Welcome to National Lemon Meringue Pie Day!

National Lemon Meringue Pie Day is dedicated to the popular dessert, lemon meringue pie. Traditionally, the pie has three components: shortcrust pastry, lemon custard filling, and a meringue topping. These components are in this order, with the meringue on top and the pastry crust on the bottom, and there is no top crust. Lemon has been a flavor for custards and puddings since Medieval Times, but it was not until the 17th century that meringue was invented, being done so in the Swiss village of Meiringen. Meringue usually consists of egg yolks, lemon zest, sugar, and sometimes starch. Lemon meringue pie was invented in the 19th century, with early recipes coming from Romandy, a western part of Switzerland, and possibly Dorset in South West England.

Kiyan Anthony is the No. 1 recruit in New York; what is Syracuse’s history with the state’s top-ranked player (Mike’s Mailbox) (PS; $; Waters)

What do Pearl Washington, Jonny Flynn and Kiyan Anthony have in common?

That’s not a question in this week’s Mailbox, but the question leading off this week’s Mailbox could eventually lead us to the answer to the above question.

And the answer? We’ll get to that (and the question) in a second.

Meanwhile, this Mailbox also has an update on a Syracuse player coming off an injury and another look back at Syracuse legend Dave Bing.

Let’s get started.

(If you have a question for the Mailbox, email it to mwaters@syracuse.com).

Q: Has Syracuse ever landed the No. 1 ranked player in New York State? If Kiyan Anthony decides to attend Syracuse that might happen.

Gerard C.

Mike:
Kiyan Anthony, the highly-regarded recruit in the 2025 class who also happens to be the son of Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony, is currently the No. 1 rated player in New York State, according to On3.com.

Let the guesswork begin! An early prediction about Syracuse basketball (PS; Ditota)

The NCAA this summer decided to include Bart Torvik’s website in the analytical data it presents to the committee that decides which teams make the NCAA basketball tournament.

Torvik is respected among college basketball fans and sportswriters for his data. And over the past week, he’s dropped a couple interesting predictive tidbits about college basketball 2024-25.

Let’s not be overly serious about what any of these websites have to say about teams before a single ball is tossed in actual, meaningful games. But it’s August. It’s fun to look. It’s a perfect time to speculate - nobody has missed a shot or lost a game. Everybody is excited about what the new season might bring.

So, let’s dabble in the Torvik data.

His analysis suggests Syracuse will rank 72nd nationally to start the season. To put that into perspective, Torvik ranked SU 117 in the 2023-24 preseason. The Orange ranked 71st at the end of 2023-24.

He has SU finishing 12th in the ACC with a 15-13 overall record and a 10-10 conference mark. He believes SU’s offense will be better than its defense.

Syracuse men’s basketball will open 2024-25 season against Le Moyne (

MEN’S BASKETBALL TO OPEN SEASON AT SYRACUSE - Le Moyne College Athletics (lemoynedolphins.com; Lane)

The Le Moyne College men's basketball team will open its second season at the Division I level at Syracuse University on Monday, November 4.

The contest will be the seventh regular season meeting between the programs dating back to 1977-78 and the first since 2008, while the teams have also played nine exhibition games. The Orange have won all six of the regular season games and eight of the nine exhibition matchups.

The Dolphins, who fell to the Orange in an exhibition to open the 2021-22 season in the most recent matchup between the programs, return six letterwinners and one redshirt from last year's squad, which went 15-17, including 9-7 in their first season in the Northeast Conference. The Dolphins were the fourth seed in the NEC Championship and recorded an 82-61 victory over FDU in the first round before falling to eventual runner-up Merrimack College in the semifinals. The Dolphins return their third and fourth-leading scorers from last year in fifth-year guard Darrick Jones, Jr. and senior forward Ocypher Owens. The Dolphins have added six transfers, a pair of freshmen and a previous women's team practice player to the roster for 2024-25.

The Orange went 20-12 overall under first-year head coach Adrian Autry in 2023-24 and posted an 11-9 mark in ACC competition. The Orange return four letterwinners who averaged at least 10 minutes per game along with an expected contributor who redshirted last season, while adding four transfers and a pair of highly-regarded freshmen. They return their second and third-leading scorers and their third-leading rebounder.

The team's 2024-25 Northeast Conference schedule was released earlier in the day and the complete non-conference schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.

NYS Fair concert preview: 2024’s biggest show won’t be country (see full music lineup) (PS; Herbert)

Lainey Wilson may have broken the record for the largest crowd in New York State Fair concert history last year, but 2024′s biggest show definitely won’t be country music. Or rock.

The 2024 NYS Fair concert lineup is very diverse, with 39 national acts offering something for everyone, but this year’s throne likely belongs to hip-hop. The only question is: Who will win the rap battle?

Flo Rida, the voice of hits like “Low,” “My House,” “Wild Ones,” “Club Can’t Handle Me” and “GDFR,” will perform at the Fair’s Suburban Park stage on Thursday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. If the weather is favorable, he could easily draw 40,000 people like similar generational forces Nelly (43,000 in 2022) and Ludacris (39,400 in 2023). For comparison, Flo Rida currently averages 34 million monthly listeners on Spotify — more than any other 2024 Fair performer, and more than Nelly and Ludacris combined.

Other potential big draws include Big Boi (of Outkast fame) on Friday, Aug. 30, and “the boss” Rick Ross on Sunday, Sept. 1. Both rap shows will take place at 8 p.m. on the Suburban Park stage.

Even the Ying Yang Twins, Lil Jon’s partners in crunk on 2000s hits “Get Low” and “Salt Shaker,” could draw a large crowd to Chevy Court on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m.

Then again, could pop be king? The biggest non-rap concert on this year’s lineup is Joey Fatone and AJ McLean, who will perform *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys songs at Suburban Park on Opening Day (Wednesday, Aug. 21) at 8 p.m. The two boy bands were among the biggest artists of the Y2K/TRL era with songs like “Bye Bye Bye,” “It’s Gonna Be Me,” “I Want It That Way” and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”

Suburban Park, where the New York State Fair’s largest concerts will be held, is located in the New York Experience area on the west end near Gate 10, in the back of the Midway and past the Expo Center. There are no afternoon shows at Suburban Park this year, while the smaller Chevy Court (located near Gate 1, next to the Center of Progress Building) will feature two shows daily.
