Welcome to World Mosquito Day!
World mosquito day honours the malaria work of Sir Ronald Ross.
In 1902, British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross received the Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work on malaria. His discovery of the malarial parasite in the gastrointestinal tract of theAnopheles mosquito led to the realization that malaria was transmitted by Anopheles, and laid the foundation for combating the disease.1

Interesting facts about mosquitoes from National Geographic:2
- Mosquitoes are carriers for some of humanity’s most deadly illnesses, including malaria, west nile virus, yellow fever, dengue fever and encephalitis.
- There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes but three are primarily responsible for the spread of human diseases: (1) Anopheles mosquitoes carry malaria and also transmit filariasis (also called elephantiasis) and encephalitis. (2)Culex mosquitoes carry encephalitis, filariasis, and the West Nile virus. (3)Aedes mosquitoes carry yellow fever, dengue, and encephalitis.
- Mosquitoes use exhaled carbon dioxide, body odors and temperature, and movement to home in on their victims.
- Only female mosquitoes have the mouth parts necessary for sucking blood. They use the blood not for their own nourishment but as a source of protein for their eggs. For food, both males and females eat nectar and other plant sugars.
- All mosquitoes need water to breed, so eradication and population-control efforts usually involve removal or treatment of standing water sources. Insecticide spraying to kill adult mosquitoes is also widespread. However, global efforts to stop the spread of mosquitoes are having little effect, and many scientists think global warming will likely increase their number and range.
What Syracuse Players Are Predicted to be Drafted in 2016? (TNIAAM; Szuba)
Today we take a look at which players on the Syracuse basketball roster are projected to be taken in the 2016 NBA Draft. Somewhere, Jim Boeheim looks as perplexed as he does in the above photo, thinking to himself, "Why?"
The 2016 NBA Draft is a lifetime away at this point. The Syracuse basketball team is still 74 days away from its first exhibition game, but it's still fun to prognosticate draft night. Today, we take a look at who the experts think will be taken in the 2016 NBA Draft from this year's Syracuse Orange team.
Michael Gbinije has garnered a great deal of attention this summer. From playing for the Nigerian Nation team to trying to trying to be more swaggy on the court, Silent G deserves the attention he's received -- he's probably going to lead Jim Boeheim's team in scoring this year, among other categories. The experts weight in on the fifth-year senior's draft standing:
Ricky O'Donnell, SB Nation: Michael Gbinije, 29th
"Gbinije is my pick to be the breakout senior of next season. He has a very good feel for the game, nice size for a wing at 6'7 and averaged nearly two steals per game last season. He'll be 23 years old next season, but he can play."
David Gardner, Sports Illustrated: Michael Gbinije, 30th
"...Gbinije kept the Orange together. He does everything well for a guard, and he'll be a breakout player this season."
Well, he's more of a point-forward. But he does a lot of things well at the guard position, too.

US Dept of Agriculture Says Onondaga County, CNY Rank Poorly in 'Natural Amenities' (PS; Fleming)
Central New York, and more specifically, Onondaga County didn't get rave reviews for "natural amenities" by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
On Monday, The Washington Post published the results of the study from 1999 which hasn't been updated since.
The study ranks each county based on six criteria that are fairly static: Warm winters, winter sun, temperate summer, low summer humidity, topographic variation, and water area.
The study defines natural amenities as "a measure of the physical characteristics of a county area that enhance the location as a place to live."
The result? Onondaga County ranks 2,679th out of 3,111 counties in the country for natural amenities. Surrounding counties didn't fare much better: Cayuga County ranks 2,347th, Madison 2,093rd, Cortland 2,404th, Oneida 2,447th and Oswego came in the highest at 1,621st.
Lewis County had the worst ranking in Upstate New York at 2,859th.
Ventura County in California nailed down the highest rating in the country while Red Lake County in Minnesota was the worst place in the country for natural amenities, much to the chagrin of the natives. Minnesotans voiced their disdain for the USDA's study, showing off the state's natural beauty on social media.
The Washington Post pointed out some of the flaws in the study: Death Valley in Inyo County, California ranks 35th in the county ahead of much more hospitable areas across the majority of the county.
