Welcome to Made in the USA Day!

Taking place right before another patriotic holiday, Independence Day, Made in the USA Day encourages the manufacturing of goods in the United States and the purchasing of these American-made goods. It celebrates the companies and brands that manufacture their products in the United States, and gives consumers the opportunity to support them. Some sources point to Joel Joseph of the Made in the USA Foundation as the creator of the day, and lists the day as having its start in 1989.

Battle on podcast: Injuries, Boeheim’s Army and his advice to Mintz (PS; $; Waters)

Tyus Battle has experienced a lot despite being just 26 years old.

In his three-year college career at Syracuse, Battle scored 1,647 points. That puts him at No. 18 on the school’s scoring list. He earned a reputation as a clutch performer, taking and making big shots. His litany of game-winning shots includes ones that beat Clemson, Maryland, Georgetown and Arizona State.

Since leaving Syracuse, Battle has played professionally all over the globe, from Russia to Italy and Israel to China.

But he’s also had to deal with a series of injuries that have curtailed his career.

Battle joined the “Inside Syracuse Basketball” podcast to discuss his career and a variety of topics including whether he would play for Boeheim’s Army in the future and his advice to former SU guard Judah Mintz, who went undrafted in last week’s NBA draft.

When Battle left SU after the 2018-19 season, he had one year of eligibility remaining. The decision to leave was difficult, he said. Then he wasn’t selected in the NBA draft.

Syracuse men’s basketball creates new general manager position – Central New York Business Journal (cnybj.com; Reinhardt)

Syracuse University (SU) has hired a former scout for the New York Knicks to serve in the newly created role of general manager of the men’s basketball program.

Alex Kline, who graduated from SU in 2016, joins the Syracuse staff after four years as a scout with the Knicks NBA team, per SU’s Friday announcement.

The general manager will support men’s basketball head coach Adrian Autry in managing various aspects of the Syracuse program. Kline’s primary responsibilities will include scouting and recruiting, former student-athlete engagement, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, transfer portal management, and institutional fundraising in collaboration with University Advancement.

Are you sure your organization is prepared for an audit of your payroll practices? In this FREE one hour webinar to be held at noon on November 14, 2023, you

“As we look to compete at the highest levels, bringing in Alex as our General Manager position is critical,” Autry said in the SU announcement. “This move aligns with our goal of being at the forefront of player evaluation, development and retention, recruiting, and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) in college basketball. It will help Syracuse compete at the national level.”

With the Knicks, Kline was a talent evaluator who helped the organization with the NBA Draft, the trade deadline and free agency, as well as special projects for the team president, VP, and assistant general manager, SU said.

Kline had earlier served as basketball-operations assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA in 2016. The Knicks hired him as a scout in 2020.

His interest in recruiting started at a young age. Kline launched The Recruit Scoop in 2010, an online site devoted to publicizing high-school basketball players. “Rapidly growing interest” in the site led to affiliation with Yahoo! Sports and Rivals in 2012, while Kline was still in high school, SU said.

Syracuse Basketball: 4-star Ryder Frost takes official visit; other 4-stars may follow (itlh; Adler)

On Sunday, 2025 four-star wing Ryder Frost revealed via his Instagram page that he was on an official visit to Syracuse basketball.

The 6-foot-6 Frost, a fast-rising prospect in his class who recently vaulted into the top 100 nationally, received a scholarship offer from the Orange staff in late May, and he had indicated in media reports following that offer that he was highly interested in making a trip to the Hill.

First and foremost, I hope that Ryder's official visit to the 'Cuse has gone, or is going, splendidly. Frost is a standout rising senior at the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. In recent months, analysts and scouts have praised Frost for his AAU performances while shining for the 17U team of the Boston-based Middlesex Magic in the Under Armour Association league.

Syracuse basketball hiring NBA scout Alex Kline as general manager is slam-dunk move (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse University alum and former NBA scout Alex Kline is the new general manager of Syracuse basketball, and I can't begin to tell you how much I love this hire.

With the transfer portal's explosion and the ongoing evolution of name, image and likeness opportunities, I've seen various college basketball programs in recent months (and perhaps further back) name GMs of their squads to work on recruiting, NIL initiatives and player development.

Now, the Orange has joined that trend, and to me, it has done so in a big-time way. Kline, who earned a bachelor's degree in broadcast and digital journalism from Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 2016, joins the 'Cuse as its general manager after previously serving as a scout with the NBA's New York Knicks since 2020.

ESPN senior writer Pete Thamel, himself an SU alumnus, wrote in a post on X that Kline "has a deep level of knowledge of the industry from his days as a recruiting analyst." Yes, please.

Heck, even the headline of the SU Athletics press release has me jazzed - "Kline Named General Manager To Reimagine Recruiting."

Why Hiring a General Manager Was NECESSARY For Syracuse Basketball | Syracuse Basketball Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Basketball recently hired Alex Kline to be its first ever General Manager. Kelly is a former scout with the New York Knicks and a basketball operations assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans. Kelly will be assisting Adrian Autry's staff with recruiting and NIL opportunities. The Orange also added Youngstown St. to its non-conference schedule, and are also rumored to be playing Le Moyne next season.Jackson Holzer tells you why he likes the GM hire and why he likes the new non-cons added to the schedule on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast
Should College Athletes Have Contracts? (orangefizz.net; podcast; DA)
With a new landscape in college sports, the time has come to ask a pertinent question: Should college players have contracts? Fizz founder Damon Amendolara discussed this on a recent episode of “Watch D.A. Live” on YouTube. The transfer portal spins feverishly, with some players hopping from school to school every year. While there’s a feeling of “all is fair in love and sports” in the game, it may be a time where schools start asking for more of a guarantee.

Thom Abraham is a sports talk host in Alabama, the epicenter of college football passion and SEC dominance. He says not only did the SEC lead us to a place where college football is now headed, but it’s the time to ask for college players to have contracts.

It’s a fair position to take. If Fran Brown promises a certain amount of NIL money to a recruit, why shouldn’t the recruit also have some responsibility on his side? To this point it’s been a Wild West situation with players and NIL money, but it seems like we’ll be getting some structure around it in the coming years.

Report: Syracuse men’s basketball to play Youngstown State in 2024-25 season (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
The Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team’s non-conference schedule moves another step closer to being finalized for the upcoming season.

According to college hoops analyst Rocco Miller, the Orange will reportedly play the Youngstown State Penguins in mid-November as part of their non-con slate for the 2024-25 season. Syracuse’s matchup versus Youngstown State would also be the first time both programs have faced off.

The game is slated to be at the JMA Wireless Dome on November 16. Once confirmed, it would be Syracuse’s fifth confirmed home game at the Dome for the 2024-25 season. The Orange already locked in home matchups against Colgate (Nov. 12), Cornell (Nov. 27), Georgetown (Dec. 14), and Albany (day still TBD).

Syracuse Basketball: Updated non-conference docket with Tennessee, Youngstown State (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball's non-conference schedule in the upcoming season is getting closer to being finalized.

The Orange, in the 2024-25 term, will play 11 non-conference games and 20 Atlantic Coast Conference encounters. In late February, the ACC announced the conference's pairings for 2024-25, and you can see which league foes the 'Cuse will face via this press release from SU Athletics.

In mid-June, word broke that in the 2024 SEC/ACC Challenge, Syracuse basketball will travel to Southeastern Conference member Tennessee, which I'm delighted about, because my son primarily lives in Nashville, Tenn., and he loves the Vols (as well as 'Cuse).

Last November, at the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational in Hawaii, a top-10 Tennessee squad defeated Syracuse basketball after pulling away late, 73-56. In 2023-24, the Volunteers would go 27-9 overall, reach the Elite Eight of this spring's NCAA Tournament, and finish at No. 5 in both major top-25 polls.

In their all-time series together, Tennessee is 4-3 against the 'Cuse.

What's more, a few days ago, college basketball analyst Rocco Miller said in a post on his X page that the Orange will host Youngstown State as part of the team's non-conference calendar. In 2023-24, this Horizon League school sported a solid 22-10 record.

As far as I can tell, this would prove the first-ever meeting between the 'Cuse and the Penguins.

Former Syracuse forward Buddy Boeheim signs with Oklahoma City Thunder (orangefizz.net; Shalam)
Former Syracuse basketball star Buddy Boeheim has landed a new exhibit 10 deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder just two days after the Detroit Pistons waived the forward.

The Fayetteville native has spent the last two years with the Pistons organization, splitting time between the G-League affiliate Motor City Cruise, and Detroit. Boeheim still had a year left on his two way contract before Detroit decided to waive him.

It’s been just about two years since Boeheim graduated from SU. In his first year after ‘Cuse in 2022-23 with the Pistons, he played 18 games in the G-league, and just 10 in the NBA with Detroit. With the Cruise, he averaged 12.1 points. With the Pistons, Boeheim averaged just over a point a game with very limited playing time.

As for 2023-24, Boeheim appeared in 10 games for the Pistons and 31 games for the Cruise. In the NBA, the forward averaged just over three points a game. In the G-League though, he averaged 17.2 points per game, just over four rebounds, and two assists. The improvement with more minutes in the G-League points to why the Thunder picked up the forward.

The exhibit 10 contract that Boeheim signed is a non-guaranteed minimum salary deal that will not go against the Thunder’s cap space unless he makes the regular season roster. It can however be converted to a two-way contract before the season starts, so that Boeheim can still get G-League minutes.

The new Wegmans store in Astor Place, Manhattan, New York City.Photo provided by Wegmans

It looks like Wegmans will soon open a third store in NYC (PS; Herbert)

Hey Wegmaniacs: It looks like Wegmans Food Markets is planning to open a third store in New York City.

According to the Democrat & Chronicle, signs with official Wegmans branding have started appearing over the windows of a vacant storefront on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Photos published by the West Side Rag show Wegmans’ website address posted with images of groceries at a former Bed Bath & Beyond located at 1932 Broadway, between Lincoln Center and Central Park South.

The New York Post reported in February that Wegmans chairman Danny Wegman had bought the 58,874-square-foot space, but a company spokesperson said at the time it was a “personal investment” and there were no plans to open a store there.

But now the writing’s on the wall, literally, for what will soon be Wegmans’ third location in NYC.

Wegmans previously opened a supermarket in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard in 2019 and in Manhattan’s East Village in October 2023. A company spokesperson told the D&C that Wegmans was looking at the 1932 Broadway location before committing to the Manhattan store at Astor Place, and when it became available “the timing wasn’t right” because “we were focused on getting our Astor location designed, permitted, and open to the public.”

The Upper West Side location is expected to feature a “vertical transportation” system with elevators and a escalator-like conveyor for moving shopping carts between floors. The store would occupy the lower levels of a luxury apartment building called the Grand Tier, which features a fitness center, pool, and a 24-hour doorman service.

The company has not officially announced the new store or said when it is expected to open.

Wegmans, headquartered in Rochester, operates more than 100 stores in eight states and Washington, D.C. For 27 years in a row, the family-owned supermarket chain has made Fortune’s list of the Best Companies to Work For, ranking No. 6 in April.

Bear spotted wandering in Lysander’s Radisson neighborhood (video) (PS; Hayes)
A Ring camera captured a bear wandering through the front yard of a Lysander home on Sunday night.

Around 9:39 p.m., homeowner Candace Micho got a notification from her doorbell camera that something was moving outside her front door on the 3400 block of Van Wie Drive East in Lysander’s Radisson community.

When she checked the camera from her phone, she was startled to see a big black bear walking across her front yard. She has lived in the neighborhood for over a decade and has never seen a bear.

She quickly took to social media and the Ring website to warn neighbors about the bear sighting and tell them to keep pets and kids indoors.

She also called the state Department of Environmental Conservation to notify them. The person she spoke to said they had recently received other tips that a bear was in the area.

After a bear was spotted in Onondaga Hill on June 11, a DEC spokesperson said their protocol is to let the bear find its way out of residential areas on its own and intervene only as a last resort.

To decrease the chances of attracting a bear to your yard, the DEC advises residents not to leave food out, remove bird feeders and secure garbage and recycling.
