Welcome to National Lumberjack Day!

Lumberjack Day celebrates the archetypal woodsman, the lumberjack. The day was created in 2005 by Marianne Ways and Colleen AF Venable as an excuse to eat pancakes and waffles with friends, and because International Talk Like a Pirate Day comes a week before it, and they wanted to celebrate a different character. Marianne thought it would be better to have a day to talk like a lumberjack as well. It has grown to be celebrated all around the country, with people getting dressed up in plaid shirts and wearing beards, and even having lumberjack parties. In 2013, the day also started being called National Pancake Day, which increased its popularity.

Syracuse begins 2023-24 basketball practice under new head coach Adrian Autry (PS; $; Ditota)

Syracuse University officially kicked off its men’s basketball practice Monday afternoon in the Melo Center.

It was, in one big way, a little bit weird.

Jim Boeheim, after 47 years as SU’s head coach, has retired to the front office, so to speak. Adrian Autry, his longtime assistant/associate head coach and former player, is the new head man.

On October 27, Autry will be introduced as such to the JMA Wireless Dome crowd when Syracuse plays the first of two of its exhibition games, the first one against Daemen. On November 6, SU officially opens its 2023-24 season at home against New Hampshire.

Syracuse players have worked out during summer and early fall sessions, but today marks the first day the NCAA allows teams to hold a full official practice.

Here’s the roster. (Yes, Chaz Owens is back.):

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star commit Donnie Freeman to officially visit again (itlh; Adler)

This coming weekend, Syracuse basketball 2024 four-star commit Donnie Freeman will take a second official visit to the Hill, according to a post on X from Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters.

The 6-foot-9 power forward from Washington, D.C., will make a trip to the ‘Cuse campus as Syracuse football (4-0) hosts Clemson (2-2) in an Atlantic Coast Conference showdown beginning at noon this coming Saturday from the JMA Wireless Dome.

Donnie Freeman took an official visit to Syracuse basketball in early April. The following month, he verbally committed to the Orange over other finalists Alabama, Iowa, Texas and Georgia Tech.

The other member of the ‘Cuse 2024 class, at this juncture, is New York City four-star shooting guard Elijah Moore, who verbally pledged to the team in late January. Currently, the Orange’s 2024 cycle hovers around the top 10 across the country.

Commit Donnie Freeman, a four-star power forward, is making another official visit to Syracuse basketball.

In August of 2021, after he took an unofficial visit to Central New York to compete in the Orange’s annual Elite Camp, Freeman picked up a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse coaching staff. I believe Freeman was the first 2024 player to land an Orange offer.

Syracuse basketball will have three elite recruits on campus this weekend for official visits. They include 2024 forward commit Donnie Freeman, 2025 guard Derek Dixon and 2025 forward Matthew Gilhool. All three will be in attendance for Saturday's football game against Clemson.

Donnie Freeman: Freeman, a class of 2024 forward, committed to Syracuse in May. He is a top 30 overall player in the class and top five at his position. He picked the Orange over offers from Alabama, Iowa, Texas, Maryland, Marquette, Xavier, Virginia Tech and many others. From the Washington (DC) area, Freeman transferred high schools this past offseason and will spend his senior year at IMG Academy in Florida.

Derek Dixon: Dixon is a four star guard ranked as a top 100 prospect in the 2025 class. He is an AAU teammate of Donnie Freeman as both played for Team Takeover this past summer. Pittsburgh, Providence, Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Villanova are among those recruiting him the hardest currently. He was offered by Syracuse in June.

Matthew Gilhool: A class of 2025 forward who reclassified from 2024 over the summer, Gilhool participated in Syracuse's Elite Camp in August and earned an offer as a result of his performance. He is considered a top 100 prospect and is listed at 6-10 as a versatile power forward with a lot of skill. Schools like Maryland, Miami, Mississippi State, Penn State, Rutgers and Virginia Tech are among those who have offered in addition to the Orange.

Syracuse basketball 4-star big man target makes big move in new rankings (itlh; Adler)

New Syracuse basketball 2025 four-star recruit Matthew Gilhool jumped into the top 70 around the country in recently updated national rankings from 247Sports.

The 6-foot-11 power forward/center from the Philadelphia area, a highly skilled and versatile big man, received a scholarship offer from the Orange late last month around the time that he took an unofficial visit to the Hill to compete in the team’s annual Elite Camp.

Gilhool is one of at least six prospects across the 2025 and 2026 classes who played in the camp and then landed ‘Cuse scholarship offers.

— Ari Rosenfeld (@ARosenfeldHoops) September 20, 2023

The fast-rising Gilhool, per 247Sports, currently checks in at No. 69 overall, No. 15 at power forward and No. 3 in Pennsylvania within the junior recruiting cycle.

Syracuse basketball faces growing competition for 2025 four-star big man Matthew Gilhool.

Gilhool attends the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia. He transferred there from Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, N.Y., after also previously suiting up at the Westtown School in West Chester, Pa.

Media reports in mid-July stated that Gilhool would reclassify from the 2024 to the 2025 cycle. He had a breakout AAU season this spring and summer while playing for the Philadelphia-based Philly Pride in the Under Armour Association league.

Lakeside village in Central NY listed among most charming small towns in US (PS; House)

For a small village, Skaneateles has plenty of big fans.

Skaneateles Lake and the postcard-perfect village filled with shops and eateries on its northern shore has hosted many visiting politicians, from former President Bill Clinton and his family — who spent several vacations in a palatial East Lake Road home — to President Joe Biden, who dined at Rosaline’s Cucina when he was vice president.

Celebrities have also fallen in love with Skaneateles. That includes celebrity interior designer Thom Filicia, a Syracuse native who adores the village so much that he opted to exchange his lakeside house for a federal-style residential building in the heart of Skaneateles.

Now, Skaneateles has another high-profile admirer.

Skaneateles has been named one of the 50 most charming small towns in America by HGTV. The lakeside village represented New York on the list, which includes one community from every state.

Spectrum News eliminating Syracuse morning show, will air same show across Upstate NY (PS; Herbert)

Spectrum News is eliminating its morning TV shows in Syracuse and Rochester/Buffalo, the network announced Friday.

Maureen Huff, vice president of public relations for Spectrum networks, told the Times Union that Spectrum News will replace those shows with its “Your Morning” show, hosted by Albany-based anchors Julie Chapman and Dan Bazile since 2018.

“As part of an effort to provide a cohesive news experience for our viewers in upstate New York, Spectrum News 1 will now feature one networked morning show that integrates stories from all of our upstate markets into a single newscast, complemented by hyperlocal headlines and weather,” Huff told the Albany newspaper. “This shift mirrors our other dayparts and will provide viewers a consistent approach to their news from morning to night with even more news from across the entire upstate region.”
