National Pistachio Day is for enjoying pistachios and creates awareness about the health benefits pistachios provide. Early look at ACC tournament bracket: Syracuse's seed, opponent (PS; $; Waters)
In just two weeks from Tuesday, the ACC tournament will begin with three opening round games at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Most of the conference’s teams have only four regular-season games remaining. Some, like Syracuse, are down to just three games left on the schedule.
In that short amount of time, there is going to be a lot of sorting out of tournament seeds, byes and matchups.
Syracuse, which is 18-10 overall and 9-8 in the conference, is currently alone in eighth place in the league’s standings. A No. 8 seed would mean the Orange would get a first-round bye and face the No. 9 seed in a noon game on Wednesday, March 13.
As of Monday morning, the No. 9 seed would go to Florida State. The Seminoles have an 8-8 league record, following their 74-63 loss at Clemson on Saturday.
Really, though, very little is determined at this point. Syracuse could conceivably finish as high as fourth and as low as 11th.
Syracuse is part of a five-team cluster separated by just one game in the ACC standings. Clemson, Pittsburgh and North Carolina State each have 9-7 records, then comes Syracuse at 9-8 followed by Florida State at 8-8.
A look at the ACC schedule over the next two weeks shows several critical games between the teams battling it out in the middle of the conference standings, dreaming of a potential double-bye, dreading the possibility of falling into the first round and hoping to earn as high a seed as possible.
On Tuesday, Syracuse will host Virginia Tech, which sits right behind the aforemention five teams with a 7-9 record. The Hokies lost a key game at Pittsburgh on Saturday. But the Hokies are still in the hunt for a bye. After Tuesday’s game at Syracuse, Virginia Tech closes with home games against Wake Forest and Notre Dame plus a road trip to Louisville.

Syracuse Basketball: Here’s how ‘Cuse has a realistic path to NCAA Tournament invite (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse basketball is coming down the final stretch of its 2023-24 regular season, with the ACC Tournament then taking place next month in our nation’s capital.
After that, hopefully, the Orange will find itself in the running for an invite to this spring’s NCAA Tournament after a two-year absence from the annual March Madness event.
At this juncture in 2023-24, the ‘Cuse still has work to do before it can feel anything close to comfortable about hearing its name called on Selection Sunday.
Bracketologists, by and large, do not have the Orange super close to the proverbial bubble. The team’s NCAA NET ranking isn’t great. The ‘Cuse needs more coveted quadrant-one victories.
Head coach Adrian Autry has said that SU deserves to be included in the conversation for the upcoming NCAA Tournament, citing that his team has some quality wins at home and on the road.
Syracuse basketball does have a path to get to the Big Dance.
On Saturday, during the ESPN broadcast of the Orange’s nail-biting triumph against Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome, Hall of Famer and former long-time ‘Cuse head coach Jim Boeheim called the NET rankings “ridiculous.”
He then went on to say that if Syracuse basketball can get to at least 20 wins, the Orange has a “shot” at reaching March Madness. I agree with both of those statements from Boeheim, whose legendary career was celebrated over the weekend by SU Athletics.
When I wrote this column on Sunday, the ‘Cuse (18-10, 9-8 in the ACC) sat alone in the No. 8 spot of the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The Orange, which went 9-2 during its non-conference docket, has won two straight and gone 4-2 over its last six league affairs.
Here is the remainder of the 2023-24 regular season calendar for the ‘Cuse:
Virginia Tech at the Dome on February 27
NET Ranking: No. 57
Quadrant: 2
At Louisville on March 2

Currently, Syracuse basketball has two quadrant-one successes, at home versus North Carolina and at Pittsburgh. If N.C. State creeps into the top 75 of the NET, the Orange’s road win over the Wolfpack would transform into a quadrant-one victory.
Simultaneously, if Oregon moves into the NET’s top 50, the Syracuse basketball win over the Ducks last December at a neutral site would become a quadrant-one triumph. This could potentially give the ‘Cuse four quadrant-one wins.
The Orange’s current post-season resume isn’t great, but it’s not awful, either.
Syracuse basketball has that home stunner over top-10 North Carolina. The ‘Cuse has swept both Pittsburgh and N.C. State, two solid ACC groups.
Oregon was minus a few key players, but Syracuse basketball defeating the Ducks on a neutral floor was still a good result.
The Orange has beaten Colgate, and the Raiders are in first place within the Patriot League. The ‘Cuse defeated LSU on the Hill, and while the Tigers aren’t overly impressive this season, LSU did recently knock off top-20 Kentucky.

Syracuse Basketball Escapes Notre Dame on Jim Boeheim Day: 3 Takeaways (cbbreview; O'Sullivan)
Syracuse basketball took down Notre Dame, 88-85 at the Dome on Saturday, holding onto what was, at one point, a 29-point lead.
Spirits were high at the JMA Wireless Dome as thousands gathered for Jim Boeheim Day, a day dedicated to the career of one of college basketball’s winningest coaches. Mike Tirico returned to his alma mater to serve as the master of ceremonies, and tribute videos from college basketball personalities including Mike Krzyzewski, Rick Pitino, and Roy Williams played on the jumbotron during stoppages.
On the court, Syracuse basketball saw all five of their starters score in double digits. Sophomore Judah Mintz led the way with 21 points, his highest total in three games. Notre Dame’s Markus Burton had a stellar afternoon, dropping 28 points on 50% shooting and adding 8 assists.
The Orange were able to pick up an ACC win to honor their former head coach and improve to 9-8 in conference play.
Takeaway #1: “Cardiac ‘Cuse” Was In Full Effect
Only fitting for an exciting finish on Jim Boeheim Day, right?Syracuse is a team of runs, this we know. The first-half showing was tremendous, all five starters getting involved and shooting at a 60.6% clip en route to a 49-point effort. Notre Dame could only muster 29 points, unable to find a groove early on against a stout Orange defense. With just over two minutes until halftime, Syracuse led by 29.
That’s why a three-point victory is so unsettling, continuing the team’s most disappointing trend.
Head coach Adrian Autry has preached all season that this team needs to be able to prolong a strong performance for an entire 40 minutes. Against Niagara, Syracuse allowed a 19-point lead to get cut to single digits. Against Duke, the Orange let a 2-point halftime deficit turn into a 20-point defeat.
When this team is clicking, they are one of the best teams in the ACC. Sophomore Chris Bell has really come into his own in these past six games, shooting with a newfound confidence that has cemented him as one of the best 3-point shooters in the conference. Mintz and JJ Starling are elite finishers around the rim, and Starling has found his stroke in the second half of the season. Maliq Brown continues to show up in a big way, stuffing the stat sheet while Syracuse tries to remedy their center position.
The biggest hurdle for this team is consistency. If they can finish the remainder of their games as strong as they start them, they will be a nightmare matchup in the ACC Tournament.

ACC Power Rankings: Syracuse basketball returns to the top half of the league (PS; $; Carlson)
The ACC has found itself at the center of conversation in the college basketball world again and not for the way it would like.
Wake Forest’s win over Duke on Saturday was enormous for the Demon Deacons, plugging the one hole in Wake’s NCAA Tournament resume.
Amid all that excitement Wake Forest students stormed the court and, unfortunately, an injury to Duke star Kyle Filipowski in the process. Filipowski hurt his knee. The severity is unclear.
Court storming is exciting and fun for students and for the winning team. But that excitement shouldn’t come at the expense of risking an actual physical injury.
Syracuse and the JMA Wireless Dome staff did a nice job of managing the court storm when the Orange beat North Carolina earlier this year but incidents like this do have to make you wonder if the fun is worth the risk.
Just something to think about before we get back to the fun discussion of where Syracuse should rank in the ACC. I think most Orange fans will be pleased with the answer.
1. North Carolina

Last week’s results: Win 84-55 at Miami; Loss 83-79 at Wake Forest
This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. Louisville; Saturday vs. Virginia
Why No. 2? The Blue Devils ran into a bad situation at Wake Forest with a very good team in need of a win to solidify its NCAA Tournament hopes. Let’s hope Kyle Filipowski wasn’t badly injured in the court-storming. The Blue Devils would drop a spot or two without their most important player.
3. Wake Forest
Record: 18-9 (10-6)Last week’s ranking: 7
Last week’s results: Win 91-58 vs. Pittsburgh; Win 83-79 vs. Duke
This week’s schedule: Tuesday at Notre Dame; Saturday at Virginia Tech
Why No. 3? Hunter Sallis scored 29 points while missing just two shots against Duke. He has not been held in single-digits the entire season. He’s been tremendous this season and gave the Demon Deacons the big win it needed to round out its NCAA Tournament resume.
4. Clemson
Record: 19-8 (9-7)Last week’s ranking: 6
Last week’s results: Win 81-57 at Georgia Tech; Win 74-63 vs. Florida State
This week’s schedule: Tuesday vs. Pittsburgh; Saturday at Notre Dame
Why No. 4? Former Syracuse standout Joe Girard III had 24 points against the Seminoles. The Tigers have won five of their past six, recovering from a mid-season lull.
5. Pittsburgh
Record: 18-9 (9-7)Last week’s ranking: 3
Last week’s results: Loss 91-58 at Wake Forest; Win 79-64 vs. Virginia Tech
This week’s schedule: Tuesday at Clemson; Saturday at Boston College
Why No. 5? Pittsburgh has won six of its past seven games with the only loss coming against a Wake Forest team that is operating at full capacity. Jeff Capel has done a great in-season coaching job.
6. Virginia
Record: 20-8 (11-6)Last week’s ranking: 5
Last week’s results: Loss 75-41 at Virginia Tech; Loss 54-44 vs. North Carolina
This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Boston College; Saturday at Duke
Why No. 6? Scoring 85 points over a combined two games is ugly stuff even by Tony Bennett standards.
7. Syracuse

If there was a week that summed up the Hokies season, it was last week. They blow out Virginia by 34 at home, then go to Pittsburgh and allow 43 second-half points in a 15-point loss.

Four of the top-rated places for a night out in the United States are in the Empire State...and all north of the Big Apple.
A new ranking has deemed three Upstate cities among the top 50 party cities in the nation. A fourth city made it into the top 100 of the list by BonusFinder.com, a casino review website that analyzed everything from the number of bars and casinos to the time of last calls in 101 communities to craft its ranking.
Syracuse, the Salt City at the heart of Upstate New York, was dubbed the 27th best party city in the U.S. — ranking high for its number of bars, the price of the city’s hotel rooms and the average cost of taxi rides from the airport to downtown Syracuse.
Albany came in just below Syracuse, landing at No. 28 on the list. The state capital ranked particularly high thanks to its near-perfect score for boasting affordable hotels.
The other two Upstate cities on the list of great party places fell much lower on the ranking: Rochester claimed the No. 50 spot, while Buffalo placed at No. 80.
With a perfect 10/10 score, Atlantic City in New Jersey was crowned the best party city in the nation. New York City came in last place at 101.

Since one of the world’s largest warehouses moved in next door, Cody Ziparo’s backyard has become an unusable, sewage-laced mess.
Rainwater and snow melt used to flow off his land, onto the nearby Liverpool Golf and Country Club. But three years ago, Amazon built one of its high-tech distribution centers where the golf course once stood, next to Ziparo’s home on Morgan Road just north of Liverpool. And the water began backing up.
The water gets up to three feet deep, enough that Ziparo once kayaked around in it. It’s so bad, his twin toddlers can’t play in the backyard. Even the family dog isn’t allowed back there.
“We thought we had a nice piece of property,” said Ziparo, 41. “An acre in the middle of Liverpool is not very common. Now we have nothing.”
Ziparo is blaming Amazon, a company that made $30.4 billion in profits on $574.8 billion in sales last year.
And he’s not wrong. A review of town documents by syracuse.com | The Post-Standard proves his point.
Back in 2021, Amazon’s construction contractor built a berm to screen the 3.8-million-square-foot warehouse from Ziparo’s property. Now, the 20-foot-high berm is trapping water on Ziparo’s property. His backyard is so wet, his septic system can’t drain properly, resulting in raw sewage rising to the surface.
Plans filed by Amazon’s contractor, Trammell Crow Co., with the town of Clay included a promise to build a swale — a shallow ditch — at the bottom of the berm to carry rainwater from his backyard. But the swale was never built.
