Welcome to Basketball Day!
Basketball is one of the most popular team sports in the world and we celebrate it today, on the anniversary of the birth of James Naismith, its creator. Naismith was born in 1861 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. After leaving a position as the athletics director at McGill University in Montreal, Naismith came to the United States—a country where he would eventually gain citizenship—to the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, to teach physical education. His superior asked him to come up with an indoor sport that could be played during winter, which would be fair and not too rough. In December 1891, Naismith came up with "basket ball."
Naismith nailed peach baskets to the balcony at each end of the YMCA's gymnasium, at the height of ten feet. He divided his students into two teams and told them to try to toss the ball into the baskets. During the first game, nine players were on each team, and they played with a soccer ball. Naismith came up with thirteen basic rules for basketball, which became the game's first rulebook. On January 15, 1892, it was published in Triangle, the International Training School's paper.

Syracuse relies on two veterans down the stretch vs. Le Moyne: ‘I knew I had to make a big play’ (PS; Ditota)
Chris Bell anticipated the dribble-handoff.
So when Freds Pauls Bagatskis cut toward the top of the circle in Monday’s Syracuse-Le Moyne game, Bell had a pretty good idea of what he was trying to accomplish.
He stole the ball, was fouled and after he made two free throws, Syracuse breathed a sigh of relief in the form of an 86-82 win over the Dolphins.
“Just being aggressive,” Bell said. “I feel like I do a pretty good job of that in practice sometimes blowing up handoffs. I kind of saw that he was being lackluster with the ball so I just went in and blew it up and he kind of gave it to me.”

How Should Syracuse Fans Feel After Opener vs Le Moyne? (orangefizz.net; Papillo)
Woof. I mean, that was almost catastrophic for Syracuse basketball in last night’s 86-82 win over Le Moyne. This was a Dolphins team that just went D1 last year and had nothing to play for, (not allowed to play in NCAA Tournament) yet they gave it their everything. SU was TRAILING Le Moyne at halftime and was on the verge of a major upset, but found a way. Let’s dive into what ‘Cuse fans should be excited about, and what they should be worried about.
The Bad
Okay, let’s talk Donnie Freeman. There was so much buzz heading into his debut. He was labeled a top-20 pick according to mock drafts and was dubbed as the highest-touted recruit for SU since Carmelo Anthony. His debut was… not great. 10 points and 11 rebounds aren’t terrible, but 3-for-12 from the field isn’t ideal. If Syracuse wants to break their tournament drought, Freeman NEEDS to be a superstar this season, and hopefully, this is not a sign of things to come.
Speaking of players who needed to step up, where was Eddie Lampkin? Only 19 minutes in a tight game, I thought this was supposed to be a key add? The Colorado transfer had just 10 points and three rebounds, he definitely has to be better down the stretch.

Biggest MBB Losers 2024 Nov 4
I do this for football and it's very popular, but I don't think I've ever done it for basketball - but the results were so clear-cut I had to blog about them...
First, some background.
When the AP writers voted on their Preseason Men's Basketball Poll, they ranked nine SEC Men's Basketball teams:
#2 Alabama
#11 Auburn
#12 Tennessee
#13 Texas A&M
#16 Arkansas
#19 Texas
#21 Florida
#23 Kentucky
#24 Ole Miss
It seems like the AP voters decided to magnanimously bequeath depth on the SEC.
By contrast, when it came to the conference with the most NCAA basketball tournament wins, the AP voters decided to rank only two ACC teams:
#7 Duke
#9 UNC
Against that background, how did Day One go for all power conferences?
Ranked Losers.
Only three Top 25 teams lost. One of them played another ranked opponent, but two teams which, in the wisdom of the AP sportswriters were among the 25 best teams in the nation, lost to unranked opponents...- #8 Baylor lost to #6 Gonzaga, 63-101
- #13 Texas A&M lost to UCF, 61-64
- #19 Texas lost to Ohio State in Las Vegas, 72-80

Tuesday is one of the warmest November days ever recorded in Syracuse (PS; Coin)
Today has become one of the four warmest November days in Syracuse in 122 years of official records.
The temperature reached 80 degrees at 3 p.m. That breaks the Nov. 5 record of 77, set in 2022.
The average high on Nov. 5 is 53 degrees.
Only three other November days have reached 80 degrees in Syracuse since records began in 1902. They were:
- Nov. 8, 1938; 80 degrees
- Nov. 1, 1950; 81 degrees.
- Nov. 6, 2022; 80 degrees.
This marks the 12th record-high day in Syracuse in 2024, according to data compiled by WSYR-TV chief meteorologist Jim Teske.
This year is, so far, the warmest in Syracuse since records began in 1902.
The Longhouse Council of the Boy Scouts is closing its Sabattis Scout Reservation summer camp in the Adirondacks.Boy Scouts Longhouse Council
Boy Scouts Longhouse Council to close summer camp in Adirondacks (PS; $; Moriarty)
The Longhouse Council of the Boy Scouts is closing its 1,500-acre summer camp near Long Lake in the Adirondacks due to shrinking usage.
Edwin Theetge, CEO and Scout Executive of the Mattydale-based Longhouse Council, said the council made the difficult decision to stop operating a summer resident camp at its Sabattis Scout Reservation because of a drop in the number of Boy Scouts and leaders who attend its one-week camping programs.
“It‘s a beautiful facility that’s been in our possession for many years, but the changing climate of scouting has caused it to be underutilized,” he told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.
Theetge said the council needs at least 300 scouts and scout leaders to attend the summer camp for the facility to break even. But this year, fewer than 225 did, he said.
That means the programs do not generate enough revenue to operate the camp or maintain and improve the property, he said.
He said part of the problem is that membership in the council has fallen from 3,400 in 2020 to 1,775, reflecting a general decline in scouting nationwide.
But in addition, he said the remote, rustic nature of the camp makes it unattractive to many adult scout leaders, whose participation is needed to operate the camp.
