National Lighthouse Day celebrates lighthouses and the commitment and service of those who tend to them. On April 28, 1988, Senator John H. Chafee [R-RI] introduced a resolution that would designate August 7, 1989, as National Lighthouse Day. It was cosponsored in the House of Representatives by William J. Hughes [D-NJ]—who had introduced his own version of the resolution in the House. Senate Joint Resolution 306 was adopted in the Senate and House and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on November 5, 1988, becoming Public Law 100-622. On June 19, 1989, President George H.W. Bush issued Presidential Proclamation 5993. It reads as follows:

Syracuse Basketball: ‘Cuse prioritizing 4-star D.C. guard, wants him to visit (itlh; Adler)
Derek Dixon, a 2025 four-star combo guard from Washington, D.C., has said in a couple of recent interviews that Syracuse basketball is among the schools he’s hearing from the most these days.
The 6-foot-4 Dixon, a top-100 national prospect in his class per several recruiting services, received a scholarship offer from the Orange coaching staff on June 15, which is when the contact period opened up for the 2025 cycle, permitting college coaches to begin initiating direct communication with rising high-school juniors.
Additionally, Dixon has said that he’s interested in taking a visit to the ‘Cuse at some point. Some recent media reports of late have also indicated that Syracuse basketball coaches would like to get him on the SU campus for a visit.
In a recent tweet from recruiting analyst Jake Lieberman, Dixon said that the schools he hears from the most include the Orange, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Providence and Virginia.

Syracuse basketball 4-star west coast target can reach 5 stars, expert says (itlh; Adler)
Maximo Adams, a four-star small forward in the 2026 class who received a Syracuse basketball scholarship offer this past February, continues to see his offer sheet grow, and a recruiting expert says the 6-foot-6, west coast product can make a run at five-star status in this cycle.
Adams, in early July, put together some strong performances for the 15U squad of the Los Angeles-based Team Why Not, as Nike’s EYBL league conducted its annual Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C.
A portion of Peach Jam occurred during an NCAA live period where college coaches, national analysts, scouts and others could watch high-school prospects compete in person. Over four games at Peach Jam, Adams averaged 17.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest, while connecting on 57.8 percent from the field.
Across the entire 15U division at Peach Jam, Adams’ 17.3 points per encounter put him in a tie for No. 7 overall, which is stellar. Top analyst Eric Bossi, the national basketball director for 247Sports, said in part that Adams “has a great looking shot, length, skill and some bounce in traffic.”

Georgetown alums get the best of former SU players in rivalry’s renewal (PS; $; Waters)
Don’t be fooled into thinking Sunday’s game between the Orange 8 and DawGTalk was just a fun, summer-time event for the basketball-playing alums of Syracuse and Georgetown.
The two teams traded trash talk along with some hard fouls, and when the ex-Hoyas prevailed 130-119, the loss still left a bitter taste in the mouths of the former Orange.
“It still hurts even if it’s just an alumni game,’’ former Syracuse forward Jimmy Boeheim said.
The Georgetown players took special pleasure in beating their orange-clad rivals in Syracuse, even if the gym was on the campus of Onondaga Community College and not in the Dome.
“Any win for us against Syracuse, we’re going to take it,’’ said Chris Wright, the former Georgetown guard who served as DawGTalk’s general manager.
The game was one of several one-off contests between teams of college rivals put on by the Alumni Basketball League over the last few years. The players received $2,000 each for playing. The Georgetown players earned an additional $850 apiece for the win.

Former Syracuse Player Cole Swider Signs With Heat (orangefizz.net; podcast; Gotkin)
After appearing in just seven games for the Los Angeles Lakers in his rookie season, former SU Small Forward Cole Swider has found a new home in the NBA. Swider has signed with the Miami Heatf. While the details are unknown, Swider could flourish in South Beach.
Swider absolutely dominated the NBA Summer League this year, averaging 15.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. Swider shot 46% from the field, 45% from three and 93% from the free throw line. Something that is no surprise to SU fans after his impressive 2021-22 season with the Orange.
In his seven NBA games last year, Swider averaged under six minutes and under two points per game. In that small sample size, Swider shot 33% from the field. Expect him to play much better though under Eric Spoelstra in Miami. The Heat have been known for developing second round. and undrafted players in recent years. Five members of the Heats rotation in the 2023 NBA playoffs were undrafted players- Caleb Martin, Gabe Vincent, Max Strus, Duncan Robinson, and Haywood Highsmith. Two other players on the Heats roster weren’t selected in Udonis Haslem and Omer Yurtseven.
Swider could be a similar player to Duncan Robinson who lost his starting job and dealt with injuries last year. At his peak, Robinson was a lockdown shooter, shooting close to 45% from three in the 2019-20 NBA season. Last year, he shot just 37% from deep.

Def Leppard leads hectic hair metal reunion at JMA Dome, but Crue steals the show (PS; McCarthy)
Leather and lasers enjoyed a revival as three rock legends competed for the hardest rocking performance Saturday night at the JMA Wireless Dome – and the clear winner was the audience.
Alice Cooper kicked off the marathon show at 5:45 p.m., showcasing hits like “Eighteen,” “Feed My Frankenstein,” and “Billion Dollar Babies.” The eclectic singer, renowned for his bizarre onstage antics, capped off his set with a stellar rendition of his mega-hit “School’s Out,” and surprised fans by incorporating Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. II.” Ever the dark horse, Cooper finished by tossing his tophat into the ring of the presidential race with an over the top performance of “Elected.”
At 7:16 p.m., the notorious, leather-clad bad boys of Mötley Crüe surged onstage with “Wild Side,” which rocked the Dome to its core. The Crüe was the true highlight of the night – the band played like their rent was overdue. Ripping through hits like “Shout at the Devil,” Live Wire,” and “Dr. Feelgood,” the band featured short teasers of other classic hits like Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” and a Jimi Hendrix-inspired “Star Spangled Banner.”

Italian restaurant in Syracuse known for its huge portions and Friday fish fry to close after 70 years (PS; Miller)
An Italian restaurant in the city’s Valley neighborhood will shut down after 70 years in the business.
Luigi’s Restaurant, known for its oversized plates of pasta and Friday night fish dinners, will permanently close the doors at 1524 Valley Drive on Sunday, Aug. 27.
“We would like to thank our loyal customers and family being able to serve you for 70 years,” the Savastino family said in a note to customers. “We also want to thank our manager and current employees for their continued commitment with us as we close our doors.”
Luigi’s has been known for its generous helpings at a reasonable price since Louis “Luigi” Savastino opened up shop in 1954. Savastino moved to Florida several years ago but maintained ownership. He died in October at 91. Merv White had taken over the day-to-day operation in 2019.
