Welcome to Green Monday!

Green Monday is an online retail industry term similar to Cyber Monday. The term was coined[1] by eBay to describe its best sales day in December,[2][3] usually the second Monday of December. Green Monday is defined more specifically by business research organization comScore as the Monday with at least 10 days prior to Christmas. In 2009, $854 million was spent online in the US on Green Monday,[4] with sales in 2011 reaching $1.133 billion.[5] In 2012, Green Monday topped out at $1.27 billion, up 13% from 2011 and the third heaviest online sales day for the season behind Cyber Monday and Dec. 4, 2012 (which had no marketing tie-in), according to comScore.[6]

In 2014, Green Monday online sales grossed a record $1.6 billion, albeit still lower than Cyber Monday's $2.68 billion during the same year.

Mike Hopkins Compares St John's Shooting to Steph Curry (thejuice; Cheng)

Syracuse may have been playing St. John’s on Sunday afternoon, but through interim head coach Mike Hopkins’ eyes, his opponent resembled a team further out west.

The Red Storm went 12-24 from downtown in an 84-72 win over Syracuse on Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

“They were like Steph Curry shots,” Hopkins said.

For one afternoon, at least, the comparison to the best shooter for the NBA’s reigning champion Golden State Warriors wasn’t that far of a stretch, with Federico Mussini hitting 5 of his 7 attempts from beyond the arc. Several of them came from beyond NBA range.

St. John’s easily sliced through the Syracuse zone, threading passes into the short corner and the high post. When the Orange defense collapsed, the Red Storm made SU pay with a barrage of 3s.

Aside from Mussini, Durand Johnson and Amar Alibegovic each converted a triplet of 3-pointers.

“When teams make nine, 10 3s, that’s nor a formula for success,” Hopkins said. “They spaced us out.”

Four Takeaways From Syracuse Loss to St John's (TNIAAM; Burke)

Syracuse suffered a surprising 84-72 loss to St. John'son Sunday at Madison Square Garden, the Orange's third loss in four games. Here are four things we learned:

1. It's possible for the Orange to get beat at their own game

Entering Sunday, it wasn't a secret that arguably Syracuse's biggest strength has been its ability to stroke from 3. The Orange love the 3; they take 25.3 attempts per game. Before Sunday, they were making an impressive 38.8% of those shots.

But SU has also been pretty solid defending the 3. Entering Sunday, the Orange were holding teams to just a 30.3% clip from beyond the arc.

On Sunday, though, the roles were reversed. Not only did Syracuse struggle to hit 3s, making just five of its 26 tries, but it had significant trouble defending the 3.

Against St. John's double-high set offense, SU would often pay too much attention to the high post, which led to St. John's getting several open 3s after one or two swing passes. The Johnnies finished 12-of-24 from beyond the arc, making them far more successful from 3 than any previous Syracuse opponent has been this season.

It's not likely to happen very often, but it's proof that the Orange are at least somewhat vulnerable themselves of getting torched from deep.

2. Free throws continue to be an issue

Syracuse lost by 12 points on Sunday. It also missed 12 free throws. The Orange were in the double bonus midway through the second half, and they often attacked the basket and got to the free throw line. In total, they attempted 31 free throws — 21 of which came in the second half.

"We have to shoot better from the foul line, absolutely," Trevor Cooney said. "We shoot better from the foul line and we're right in the game at the end. It comes down to a basket and I like our chances there."
