Syracuse Football: Athlon Preseason All-ACC Team Features Estime & Murphy (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Since it's largely a written publication, Athlon gets a jump on college football season preview materials before most. Such is the case with this year's edition, which features some Syracuse Orange players you're pretty familiar with.

On the All-ACC squad, senior Brisly Estime gets second-team honors at punt returner following a season in which he compiled over 900 (kickoff and punt) return yards and two TDs. Kicker Cole Murphy finds himself among the third-team selections after going 16-for-22 on field goals in 2015 (and a perfect 37-for-37 on extra points).

As one might have imagined, Athlon's All-ACC teams are pretty heavy on players from Clemson, Florida State, Louisville and North Carolina. Looking at just the first- and second-team all-conference squads they've assembled, 33 are from those four schools (largely considered the cream of the crop for 2016).

Sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey also receives some honors, getting the cover on this year's Syracuse-specific preview magazine. As we all know, the exciting passer's season was cut short by injury in 2015. But before that, he accounted for 1,639 yards and 16 total scores in just seven full games.

Let's just hope things turn out better for this year's SU cover player than the last two...Ashton Broyld was on the front of last year's edition and was dismissed before the season started. Former Orange quarterback Terrel Hunt was on the cover in 2014, and unfortunately lost much of his season due to a fractured fibula vs. Louisville.

Wake Forest football's goal for 2016: Keep building toward a promising 2017 (sbnation.com; Connelly)

As of now, I see Wake winning seven or eight games in 2017; the goal is to keep that vision intact. This is Bill C's daily preview series, working its way through every 2016 team.

Check out the advanced-stats glossary here. Below, a unique review of last year's team, a unit-by-unit breakdown of this year's roster, the full 2016 schedule with win projections for each game, and more.

1. The long road back

That Dave Clawson and his staff were able to maintain a top-40 defense in his first year was a nice sign, but patience is required when it comes to fixing an offense that was almost too awful for words. That they won a game that was scoreless at the end of regulation -- 6-3 over Virginia Tech in double overtime -- is both apt and misleading; usually when your offense is this bad, the defense gives out.

With only four opponents projected worse than 60th (none after October 1), Wake's win total probably isn't going to improve much. But the defense is experienced enough to maintain form, and the offense has almost no choice to progress. If the Deacs can improve into the 70s or 80s this year, they could be positioned to make the Year 3 surge that Clawson patented in his former jobs.

First things first: Wake Forest's win total did not improve in Clawson's second year. In both seasons, the Demon Deacons took down an FCS opponent (Gardner-Webb in 2014, Elon in 2015), Army (by three points each year), and a similarly offensively challenged ACC opponent (Virginia Tech in 2014, Boston College in 2015). That's impressive symmetry.

You had to squint to see any improvement, but it was there. Clawson's Deacs got blown out less and competed better in conference play -- average ACC score in 2014: Opp 30, Wake 12; in 2015: 27-15. After ranking dead last in Off. S&P+ in 2014, Wake improved to a merely bad 107th.

This is the precise definition of "baby steps," something that matters in the grand scheme but doesn't impress many eyeballs. Still, minor improvement means Wake is still on the Clawson timeline.

Clawson's win percentage (Fordham, Richmond, BGSU) by year:

  • Year 1: 0.400 (10-25)
  • Year 2: 0.389 (14-22)
  • Year 3: 0.529 (18-16)
  • Year 4: 0.725 (29-11)

FS1′s Tim Brando: Notre Dame Will Eventually Join ACC Football, Is Key To Conference Launching Network
(collegespun.com; pod; Lyons)

...
On the ACC Network:

“I do believe it’s going to happen, and I believe it’s going to happen when Notre Dame understands that it’s in their financial best interest to be in a conference, because they cannot command the same dollar from NBC or any other network by simply having seven home games televised. If you look at the revenues generated by both the Big Ten, the SEC, and the ACC without a network, as a conference member full time, they would, not only right now but certainly in the future, do much better than they are doing with their current arrangement. And I think that’s where we sit.”

Brando says that if Notre Dame joins a conference in the next 10 years, the ACC is the only option:

“No, Notre Dame cannot have a wandering eye. They not only signed a grant of rights with the ACC, but they signed an additional contract, which mandates that if they do become a conference member in football, there is no other place they can do that other than the Atlantic Coast Conference. And that’s through the year 2025. So (ACC commissioner) John Swofford and his people did a remarkable job when they brought Notre Dame in, to secure that when the Irish blue bloods decided ‘you know what, maybe it’s time to join a conference,’ they need to do that.”

Ephesus Lighting to expand headquarters in Downtown Syracuse
(localsyr.com)

Ephesus Lighting continues to land big contracts in the sports world and is also expanding its headquarters in Downtown Syracuse.

The company, which already has NFL, NHL, and Major League Baseball stadiums in its portfolio, has now secured its first NBA arena.

Ephesus Founder Joe Casper tells NewsChannel 9, “We hit the grand slam, that's what we keep saying, we've hit the grand slam on all of them."

Despite being acquired by the global power management company Eaton, parent of Crouse Hinds, Ephesus is not only committed to Syracuse it’s growing here.

Ephesus is doubling its workspace in the Onondaga Tower.

Company CEO Amy Casper says, "We are sitting on top of each other here in the office. It's a challenge to make sales calls; it's a challenge to talk to our suppliers and for the engineers to concentrate on their development and design."

While not one of its larger contracts many at Ephesus are excited to be installing their LED lights at the Baldwinsville High School football stadium.

"Lighting the Super Bowl is big but going back home to Baldwinsville to light the High School that to me is really neat to be able to come back and say that's where I went to high school." Joe Casper says.
