Welcome to National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day!

It's National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day! Although it only requires three ingredients (bread, cheese, and butter), grilled cheese is one of the most popular comfort foods in the world. Send a free eCard for National Grilled Cheese Day to spread the word about this holiday!

The Ancient Romans were the first civilization to make a cooked bread and cheese sandwich, but many cultures have invented their own take on this ancient dish. In France, people enjoy Croque Monsieur (a grilled ham and cheese sandwich) while in Switzerland it is customary to melt the cheese and toast the bread separately before combining them. The classic American grilled cheese sandwich emerged in the 1920s when inexpensive cheese and affordable sliced bread became available. It is now a staple in cafés, diners, and school cafeterias across the country.

To celebrate National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich cooked your favorite way and served with a side of tomato soup!

Who Pulled the Plug on the Franklin/Harbaugh Satellite Camps and Why? (pennlive.com; Jones)

...
You know by now about the fire that Penn State's James Franklin ignited in 2014 and that Michigan's Jim Harbaugh spread into an inferno within the last year when they began invading the South as "guests" in camps. It was an energetic and audacious move aimed at exposure for Northern schools in the most fertile talent base in the nation. Others had prepared to follow suit.

How is this a bad thing? It gives all the high school players in the South, many of them poor and without viable means of traveling about the North, a means to meet and assess coaches and programs from places they'd never be able to gauge otherwise.

Well, The Power stepped on this, but good. NCAA Council reps Mitch Barnhart of the Southeastern Conference and Blake James of the Atlantic Coast Conference introduced a measure that aimed to ban such camps outright. And it was approved by a 10-person Council subcommittee on Friday by a tally of 10-5.

The real vote was 6-4. But committee reps from the "Power Five" conference get double-weighted votes. And four of them voted in a power block against the lonely Big Ten. Here's how it shook out for the SEC/ACC proposal with Power Five reps having the double-vote getting an asterisk:

Yea: Barnhart*, James*, Tim Day* (Big 12), Dan Guerrero* (Pac-12), Paul Krebs (Mountain West), Larry Teis (Sun Belt).

Nay: Jim Phillips* (Big Ten), Maggie McKinley (American), Mike O'Brien (Mid-American), Judy Rose (Conference USA).

It is worth noting that the voting went almost exactly by geography and whether the council member was entrenched within the Southern football power structure.

McKinley represents a conference mixed with Northern and Southern schools but she's an associate AD at Cincinnati whose background is in women's sports. Rose is a former women's basketball coach from a non-football school (Charlotte) who only recently began an FBS program. O'Brien and Phillips represent conferences spanning the Midwest and Northeast who are hoping to gain a recruiting toehold in the South.

All of the yea voters, on the other hand, were the opposite.

Guerrero might represent a conference that stretches from the Canadian to the Mexican borders. But he is the AD at UCLA and his base interest is in protecting the SoCal talent stock from interlopers such as Mike Leach at Washington State who have no local recruiting turf.

James is the AD at Miami. He might technically represent the interests of all ACC schools including Boston College, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, whose coaches certainly would welcome the affirmation of satellite camps. But I've written before of the deal with the devil Pitt, SU and BC made when they agreed to join a league whose power is centered in the Carolinas, far from their campuses. This is an example. Remember, the ACC co-sponsored this proposal.

Former SU AD Daryl Gross Pops Up as Candidate for UC Davis AD Job (PS; Carlson)

Former Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross' name has emerged in connection with the open athletic director's job at the University of California-Davis, his old alma mater.

Bob Dunning, a columnist with The Davis Enterprise newspaper, floated Gross' name as a potential candidate for the position, citing his ties to the school and his experience in major college sports. In fact, Dunning pretty much endorses Gross for the job.

The position has been filled by an interim, Teresa Gould, for nearly a year. Gould's husband, Ron, is the current football coach and his job security has been a subject of discussion since the end of last season. Dunning writes that the search for a full-time AD has hit a key moment.

Gross, via text message, declined to comment on the story or discuss his interest in the position.

The success of the former athletic director's decade in charge of Syracuse athletics is a matter of perspective for most Syracuse fans.

Syracuse's non-revenue program success has reached an all-time high, thanks largely to Gross' desire to provide them funding and his hiring of successful coaches. The field hockey and men's cross-country programs won national titles this year, while the men's soccer and women's basketball programs reached the Final Four.

CNY Resident Makes It as Female Professional Football Player (PS; Adams)

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I set foot into Pacific Health Club to meet Danielle Green who plays professional football for a new team called, The New England Liberty.

Green is one tough girl, the kind you're more likely to see in a super-hero film than on the streets of Syracuse. I watched her put herself though the kind of workout that I'm not sure many guys could make their way through.

She first found out about female professional football from a friend and wanting to know more, went on the official site, read about the tryouts for New England, showed up in Massachusetts where the tryouts were held and to her surprise, she made the team.

Green plays running back and line backer but said with a smile that she, "really likes running back because she likes to run people over."

As soon as she found out she made the team, she knew she was going to need a trainer so she reached out to Vinnie Scollo, who works as a performance enhancement coach at Pacific Health Club.
