Welcome to Blackout Wednesday aka Drinksgiving!

Blackout Wednesday, sometimes referred to as Drinksgiving, takes place the night before Thanksgiving Day, and in some parts of the United States is one of the biggest drinking and party nights of the year. Many college students come back to their hometown for Thanksgiving, and go to bars the night before to meet their friends whom they haven't seen while away at school. Many bars mark the occasion by having promotions and drink specials as well. Thanksgiving is usually a low stress holiday for college aged kids, where gifts don't need to be purchased, and older family members do the preparing of meals. This leaves college aged kids with more expendable cash, and the luxury of eating a big meal the day after drinking without having to prepare it.

Blackout Wednesday has been trending on Google searches since 2004, particularly during the month of November, and there seems to have been an uptick in searches for it starting around 2010. Furthermore, it seems to be most popular around the Great Lakes region. A sad consequence of the day is that a lot of drinking and driving takes place. In some locations it is the top drinking and driving night of the year, and accidents and fatalities are high. Fittingly, many police departments step up their patrols on Blackout Wednesday.

What to know about Cornell before its 129th meeting with Syracuse (DO; Wolf)

Syracuse suffered its first two setbacks this season at the Legends Classic in Brooklyn this past Thursday and Friday. First, its comeback effort against Texas fell short. The Orange trailed by 16 points in the second half before storming back to take the lead with four minutes left. Yet SU didn’t make enough plays down the stretch, falling 70-66.

The following night against Texas Tech, Syracuse ran out of gas. SU fell 79-74 after shooting just 10-for-26 in the second half. Though its three-game win streak was broken, Syracuse put on a better display than its first three games, where it won by a combined 15 points.

As it looks to break its first losing streak of the season, SU welcomes in-state rival Cornell to the JMA Wireless Dome. The Big Red are 2-2 across their last four games and are looking to defeat Syracuse for the first time since 1968.

Here’s everything to know about Cornell (4-2, 0-0 Ivy League) ahead of its meeting with Syracuse (3-2, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference):

All-time series

Syracuse leads 97-31.

Last time they played …

Syracuse defeated Cornell 81-70 on Dec. 5, 2023, at the JMA Wireless Dome. After leading by three at halftime, SU led by as many as 14 with 10 minutes remaining. Though Cornell chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to three with 2:59 left. Syracuse then finished the game on a 10-2 run to secure the win.

SU was paced by Judah Mintz, who hit a career-high five 3-pointers on seven attempts. The point guard recorded 28 points while Chris Bell also hit five triples. As a team, Syracuse went 7-for-16 from beyond the arc in the second half and shot 41% overall.

KenPom odds

Syracuse has an 81% chance of winning, with a projected score of 87-78.

The Big Red Report

Cornell lost its leading scorer, Chris Manon, from last season, but it wasn’t a huge blow since he averaged just 12.5 points per game. Manon helped the Big Red to a 22-8 record, eventually losing in the National Invitational Tournament’s first round to Ohio State.

Now, Cornell is led by leading scorer Jake Fiegen, while AK Okereke and Cooper Noard also average double figures at 11.5 points and 10.8 points per game, respectively. The Big Red are averaging 83 points per game and haven’t been held under 70 this season.

Cornell’s potent offense has to do with its pace. According to KenPom, its average offensive possession length is tied for the fastest possession length in the country. The Big Red hold onto the ball for 14 seconds on average. Syracuse ranks 192nd in that category, with an APL of 17.3 seconds.

How Syracuse beats Cornell

Syracuse’s first task is to slow Cornell down. If the Orange can draw this game out and force Cornell into longer possessions, they’ll be successful. But if Syracuse can’t accomplish that, it’ll have to put together a consistent offensive performance.

Cornell doesn’t have the size and athleticism to deal with the Orange, meaning they can take advantage of this on the offensive glass. Cornell allows its opponents to grab 36.6% of its misses, while Syracuse’s clip sits at 32%. The Orange are averaging 12.6 offensive rebounds per game. If Eddie Lampkin Jr. and Jyare Davis remain active on the glass, they can give fits to Cornell’s front court and gain extra possessions for SU.

Stat to know: 25.7

Through five games, Syracuse is shooting 25.7% from 3-point range. Only 24 teams in the country are knocking down 3s at a worse rate. The most 3s SU has hit this season was against Colgate, nailing eight. Outside of that, it hasn’t knocked down more than six. In the rest of those games, the Orange have shot below 30%.

Statistically, J.J. Starling is Syracuse’s best shooter. Of those with at least five attempts on SU’s roster, Starling’s 31% rate from deep is the best. Bell has knocked down just 28% of his looks, while nobody else’s percentage is above 20%.

Beat writers agree Syracuse will defeat Cornell (DO; Staff)
Syracuse returns to the JMA Wireless Dome to face Cornell following consecutive losses to Texas and Texas Tech in the Legends Classic. The Orange trailed by as many as 16 points early in the second half to UT and nearly overcame their deficit. Though SU took its first lead with four minutes remaining, it couldn’t hold on and fell 70-66 despite its best defensive performance of the season.

A day later against the Red Raiders, SU fought throughout the contest’s 40 minutes. Still, it fell short again, losing 79-74. While back-to-back losses at the Legends Classic brought the Orange’s record to 3-2, they looked vastly improved from their first three games — where they needed two overtimes to defeat Youngstown State and beat Le Moyne and Colgate by a combined six points.

Following two Quad 1 losses, SU faces Cornell before it embarks on two more Quad 1 road games against Tennessee and Notre Dame next week. The Big Red rank No. 187 on KenPom’s rankings and haven’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2010.

Here’s how our beat writers think Syracuse (3-2, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) will fare against Cornell (4-2, 0-0 Ivy League):

Zak Wolf (5-0)
Little Red
Syracuse 82, Cornell 71

Syracuse showed improvements in its trip to Brooklyn, playing two close games against Texas and Texas Tech. I don’t think those performances will translate into a blowout win over Cornell, but it will be enough for a more than comfortable one. The Big Red haven’t shown much consistency this season. After opening the season on a two-game win streak, they’ve split their last four.

Jake Fiegen remains a threat from the outside, averaging 15.5 points on 50% shooting from 3. But if the Orange can hold him quiet, they shouldn’t have much trouble in this one. Outside of Fiegen, Syracuse shouldn’t be concerned with Cornell’s other options offensively.

On the flip side, Syracuse needs to start hitting shots from the outside. The Orange have hit just 25.7% of their 3s this season. Against Cornell, I think we’ll finally see a strong showing from deep. SU knocked down 13 triples in this matchup last season, and we could see much of the same this time around. Expect a breakout game from Chris Bell, who had his best shooting performance against Texas Tech, as the Orange will get back in the win column.

Aiden Stepansky (5-0)
Big Orange
Syracuse 77, Cornell 70

While the Orange exited Barclays without a win, we definitely saw some growth from this group. Two close games against far-advanced opponents showed just a little closer to the team Autry envisioned in Year 2.

SU’s contest with Cornell nears the last of its layup line before a gauntlet of nonconference and ACC play. I have Syracuse getting back in the win column before maybe its biggest loss of the season to Tennessee.

Similar to the Orange’s games against other in-state opponents, Cornell will put up a fight and keep it close down the stretch. However, its defense has been horrific to begin the year, rating as the 281st best in the nation per KenPom. I see Syracuse playing strong offensively throughout the evening and J.J. Starling posting yet another impressive game from mid-range.

Additionally, I think Donnie Freeman gets going, continuing to progress through the first month of the season into what should end up as a strong freshman campaign. It won’t be the Big Red, but rather, the Big Orange cruising into Thanksgiving Day with a seven-point win.

Justin Girshon (5-0)
Back in the win column
Syracuse 83, Cornell 74

Syracuse has had a confusing start to its season. The Orange looked putrid across their first three wins before playing their best basketball across two losses in Brooklyn last week. Now, they return home to face their fourth nonconference mid-major opponent.

Hypothetically, just as the games against Le Moyne, Colgate and Youngstown State were, this should be an easy spot to get SU going before playing Tennessee and Notre Dame on the road. But with what the Orange showed before the Legends Classic, free wins don’t mean they’ll handle business.

Factoring in how much better Syracuse looked against Texas and Texas Tech, I believe this contest won’t come down to a last-second defensive stand or two overtimes. While I still don’t see SU pulling away early and cruising to a blowout win, I see it winning in wire-to-wire fashion while maintaining at least a three-possession lead for most of the game.

Cornell is one of the worst defensive teams in the country, hasn’t shot well from outside and doesn’t possess nearly the same talent as the Orange. Syracuse will take advantage and return to the win column.

Syracuse men’s basketball: what to watch for vs Cornell (TNIAAM; Staff)

The Syracuse Orange (3-2) are back in action tomorrow night when the Cornell Big Red (3-2) make the short trip up 81 to play in the JMA Dome. Tip-off is at 7:00 on ACCNX/Watch ESPN and here’s what we’re watching for:

Kevin: Defensive effort

The two games in Brooklyn showed a much better effort on the defensive end. It wasn’t enough to win, but the Orange showed more intensity when it came to fighting through screens and trying to stay in front of ball-handlers. Syracuse needs to keep up the effort and try to find a way to create more turnovers so they can get out and run. Cornell is averaging over 83 points a game so this could be a high-scoring appetizer for Thanksgiving.

Dom: Perimeter shooting efficiency on both ends

Syracuse’s struggles with free throws and outside shooting have been well-documented up to this point in the year, but the Orange certainly performed better in the former of those two categories in their last game versus Texas Tech (24/28 from the foul line, 6/21 from three). Syracuse doesn’t need to be hyper-efficient, but it does need to at least be respectable from the outside. Cornell is only 45/147 (30.6%) from three this year, but if the Orange don’t close out well enough, Big Red will make them pay.

Sam: Defend the three

As Nunes’ resident mid-major basketball sicko, I’ve already covered Cornell twice this year. Once when it defeated Samford on a buzzer-beater during the first week of the season, and again on Monday when it crushed Iona.

After that Iona game, I had the chance to speak with Big Red head coach Jon Jaques, and I asked about Syracuse.

“It’s going to come down to helping each other on defense. They’re talented and can make shots from different spots. They’re athletic, shotmaker type players. Obviously the o-glass will be a big deal. They have some big guys, Lampkin especially, who can pass. So that’s kind of a challenge, figuring out how to handle him.”

Anyway, Cornell does what Cornell does. They run and they shoot. Against Iona, it made 13 threes by sucking the defense in to find the open man, and finding wide-open guys in transition. I don’t think the Orange will have a major problem breaking the press, but I’m concerned about what happens if the Big Red are allowed to get out and run.

Analyst lauds Syracuse basketball 5-star commit Sadiq White as IMG beats top-10 team (itlh; Adler)
Five-star forward Sadiq White Jr., who is officially signed with Syracuse basketball in its 2025 class, is just getting his senior season underway at the powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

The 6-foot-8 White, who is rated as high as No. 15 nationally in the 2025 cycle by ESPN, is expected to contend for an invite to the annual McDonald's All-America game and other All-America showcases that will transpire next spring, national analysts and scouts say.

White, this past Monday, showed why. IMG, from November 25 to November 27, is participating in an event called the 5 for the Fight National Hoopfest, which is taking place at Pleasant Grove High School in Pleasant Grove, Utah.

In the Ascenders' first game, IMG went toe to toe with another terrific high school program, the La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind. Both are deemed as top-10 national squads by various high school hoops experts, and each is also a member of the loaded 14-team Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic ("EYBL Scholastic").

Ultimately, IMG would prevail over La Lumiere in a hard-fought 64-54 victory. White, who is one of four 2025 prospects officially signed with the Orange, played quite well in the Ascenders' triumph.

UConn basketball coach blames Syracuse native in technical meltdown: ‘You’re a joke!’ (PS; Herbert)
UConn basketball coach Dan Hurley had a meltdown in the final minute of his team’s overtime loss to Memphis.

Connecticut, the NCAA’s No. 2 ranked team, lost 99-97 in the first round of the Maui Invitational tournament and saw a 17-game winning streak that began last season come to an end. Hurley blamed the officiating, including Syracuse native Pat Driscoll, who has been a college hoops referee for three decades.

Hurley was livid after Driscoll called an over-the-back offensive rebounding call against the Huskies’ Liam McNeeley when the game was tied with 40.3 seconds remaining. Hurley fell to the floor and was whistled for a technical foul.

“You are a --ing joke!” Hurley screamed at the officiating crew. “You’re a joke!”

Memphis’ PJ Carter made four free throws — two for the personal foul, two for the technical — to put the Tigers ahead for good. Memphis coach Penny Hardaway called the victory over the back-to-back defending national champions the biggest win of his coaching career.

Hurley told CBS Sports that he didn’t think his technical foul was the reason his team lost: “I think it was the s----y calls.”

Hurley, who had to be held back by an assistant coach during the heated moment, continued to object to Driscoll after the game.

“For that call to be made at that point of the game was a complete joke,” Hurley told media afterwards.

“I might have lost my balance by the absurdity of the call, or maybe I tripped... But if I made that call at that point, I would have ignored the fact that I was on my back. If I made that call, I would have ignored that. I would have ignored that. That was a major, obviously, a major,” he continued. “How you could call that while that game was going on, the way that game was going on is just beyond me.”

Rain and light snow is expected on Thanksgiving Day across Upstate New York, with less than an inch of snow falling through 7 a.m. Friday in much of the region. Western New York and the Tug Hill Plateau could see several inches of snow by Friday morning.National Weather Service

Thanksgiving travel in Upstate NY: Rain to start, lake effect snow over the weekend (PS; Coin)

Getting to the family dinner on Thanksgiving Day shouldn’t be bad across most of Upstate New York, but coming home over the weekend could be treacherous in lake effect snow areas.

When the first wave of the storm system moves from the Plains into Upstate New York Thursday, temperatures in valleys and along the I-90 corridor should be warm enough to generate rain but little snow.

Temperatures on Thanksgiving should be relatively mild, with highs in the low 40s across must of Upstate, according to the National Weather Service.

In the hilltops of the Southern Tier and Tug Hill plateau, there could be some wet snow on Thanksgiving, mostly at elevations over 1,800 feet, the weather service said.

The weather pattern changes dramatically Thursday night as a cold front pours in, bringing the coldest temperatures of the year so far. For the weekend, high temperatures will barely nudge past freezing, if at all.

And that cold air will blow across the warm Great Lakes, generating what the weather service says could be the first significant lake effect snow of the season.

For Friday and the early part of the weekend, winds will likely come from the west, keeping the lake effect snow confined to Tug Hill and western Southern Tier. More than 7 inches of snow could fall in those areas, the weather service said.

Winter storm watches will be in effect Friday through Monday morning in Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus counties and the southern half of Erie county in Western New York and for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties on Tug Hill.

Winds could generate lake effect snow from the Upper Great Lakes as well as lakes Erie and Ontario.

“The potential exists for a significant, long-duration lake effect snow event,” the weather service said. “Travel could be very difficult to impossible with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads.”

As the weekend progresses and turns into early next week, winds are expected to shift and blow from the northwest. That could bring heavy lake effect snow to Rochester and Syracuse, and as far south as Oneonta.
