Welcome to National Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

Today is National Strawberry Ice Cream Day! The ice cream we know and love today evolved from ancient flavored ices. As early as 3000 BC, people in China served their guests sweet juices mixed with ice or snow.

While fruity ice cream flavors are still popular today, vanilla and chocolate are the clear favorites. According to a survey conducted by the International Ice Cream Association, strawberry is the third most popular ice cream flavor, favored by 5.3% of the population.

Did you know that Dolley Madison served strawberry ice cream at President Madison’s second Inaugural Ball in 1813? Treat yourself to a delicious bowl (or two) to celebrate National Strawberry Ice Cream Day!

Being in the ACC Is a Double-Edged Sword for Syracuse Basketball (DO; Dougherty)

It was a half hour after Syracuse fell to North Carolina on Saturday and Trevor Cooney had to get something off his chest. His team had just dropped to 0-4 in conference play for the first time since 1997. It fell apart late and, again, proved it isn’t good enough to compete for 40 minutes against adequate opponents.

But Cooney wanted to tell everyone that his team’s NCAA Tournament hopes are alive and well.

“In the conference that we’re in, we could go on and we could win a couple games and they’re a lot of ranked opponents,” Cooney said. “You go and beat some teams, you can still get in. It’s not like we’re in a crappy conference where you just have an easy road left and if you win all these games you didn’t really beat anyone.”

Cooney’s unsolicited elusion to “tournament talk” illustrated the position Syracuse has put itself in. Sure, the Orange will continue taking it game by game; Wake Forest, then Duke, then Virginia and so on. But an 0-4 start to conference play forced SU to keep at least one eye on the bigger picture for the rest of the season.

The Orange (11-7, 1-4 Atlantic Coast) finally got in the ACC win column by beating Boston College on Wednesday. And while it’s certainly a start, albeit a late one, that result itself won’t do much for Syracuse in the long term. But the opportunities to start erasing the four straight losses — and defeats to Wisconsin, Georgetown and St. John’s in non-conference play — are all over SU’s upcoming schedule.

Wake Forest's Struggles Start with Defense (journalnow.com; Collins)

Defense, the adage goes, wins championships. Sitting at 1-3 in the ACC, coach Danny Manning of Wake Forest would settle for defense winning his Deacons a game.

Any game, but preferably the next one Saturday at home against Syracuse.

Manning arrived before the 2014-15 season, announcing his intentions to build his program on defense. Yet after finishing dead last in the ACC in field-goal percentage defense (45 percent) last season, the Deacons are again dead last in the conference (again, at 45 percent) in that most telling of defensive statistics.

They’ve also been torched for more than 90 points in two of their conference losses, a 91-75 thumping by Duke at home Jan. 6 and Wednesday night’s 93-91 barn-burner at Virginia Tech.

The Deacons shot 59 percent against the Hokies, but lost by allowing the Hokies to score on 44 of 70 possessions. Sophomore guard Rondale Watson summed up Wake Forest’s defensive efforts in succinct fashion.

“Defensively we were terrible,” Watson said.

The toll could be seen on Manning’s face as he addressed the media afterward. The setback, Wake Forest’s fourth in six games, left the Deacons 10-6 overall going into Saturday’s noon home game against Syracuse.

NCAA Rule Change to Allow Players to Be Test NBA Waters with More Flexibility (nba.com; Vertuno)

College basketball underclassmen will have more flexibility to test their NBA draft status without jeopardizing their eligibility under rule changes approved Wednesday at the NCAA annual convention.

Players will be allowed to enter the draft multiple times and participate in the combine and one NBA team tryout per year. They also will be allowed up to 10 days to withdraw from the draft after the combine

The rule changes, which take effect immediately, were designed to help players make better decisions on their future and keep those who find out they're not ready for the NBA on track for graduation.

NCAA officials said the rule change was offered after collaboration between the NCAA, NBA and that National Association of Basketball Coaches.

"It's really significant for guys who are going to get a better idea on where they stand," Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. "(Some) come out early and it doesn't work out for them. All of a sudden, they're 25 or 26 years old with no career."

The change could impact college recruiting if college coaches must wait longer each year to evaluate their future rosters.

Watch Record Snowfall in CNY's First Big Winter Storm on 2016 (time lapse videos; PS; Hernandez)

With the first winter storm of 2016 under our belts, Central New Yorkers found ways to make the most of the snow. Sleds finally got pulled out, snowmen were built, and wars were waged with icy ammunition. Residents of Kirkville, N.Y.rejoiced at the snowfall in their area.

Eric Snyder, of Baldwinsville, captured the falling snow in his yard from Tuesday at 11:00 p.m. to Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. He had recorded snow falls before, but adding the snowman, yardstick, and clock was a new experiment. With one photo taken every 5 seconds, we can see the smiling snowman being covered in a blanket of frosty flakes.
