Welcome to National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!

Today we celebrate ice cream sandwiches in all their forms and flavors! They first appeared in the late 1890s in New York City, being sold by street vendors for a penny. They consisted of a thin quarter-inch layer of ice cream between two thin graham wafers. Shortly thereafter, by at least 1905, they were being sold on the beaches of Atlantic City for the same price.

There are many ice cream sandwich variations in the United States and around the world. The most common is made of a vanilla ice cream slab between two thin chocolate cookie layers that resemble a chocolate cake. The "It's It" ice cream sandwich originated in San Francisco in 1928 at the Playland-at-the-Beach amusement park, being invented by owner George Whitney. It consists of vanilla ice cream between two oatmeal cookies, which are covered with chocolate and frozen. They are still being sold today. Chipwich sandwiches made with chocolate chip cookies were popular in the 1980s, and after a handful of years of being out of production, they
returned in 2018.

A five-star prospect in the 2026 class who hails from the Washington, D.C., area said in a recent interview that Syracuse basketball is on his radar.

That player is 6-foot-6 Adam Oumiddoch, a shooting guard/small forward who hails from Springfield, Va. Oumiddoch, a rising sophomore, had a solid freshman campaign in the 2022-23 season for Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, Va.

In mid-July, word came out that Oumiddoch would transfer from Bishop O’Connell to the Atlanta-based Overtime Elite.

This spring and summer, he was a star for the 15U group of the Baltimore-based Team Melo in Nike’s EYBL league, receiving a lot of high praise from national analysts and scouts for his performances over the past few months.

Adam Oumiddoch, a 2026 five-star wing, appears to have an interest in Syracuse basketball.

It’s still really early in his recruitment, but already, Oumiddoch holds scholarship offers from teams such as Mike Hopkins-led Washington, Maryland, Providence, Memphis, Illinois, Bryant and Old Dominion, according to recruiting services and his Twitter page.

In a recent interview with scouting service Pro Insight, Oumiddoch said that besides those schools that have offered him, several other college squads are on his radar, including the Orange, Michigan State, George Washington and Washington State. He says that UCLA was his dream school growing up.

Boeheim’s Army will be back in 2024: Organizers want younger former SU players involved (PS; $; Ditota)

Boeheim’s Army plans to be back in TBT next summer.

The team’s general manager and head coach said so on Monday.

Boeheim’s Army advanced out of The Basketball Tournament‘s Syracuse regional last week, defeating defending champion Blue Collar U on Friday night. But the Army’s quest for $1 million ended Sunday in a sparsely populated gym in Wheeling, West Virginia.

Boeheim’s Army lost to Herd That 88-71 on Sunday afternoon. A huge Herd That third quarter sealed the deal.

“Would love to get some new Orange faces on the team that fans haven’t seen, like Elijah Hughes and Tyus Battle. Some of these younger guys that are fresh out of school,” GM Shaun Belbey said. “But we’ll see. We might have a whole new roster next year; we might have the same roster. Just depends on the guys’ summer schedules.”

CNY school district has deal pending to buy former school, parish from Catholic Diocese (PS; Doran)

An Onondaga County school district has a deal pending to buy the closed St. Charles-St. Ann’s parish and St. Ann’s School on Onondaga Boulevard on the western edge of Syracuse, officials confirm.

The sale of the property at 4461 and 4471 Onondaga Boulevard to the Westhill school district hasn’t closed yet. That’s expected to occur this fall, Westhill School Superintendent Stephen Dunham said.

The property consists of 18.2 acres, and includes the former convent, rectory, parish and school. All are closed.

Westhill school district residents authorized the sale by approving a proposition on May 16 to purchase it for $2.75 million.

The purchase is being financed over 30 years. The district plans to use $750,000 from its fund balance, along with bonds and tax revenues.
