews and head to Oswego county.
Our view from the deck provided a direct view of Oswego Canal Lock No. 3 and the fast-moving waters of the river. Owners Donald and Susan Ryan opened the restaurant in 2008, using the large windows in the bar, dining room and sunroom to provide a view of the waterway and the Oneida Street bridge.

Green Lakes State Park gets a $3M makeover: New playground, cabins, bath house (PS; Cobb)
Green Lakes State Park recently got a $3 million a makeover, including a new playground, bath house and upgraded cabins to house its “Ladders to the Outdoors” program participants.
The new playground is an addition to the smaller play area that borders the public beach at the park. The playground includes four new slides, a children’s climbing wall, and a swing set. The new play area also has soft playground flooring rather than sand or wood chips in consideration of child safety.
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, New York Assemblymember Al Stirpe said all the pipes in the original bathhouse were replaced due to leaking. The new $2 million bathhouse at the beach’s entrance includes a lactation room, single gender and all-gender restrooms.
The improvements also include a new cabin near the park entrance, and a refurbished cabin that are now part of the Ladders to Outdoors program. The community outreach program gives youth organizations and schools a chance to teach children more about nature and life outdoors.
“It’s so gratifying to see people who normally can’t just walk out their door or ride their bike to the park to be able to get the opportunity to come here and enjoy all this stuff that Green Lakes has to offer,” Stirpe said.
