Mike Hopkins Speech at Hardwood Club Dinner (PS; Mink)
Mike Hopkins' eyes started welling with tears less than two minutes into his speech Sunday night at the 44th annual Hardwood Club banquet.
The 21-year Syracuse basketball assistant coach was the recipient of the Vic Hanson Medal of Excellence, presented to an individual who has ties to the program and has made outstanding contributions to college basketball.
» Boeheim: 'I'm not going anywhere'
Hopkins spoke for nearly 20 minutes, and his remarks were laced with all the emotions that make him a favorite among fans, colleagues and especially players.
Here are the most memorable moments from Hopkins' speech:
1. Hopkins became most emotional talking about his father, who had told him "there are no shortcuts in life."
"My dad," Hopkins said, needing a long pause before trying to continue fighting back tears.
"Every day get up, wouldn't see him in the morning, he'd drive 65 miles one way to work and back. And you saw it every day, how to make it.

Scary Moment for SU Recruit Diagne in Playoff Win (PS; Waters)
Syracuse basketball recruit Moustapha Diagne survived a scary moment in his high school team's playoff game on Saturday night.
Diagne, a 6-9 forward, scored 10 points in Pope John XXIII High School's 61-52 win over Don Bosco Prep in a North Jersey Non-Public A semifinal game on Saturday. But it was a basket Diagne didn't make that sent a huge scare through the stands.
At one point in the game, a teammate sent a lob pass to Diagne. The pass was too high for Diagne, who wound up grabbing the rim. His momentum sent his legs ahead of him and a photo of the play shows Diagne almost horizontal to the court.
"Crazy, scary alley-oop that went awry,'' said David Wilder, who is Diagne's host father. Wilder tweeted out a photo of the play. "Tapha eventually got vertical and landed safely.''

Class of 2016 Megastar Tyus Battle Still Considering SU Despite NCAA Sanctions (PS; Ditota)
Tyus Battle, a point guard in the Class of 2016 long coveted by the Syracuse basketball program, has not eliminated the Orange from his recruiting list, his father said today.
NCAA sanctions, announced last Friday, trimmed a total of 12 men's basketball scholarships over four seasons starting in 2016-17, suspended head coach Jim Boeheim through nine ACC games next year and put the men's basketball and football programs on probation for five years.
"At this point, now that I understand it better, as long as they have a scholarship for Tyus, as long as they can field a strong team that can compete for a national championship, I'm OK with it," Gary Battle said in a telephone conversation.
Battle said he has not spoken with Orange coaches who are recruiting his son since news of the NCAA sanctions broke. He has had previous conversations with SU coaches about potential punishments.

Bracketology: Duke Remains Atop At-Large Field (PS; Stevens)
The at-large board is a tool that reflects roughly where teams in the at-large field are roughly situated relative to each other --- and a reminder that 36 at-large teams will be selected no matter the knee-jerk reactions from game to game.
The top seeds in uncompleted conference tournaments --- among them Arizona, Boise State, Davidson, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Southern Methodist, Villanova, Virginia and Wisconsin --- are considered automatic qualifiers for projection purposes and not included on the at-large board.
With only a week left before Selection Sunday, it's time to pare the at-large board down considerably. It isn't realistic that even some of the teams listed at the bottom of this board can play their way into at-large slots, but it is worth tracking who remains fairly close to the edge of the field.
