Syracuse men's basketball shows improvement in 79-74 loss to Texas Tech (youtube; video; CitrusTV)
Syracuse men's basketball came up short against Texas Tech and lost 79-74 in Game 2 of the Legends Classic. Despite a fourth place finish in the tournament, the Orange looked like a different team than before. Skyler Wilkes takes us through how SU's defense continues to develop.
Carmelo Anthony's Son Kiyan Makes 1 Promise to Syracuse During Visit, Days After Huge Announcement (essentiallysports.com; Debroy)
The Long Island Lutheran shooting guard has big things planned for his college basketball career. After the big college commitment announcement, Kiyan couldn’t resist his wish to join in to witness Syracuse’s anticipated matchup with rivals, Texas Longhorns on Thursday. Carmelo Anthony and Kiyan were spotted sitting together at the Barclays Center for the 2024 Legends Classic. In the midst of supporting the Syracuse Orange, Kiyan also made a promise for next year.
When asked about what his Syracuse Orange teammates can expect from him, Kiyan assured that “a good teammate. Somebody who’s ready to come in and play and kill. Someone who’s trying to win (and can do) anything they can do for their team.”
After months of anticipation, Kiyan revealed that he would be joining his father’s alma mater to carve his own legacy. The 17-year-old was commended for his performance at the Nike EYBL, where he averaged almost 20 points. He also showed up for the SLAM Summer Classic Volume 6. Considering his incredible performance so far, it’s natural for the team and fans to get hyped up.

Behind the scenes of Kiyan Anthony’s commitment to SU (Letter from the Editor) (PS; LaMonte)
Dear reader,
Last Friday night was an exciting one for Syracuse University basketball fans as Carmelo Anthony’s son, Kiyan, announced his decision to play for the Orange next year. Syracuse.com | Post-Standard reporter Mike Waters and videographer Scott Trimble were the only local journalists at Kiyan’s celebration in Brooklyn.
Mike covered Melo during his national championship run with Syracuse in 2002-03 and convinced the future hall of famer to participate in our groundbreaking documentary on that team, “Will to Win.”
Twenty years later, Mike reported on the recruitment of Melo’s son. Along the way, he told Kiyan he wanted to cover his announcement.
“I also tried to get word to Carmelo through some mutual acquaintances,” Mike said. “When it was announced that Kiyan would reveal his decision on his father’s podcast, I really thought I might be out of luck. But two days before the podcast was set to air, Kiyan sent me a text and said to come down to Brooklyn to his reveal party.”
Mike said the celebration, held in a renovated warehouse space in Brooklyn after Kiyan’s announcement on Carmelo’s “7pm in Brooklyn” podcast, had a graduation party feel to it, with many of Kiyan’s close friends and relatives in attendance.
“Right after Kiyan told the guests that he had decided to attend Syracuse, staffers pulled back a large black curtain to reveal another large room with Syracuse decorations. There were orange and blue balloons, a Carmelo Anthony Syracuse jersey, Syracuse banners, more balloons that spelled out Syracuse. It was Carmelo and La La’s surprise for their son,” Mike said.
As you might expect, Mike says the event was an emotional one for Carmelo. “Carmelo choked up (twice) while addressing the guests and talking about Kiyan’s recruitment and the whole process,” he said.
As a four-star recruit and top 40 prospect, Kiyan’s commitment to Syracuse is significant, but Mike believes it will be important for the program off the court, too.

Syracuse Basketball: Jaquan Carlos has struggled but is confident he can play better (itlh; Adler)
So far in this young 2024-25 season, it's proven a struggle for Syracuse basketball starting point guard Jaquan Carlos.
The 6-foot, 180-pound senior, a four-star transfer from Hofstra, was one of four guys at the collegiate level who transferred to the Orange this past off-season.
When he decided to play for the 'Cuse in 2024-25, several experts told me that Carlos was a terrific addition to Syracuse basketball, noting that Carlos is a steady, pass-first point guard who can score when needed but excels at facilitating for others.
As a junior at Hofstra during the 2023-24 campaign, Carlos averaged 6.3 assists per contest, good for a top-15 showing nationally. And in the Orange's two exhibitions, both wins, Carlos combined for 16 dimes against just one turnover.
However, in the team's five official games at the onset of 2024-25, as Syracuse basketball has gone 3-2 overall, Carlos hasn't played well. He acknowledges it, and he says he's confident that he can get on track, and the Orange will need him to if the 'Cuse wants to have any realistic shot at reaching the 2025 NCAA Tournament following a three-year absence from March Madness.

Syracuse Basketball: Chance Westry 'not ready to play right now,' Adrian Autry says (itlh; Adler)
In recent games that Syracuse basketball has played, I've had a lot of my fellow fans ask me about redshirt sophomore guard/wing Chance Westry as we chat on social media about the team.
Well, on Friday night, after the Orange fell to Texas Tech in New York City at the 2024 Legends Classic, head coach Adrian Autry discussed the 6-foot-6, 205-pound Westry, a talented guy who didn't play at all last season due to an injury and has yet to see game time in the current 2024-25 campaign because of an undisclosed illness.
Autry said during his post-game press conference that Westry simply is "not ready to play right now." The head coach noted that Westry is cleared to play and he's available, but Autry made it a point of emphasis that he's not just going to throw Westry out there for a few minutes when he's not ready to make an impact.
Autry noted that Westry hasn't played in two years and that it takes a long time to come back from that and get into game shape. The 'Cuse head coach says that Westry is battling hard in attacking his rehab, and his spirits are good.

Is a Syracuse-UConn basketball doubleheader happening? John Wildhack says it’s a possibility (PS; $; Lacy Jr)
In a pregame radio interview before the Syracuse football team faced off with UConn on Saturday, athletic director John Wildhack hinted that football may not be the only sport where the former Big East foes see each other in the future.
Wildhack said he’s been in contact with UConn athletic director Dave Benedict about the possibility of playing a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader.
“We talked about that last week,” Wildhack said on the Learfield Syracuse Radio Network before Saturday’s football game. “With their schedule commitments, our schedule commitments, not easy, but we’d like to get it done in the future.”
Wildhack did not give any details on when the games could happen or where they’d take place.
An SU athletics spokesperson said the talks have only been conceptual at this point.
Wildhack mentioned the recruiting it could have for the two northeast schools to renew their old rivalry.
“I think it makes sense for us,” he said. “We recruit New England heavily, so it makes sense from a recruiting perspective, alumni base, etc. That type of thing. So we’re happy to play them.”
Wildhack’s comments come on the heels of Syracuse women’s basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack calling out the lack of support for the women’s program.

Syracuse Basketball's Three-Point Woes: What's the Solution? | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Orange Basketball lost both of its games in the Legends Classic to the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders. Syracuse Head Coach Adrian Autry should be concerned about the three-point shooting this season. Chris Bell is under 30% from deep to start after being the second best shooter in the ACC last season. The defense improved with Jyare Davis and Lucas Taylor having strong performances against Tre Johnson and JT Toppin. Syracuse also did move up in the KenPom rankings, despite the losses.
Jackson Holzer gives his main takeaways from the Legends Classic on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Traveling for Thanksgiving in Upstate NY? Keep an eye on this storm system (PS; Coin)
A cross-country storm system could slam Upstate New York just in time for Thanksgiving, and lake effect snow is likely to follow over the weekend.
The details are unclear, and meteorological computer models aren’t in agreement, but meteorologists are urging anybody traveling for Thanksgiving to keep an eye on this storm.
All of New York is under a hazardous weather outlook, the National Weather Service’s early alert that bad weather is possible over the next few days.
If the storm reaching the West Coast now hits the Northeast – and that’s not a certainty yet – it could bring rain or snow on Thanksgiving and Friday. A blast of cold air will follow, which could bring lake effect snow into the weekend.
Before all of that happens, Upstate could see some rain Tuesday and Wednesday, and some lake effect snow on the Tug Hill plateau.
For Thanksgiving Day, there are a couple of competing scenarios. One commonly used meteorological computer model predicts the center of the storm moving up along the East Coast in the middle of the week. That would bring snow early Thursday and a mix of rain and snow later in the day to Upstate New York.
Another model shows the low pressure storm center staying farther to the south, which would limit rain and snow for Upstate New York.
“For now, there is just too much uncertainty to provide details on this system,” the weather service said.
Those details should become clearer over the next couple of days as new data pours in and the models adjust.
