May-12-Inernational-Nurses-Day-Greetings.jpg

Welcome to International Nurses Day!

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965.

In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a "Nurses' Day"; he did not approve it.

In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.[citation needed] Each year, ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses' Day Kit.[citation needed] The kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.

In 1999, the British public sector union UNISON voted to ask the ICN to transfer this day to another date, saying Nightingale does not represent modern nursing.[citation needed]

As of 1998, 8 May was designated as annual National Student Nurses' Day. As of 2003, the Wednesday within National Nurses Week, between 6 and 12 May, is National School Nurse Day.

SU Football Summer 2016 Defense Preview: New Zone Scheme (onefootdown.com; Murtaugh)

With Dino Babers a lot of people are bullish on the Syracuse offense this fall. However, even with a bunch of starters back on defense the same can't be said for this side of the ball.

Starters Returning: 8/12
Key Losses: DE Ron Thompson, DE Donnie Simmons, DT John Rayman, CB Julian Whigham
Key Returnees: DT Kayton Samuels, LB Zaire Franklin, LB Paris Bennett, LB Jonathan Thomas, LB Ted Taylor, LB Marquez Hodge, CB Corey Winfield, CB Cordell Hudson, CB Juwan Dowels, CB Kielan Whitner, S Chauncey Scissum, S Atwan Cordy
FEI Defense Rank: 105
S&P Defense Rank: 70
S&P Rush Rank: 94
S&P Pass Rank: 112
PPG: 31.0
Turnover Forced: 23

Tweaked Scheme
New defensive coordinator Brian Ward is changing the Syracuse scheme from an aggressive blitzing attack from the linebackers to a Tampa-2 variety that preaches patience and much more zone coverage.

Ward comes over from Bowling Green where he was the DC under Dino Babers in 2015. Prior to that appointment, Ward was the DC at Western Illinois (2012-14) and Drake (2011). The step up to the Power 5 level should be challenging, however, Ward should be excited at the amount of experience returning, especially in the back 7 where the most scheme change is needed.

Shocked in Syracuse; Mark Coyle Blindsides Syracuse (startribune.com; Brackin)

Mark Coyle’s decision to leave Syracuse after slightly more than 10 months as athletic director so stunned that school’s staff that University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler felt compelled on Wednesday to call his Syracuse counterpart, Chancellor Kent Syverud.

The talk, Kaler said, “was a good conversation, considering the positions we were both in.”

Awkward might best describe those respective positions. Minnesota’s search for a new AD was so secretive that Coyle was never mentioned by media outlets among rumored candidates for the job. Syracuse staff members were as surprised as the average Minnesota fan when news broke Wednesday morning that Coyle, who had worked at Minnesota from 2001-2005, was moving back to the Midwest.

“Nobody had an inkling,” former Syracuse football All-America Floyd Little told the Syracuse Post-Standard. Little should have known if anybody did, because he worked for Coyle as special assistant to the athletic director.

“It’s shocking,” Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim told New York media.

Dino Babers, the football coach Coyle hired five months ago, was attending the annual Atlantic Coast Conference meetings when the news broke. According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, Babers was unaware of Coyle’s job switch as he left the meetings, and when informed he responded: “Are you serious? No comment.”

It's a catch-and-release competition with the two- or three-person teams fishing 24-7, wetting their lines for 66 straight hours.

"We have from as far west as Chicago and as far south as Georgia. We also have two teams coming from Canada," said Jason Bernhardt, the tournament director.

The Wild Carp Classic is a catch-and-release competition with the two- and three-person teams fishing 24-7, wetting their lines for 66 straight hours.

Bernhardt said there will be a total of 23 different prize categories. The teams will be assigned to one of two sections by a random draw and the location of their fishing spots, called pegs. They'll fish from the same spot the whole tournament.
