Why Does Ken Pomeroy Rank Syracuse Higher Than Most Experts? (PS; Ditota)

The initial USA Today Coaches poll lists Syracuse as No. 24 nationally; ESPN ranks SU No. 23 in its preseason power rankings. The Orange lost four key players from last season's 28-6 team, two of whom currently are on NBA rosters (Tyler Ennis, Jerami Grant).

Ken Pomeroy, the wizard of college basketball metrics, seems much more optimistic about the Orange. Pomeroy ranks Syracuse No. 11 in his preseason poll.

"That's the thing when you do projections," Pomeroy said by telephone today. "Most of them make sense and the ones that seem like they don't stick out."

Pomeroy explains his Orange elevation with this rationale: SU routinely accumulates quality prep players, it annually performs at a high level and the university pours money into its basketball program to enable it to compete with elite college basketball teams.

So while Pomeroy understands SU needs to replace the bulk of its scoring from a season ago, he's confident that the Orange recruiting pipeline has supplied players to fulfill that obligation.

"My system is not particularly player-based," he said. "It looks at who you lost, but it considers the quality of the players that are going to replace them."

Onondaga Tower Joins Growing List of Downtown Buildings Illuminating the City Skyline (PS; Kirst)

If you're in downtown Syracuse tonight, you're invited to watch as another prominent building joins the movement toward illuminating the city skyline.

At 6:30 p.m., the Onondaga Tower will be bathed in changing light by Ephesus Lighting, a company with offices on the ground floor of the 15-floor building at Jefferson and Warren streets. According to Chuck Sangster, whose CBD Companies renovated the tower, the exterior now holds 22 Ephesus LED fixtures. They're capable of creating a variety of color schemes that will cover all four walls at night.

Tuesday, we met Sangster and Eric Will, a CBD leasing agent, at M. Lemp Park on South Warren Street - the same place where civic officials will gather tonight for the official unveiling. We watched as David Solini - a facilities manager who was inside the structure - went through a sequence of brilliant colors on the walls of the tower: Red, green, pink, lavender.

Poll: John Katko Surges Past Rep. Dan Maddei in Volatile Syracuse Race for Congress (PS; Weiner)

Republican John Katko has seized the momentum and surged past U.S. Rep. Dan Maffei to open up a 10-point lead in their race for Congress, according to a new poll by Syracuse.com/The Post-Standard and Siena College.

In a stunning reversal from five weeks ago when Maffei had an 8-point lead in the joint poll, Katko now leads Maffei among likely voters 52 percent to 42 percent. Only 6 percent remain undecided.

It is only the second independent poll to be made public in a campaign that has attracted national attention and $6.4 million in spending because the 24th Congressional District is considered among the most competitive House races in the nation.

The poll of 704 likely voters in the district underscores the volatility of the race, with wild swings in the candidates' popularity. Voters were contacted by live operators on Wednesday through Friday of last week. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

There are LOTS of unproven commodities on Syracuse's roster. Plenty of talented pieces but not a ton who have proven they can get it done.

Syracuse returns only 37.5 percent of its scoring from last season. That's the lowest percentage Jim Boeheim has returned in 38 years.

Syracuse needs breakout seasons from three guys - Michael Gbinije, Tyler Roberson, + Rakeem Christmas. All three are pivotal for Orange.

Jim Boeheim told @CBSSports Tyler Roberson will play plenty of backup PF and Michael Gbinije to see time at PG, SG, and SF this season.

Early prediction on Syracuse starting five --- Kaleb Joseph, Trevor Cooney, Tyler Roberson, Chris McCullough, Rakeem Christmas...

Tyler Roberson has a Trevor Ariza type feel to his game. Great in transition, off. glass. Should produce with more PT.

So much Trevor Ariza in Tyler Roberson...

Kaleb Joseph is a change of pace PG. Vastly different in mold than Tyler Ennis. More of an attacker than a set up guy. Has keys to the car.

Syracuse is somewhere among the teams that will finish beween 5 and 10 in the ACC. Will be in a lot of 60-60 games with 4 mins to play.
