Welcome to Argyle Day!
Argyle—people seem to either love it or hate it. Argyle Day was created as a way for people to brighten up winter by wearing argyle, the more the better. Some people just wear argyle socks on the day, but some are known to wear argyle hats, sweaters, dresses, and pants as well.
Argyle is a diamond pattern with overlapping diagonal lines. The design came from the tartan of Clan Campbell, a clan from Argyll, a county that was in western Scotland. They used it in their kilts and plaids. By the seventeenth century, the Scottish were wearing "tartan hose," which look similar to the argyle socks of today.

Let him eat cake: How JJ Starling celebrated his 21-point game and win over Georgia Tech (PS; $; Waters)
On Saturday, JJ Starling couldn’t really celebrate his return after missing Syracuse’s previous seven games with a broken left hand as the Orange lost to Florida State.
On Tuesday, Starling scored 21 points, including a clutch jumper with just over a minute remaining, to lift Syracuse to a much-needed 62-55 victory over Georgia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome.
And Starling celebrated in style with some of mom’s German chocolate cake.
The return of Starling plus the Orange’s first win over a Power Five team this season had the Syracuse players in good spirits in an upbeat locker room.
“Oh my gosh, it feels so good,’’ Starling said of the win. “Not for the outside, but just for us. We work so hard. We’ve been working hard this whole season. I mean, we haven’t been getting the results we’d like, but the outside people don’t see the amount of work that we put in.
“So it’s just nice to get this win.’’
Syracuse’s record is now 7-8 on the season, but the Orange is 5-3 with Starling in the lineup.
Syracuse coach Adrian Autry has repeatedly referred to Starling as one of the best guards in the ACC.
“JJ’s big time,’’ Autry said. “He’s one of the best guards in the league and one of the best guards in college basketball. I think if you followed us through the stretch without him and then having him back now, I think you can see the difference and see how important he is.’’

Syracuse’s win over Georgia Tech was needed relief after rough ACC start: ‘Oh my gosh, it feels so good’ (PS; $; Axe)
Syracuse basketball’s 62-55 victory over Georgia Tech on Tuesday night at the JMA Dome could easily fall under the old adage of “a win is a win” with how it was attained.
Starting power forward Donnie Freeman was out with a lower-leg injury. Point guard Jaquan Carlos was out of the starting lineup for the first time this season, and the team revealed Chance Westry’s unavailability due to “medical reasons" just before tip.
The SU fan base has been rather cranky about what it had witnessed from the below .500 Orange during an 0-3 start in ACC play and 0-8 mark against Power Five competition.
Tuesday’s game on a snowy night with students still home on winter break was the lowest-attended of the 2024-25 season, with an announced crowd of 13,395.
The Orange and Yellow Jackets had a rock fight in the first half, leading to a 25-24 halftime score. Both teams shot a combined 8-of-41 from the 3-point line and fumbled away a combined 31 turnovers. Georgia Tech finished the game 3-of-11 from the free throw line.
Tuesday’s victory marked the 2,000th win in program history and about 1,990 of them were easier on the eyes than this one.
There was definite tension in the air and someone had to find the release valve.
So after JJ Starling had scored 21 points to lead Syracuse to this much-needed triumph, he couldn’t hold back the relief it brought on.
“Oh my gosh, it feels so good,” Starling said. “Not for the outside, just for us. We work so hard. We’ve been working hard this whole season. We haven’t been getting the results we like, but the outside people don’t see the amount of work we put in. It was nice to get this win.”

Kim Kardashian thanks Kiyan Anthony for a special Syracuse gift (PS; Herbert)
We’ve seen celebrities like Taylor Swift, Ethan Hawke, Drake and Amy Adams wearing Syracuse University gear: Is Kim Kardashian next?
“The Kardashians” star revealed in an Instagram Story on Tuesday night that she received a special Carmelo Anthony edition Syracuse basketball bomber jacket from Melo’s son, Kiyan Anthony.
“Thank you @kiyananthony,” Kim K wrote with a photo of the jacket.
Kiyan, 17, is a Syracuse basketball commit whose mother, La La Anthony, is close friends with Kardashian. Kardashian, 44, wished Kiyan a happy birthday on social media last March by sharing a cute throwback photo of Kiyan with Kim’s daughter, North West.
It’s unclear if the gift was for a special occasion; Kardashian’s birthday is in October. Kiyan, La La and Carmelo have not posted about it on social media.

Syracuse Orange: What the heck is up with the ACC in football and hoops? Just brutal. (itlh; Adler)
While I tend to revert to positivity over negativity, if I'm being honest, the Atlantic Coast Conference is in a rough spot, although Syracuse football certainly put forth a stellar 2024 season, going 10-3 overall and headed for a top-20 national finish.
Syracuse basketball, on the other hand, is struggling, to say the least. I voiced my frustration there in this column from Monday.
As the College Football Playoff ("CFP") heads toward its semifinal round later this week, the ACC in football laid a total egg during bowl season, going just 2-11 overall. The ACC's only two bowl triumphs came from Syracuse football, which beat Washington State in the Holiday Bowl late last month, and Louisville.
Look, I get that bowl games don't have the same cache as they once did, given the transfer portal's explosion, opt-opts, NIL and other factors, as my brother Chuck Fiello articulated in a recent piece.Conference bowl records entering @CFBPlayoff semis (ranked by win pct.)

65 inches and counting: See photos and videos from Central NY’s lake effect snowstorm (PS; Hernandez)
Some Central New York students got an extended holiday break after a lake-effect snowstorm canceled school on the first Monday back, capping off two weeks without classes.
Camden, in northern Oneida County, was buried under a jaw-dropping 65 inches of snow — more than five feet — by Sunday during a multiday storm. And the flakes kept falling.
A state of emergency was declared in Oneida County on Sunday afternoon. Another lake effect storm has hit Central New York this week, increasing snow totals around the area.
Residents of Camden and surrounding areas bundled up, grabbed their shovels, and shared jaw-dropping photos and videos of the snow on social media.
Many shared photos of cars barely visible under towering heaps of snow and asked — some jokingly, some seriously — if any teenagers wanted to make a little cash by digging out their snow-buried vehicles.
Here’s a look at some of the wild winter scenes from the weekend. Have photos or videos you want to share? Send to features@nyup.com or tag @newyorkupstate on Instagram or TikTok.

I've lived here my whole life, and let me tell you, winters like this are as rare as my New Year’s resolutions lasting past January. The last time we had a storm like this, I was still a kid, trying to build the world’s worst snowman. It’s been at least 12 years since Mother Nature threw this kind of tantrum! #WinterThrowback #NostalgiaWithFrostbite #SnowMuchFun

Legendary folk singer dies at 86; wrote biggest hit at Central NY college (PS; Herbert)
A legendary folk singer-songwriter who wrote his biggest hit at a Central New York school is dead at age 86.
Peter Yarrow, best known as one-third of the music trio Peter, Paul and Mary, died Tuesday, according to publicist Ken Sunshine. Yarrow had been battling bladder cancer for the past four years.
“Our fearless dragon is tired and has entered the last chapter of his magnificent life. The world knows Peter Yarrow the iconic folk activist, but the human being behind the legend is every bit as generous, creative, passionate, playful, and wise as his lyrics suggest,” his daughter Bethany said in a statement.
Yarrow co-wrote the group’s biggest hit, “Puff the Magic Dragon,” while at Cornell University with college friend Leonard Lipton, according to the Associated Press. Despite theories it was inspired by drug usage and referenced marijuana smoke, Yarrow said it was a tale about the loss of childhood innocence as a young boy named Jackie Paper outgrows his make-believe dragon friend.
