Welcome to Ice Cream Day!

Ice cream is made with ingredients such as eggs, cream, vanilla, milk, and sugar. The forerunners of ice cream were flavored snow and ice. Marco Polo later brought a recipe that resembled sherbet back to Italy, which developed into ice cream there sometime during the sixteenth century. In England and France, royalty were the first to eat foods similar to ice cream. "Cream Ice" was eaten by Charles I of England in the seventeenth century, and Catherine de Medici of Italy introduced a similar frozen treat to France in the mid-sixteenth century, after she married French King Henry II. The general public began eating ice cream around 1660.

Syracuse, Georgetown renew rivalry in search of resume-building win; plus 4 more things to know (PS; $; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange and Georgetown Hoyas will meet for the 100th time on Saturday in a game that reflects the current state of both programs and, as a result, the rivalry between the two schools.

In the rivalry’s heyday, Syracuse and Georgetown waged war on the hardwood, vying for conference championships and Big East supremacy all with national rankings on the line.

On Saturday, Georgetown (7-2) and Syracuse (5-4) will both enter the JMA Wireless Dome unranked. Rather than staking a claim to a monumental victory, the two teams are merely looking for a win to boost their lackluster resumes.

Syracuse has played four games against teams ranked in KenPom.com’s Top 100 and lost all four. All four were away from the JMA Dome. Georgetown is 0-2 in games against the KenPom Top 100, losing to Notre Dame and West Virginia.

Similarly, Georgetown’s seven wins have come against teams outside the Top 200. The Hoyas’ best win, per KenPom, was a 100-68 thumping of No. 233 Albany. Syracuse is coming off a 102-85 win over Albany on Tuesday, but the Orange’s best win came against No. 119 Cornell.

Just how beneficial a win would be for either team, beyond a matter of pride, is debatable. Georgetown is No. 89 on KenPom, while Syracuse is No. 100.

Time is running out for Syracuse and Georgetown to notch a good non-conference win. The Hoyas’ lone remaining game outside the Big East is against Coppin State. The Orange still has Maryland (next Saturday in Brooklyn) and Bucknell left before entering the remaining portion of its ACC schedule.

The Syracuse-Georgetown game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:30 p.m. and will be televised on the ACC Network.

Here are 4 more things to know about Saturday’s matchup:

Georgetown vs Syracuse: 2024-25 College basketball game preview, TV schedule (bustingbrackets.com; Loose)

Georgetown heads to Syracuse for the latest renewal of this old Big East rivalry; will the Hoyas get a notable road win or do the Orange take care of business and defend their home floor yet again?
TV schedule: Saturday, December 14, 2:30 pm ET. ACCN

Arena: JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York

Last year was brutal at Georgetown (7-2) with just 9 wins and very little success in the Big East, though Ed Cooley is hoping that year two with the Hoyas proceeds much more smoothly. They’ve stockpiled early victories at home, though they did get worked in a 21-point home loss to Notre Dame nearly a month ago. They’re most significant challenge was last week at West Virginia and that also ended in double-digit defeat.

Freshman Thomas Sorber (15.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg) is a 4-star prospect who has already asserted himself as a major playmaker in Georgetown’s frontcourt. After monster numbers last season, Jayden Epps (14.2 ppg, 2.6 apg) is still leading the charge in the backcourt in his junior season. Additionally, Micah Peavy (13.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.9 apg) has had some nice early shooting figures and is a big piece of this team after spending the last three years out at TCU.

Georgetown is 87th in KenPom, 96th in the NET, and hasn’t really proven themselves against quality opponents this year. It’s hard to even look at this schedule at pinpoint which the best win is, because choosing between Albany, Mount St. Mary’s, and UMBC isn’t ideal. Still, this team is showing signs of growth and hasn’t suffered any rough upsets, though the 3-point shooting numbers are pretty abysmal.

On the other side, Syracuse (5-4) hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire themselves. This program just hasn’t been operating at a high level in recent years, though Adrian Autry is hoping his second year is much better as well. The Orange dropped tough games against Texas, Texas Tech, and Notre Dame while also getting plastered by Tennessee last week and similarly lack great wins on this resume.

Ralph Rotella with bags of shoes he's collected, cleaned and repaired for the annual Christmas Shoe Drive at his store, Discount Shoe Repair, 114 E. Washington St.Don Cazentre

A new record for the Syracuse Christmas shoe drive? Ralph (the downtown shoe guy) has faith (PS; Cazentre)

With a week to go in his annual Christmas shoe drive, Ralph Rotella is brimming with confidence.

“I think we have a new record this year,” said Rotella, who is in his 14th year collecting footwear, from sneakers and sandals to boots and clogs. He cleans and donates them each year to the Syracuse Rescue Mission.

Last year the drive, based out of Rotella’s Discount Shoe Repair at 114 E. Washington St., collected 38,841 pairs. That broke the single-year record of 37,370 set in 2021.

Another good year could push the number to nearly 250,000 pairs (or more) since Rotella started the drive in 2011. That first year he collected 35 pairs.

“A quarter million!” Rotella said. “That would be wonderful.”

Rotella collects shoes year-round, but the Rescue Mission truck stops by each December to make the final pick-up for the season. That will take place early on Dec. 19.

The Rescue Mission gives many of the shoes to the homeless people and other clients it serves, and sells others to raise money in its Thrifty Shopper stores. Any that can’t be used, usually fewer than 10%, are recycled.

As always, Rotella said the biggest need this year is shoes for children.

“Kids' shoes,” he said. “We always need kids' shoes.”

New horror movie shot in CNY aims to be a Halloween tradition, boost filmmaking in Syracuse (PS; Herbert)

An up-and-coming local production company is behind a new horror movie that recently wrapped filming in Central New York.

“The Hallowarrior,” starring Milly Shapiro (”Hereditary”) and Shannyn Sossamon (”A Knight’s Tale”), is the first major co-production from The Dazey Phase, based in Syracuse. The post-apocalyptic horror film follows Pumpkin (Shapiro), the last girl on Earth, scavenging for supplies on the eve of Halloween when she encounters a gang of raiders (led by Sossamon) and must fight them off.

Scenes were shot in Jordan and Tully this past fall, plus the Case Supply Soundstage in Syracuse. The production will be eligible for New York State Film Fax Credits, which are 40% in Upstate New York when using qualified production facilities like the Case Supply Soundstage. That financial incentive was part of what drew “The Hallowarrior” writer-director Ben Sottak to the Syracuse area, and to The Dazey Phase.

“It was a really sort of great, serendipitous, fortuitous moment where they were already looking at Syracuse and then we happened to connect with the team,” said Danielle Benedict, the head of strategy and operations for The Dazey Phase Production Company.

A large net hangs over the side of the brick building at 400 Erie Blvd. W. in Syracuse on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2024. The building's owner started to demolish the crumbling building in the summer but the city of Syracuse sued on Nov. 19, seeking to take over the work that they believe is taking too long. Judge allows Syracuse to demolish crumbling building that’s shut down part of busy street (PS; $; Boyer)
The city of Syracuse can take over the demolition of a massive warehouse that’s been shedding bricks for months, forcing the shutdown of a busy street lane, a judge ruled Thursday.

“My concerns are that this building is a hazard,” State Supreme Court Judge Joseph Lamendola said during a hearing. “It’s a hazard to the community, it’s a hazard to traffic, and it’s an eyesore.”

Saying he believed the defendant has been “thumbing his nose” at the city’s legitimate safety concerns, the judge granted a demolition order request the city made in a lawsuit filed Nov. 19 in Onondaga County against property owner Bowers Development.

The East Syracuse company owns the empty, seven-story warehouse at 400 Erie Blvd. W., which hovers above Erie Boulevard and West Street.

An on-ramp to West Street and the lane closest to the building have been closed since mid-June, when bricks began falling onto the state-owned road.

Before going to court, the city issued an emergency order directing Bowers to demolish the building by June 24. Company President Bryan Bowers told city officials he had a plan in place to complete the work during the summer. City officials agreed to Bowers’ timetable to have demolition finished by early September, but minimal work has taken place, according to the city’s lawsuit.

Despite a court deadline of Dec. 5 to respond to the lawsuit, Bowers did not provide any information to the court until this week. His lawyer sent a letter after business hours on Wednesday asking that Thursday’s hearing being postponed because he had just been retained. The attorney also provided an independent engineering report from August that said there wasn’t a need for an expedited demolition.

The city opposed the request for more time and noted that the engineering report Bowers supplied said temporary reinforcements were needed in order for the slower demolition schedule to proceed safely. The city said there’s no indication such stabilization work has taken place.

“I frankly have one word, and it’s ‘enough,’” city attorney Todd Long told the judge Thursday morning.

Bowers was not in court. His newly retained attorney had told the court he had a previous court matter scheduled, so he also was not there.
