National-Golf-Lovers-Day-October-4-e1474388861228.jpg

Welcome to National Golf Lover's Day!

National Golf Lover’s Day is observed annually on October 4. Golf enthusiasts look forward to this day each year.
National Golf Lover’s Day is sometimes also referred to as National Golf Day.

Since 1952, the PGA has held a charitable event each year for National Golf Day, which is held on varying days within the year.

It is believed that the modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland. This is unclear and very much debated as to its ancient origins.

The world’s oldest golf tournament is The Open Championship, which was first played October 17, 1860, at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Syracuse AD John Wildhack holds a key vote on the possible 9-game ACC schedule (report) (PS; Carlson)

Veteran journalist writer David Teel, who has a strong sense of the ACC's pulse, wrote earlier on Monday that momentum is building for a nine-game ACC schedule and that he believes Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack could have a key voice in the ultimate decision.

The league's athletic directors are scheduled to meet in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Wednesday and Thursday. High on the priority list will be deciding whether to switch to a nine-game conference schedule in football, continue with eight games or delay a decision. Switching to a nine-game schedule would require votes from eight (of 14) athletic directors.

Based on previous votes, Teel counts five schools in favor of eight games and six schools in favor of nine. That leaves three unknowns, including Wildhack, who have the potential to swing the conversation.

Wildhack has declined to make his position public since taking over at SU. Under athletic director Daryl Gross, Syracuse favored the nine-game schedule, with Gross expressing a desire to get into major markets and recruiting areas like Miami with greater frequency.

I suggest giving Teel a read to understand all the nuances of the debate, but he reported that that ESPN gave the ACC two options for its future schedule during negotiations over the ACC Network.

The good, the bad, the ugly: Notre Dame vs. Syracuse (nbcsports.com; Arnold)

After a miserable September, the Irish kicked off October in a far more fitting fashion. Their 50-33 win, a much-needed victory after a week of chaos inside the Gug, hopefully served to settle down a program that has had to restructure its coaching staff and revise its goals before the season’s first month was finished.

While it’s a short-term band-aid if there ever was one, the victory gets the program back on course. It makes a bowl appearance more probably than not, and it gives a young Irish roster some positive affirmations.

So before we turn the page on the Orange, let’s take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly.

THE GOOD

Equanimeous St. Brown. Notre Dame’s sophomore receiver is building confidence by the bushel. At least he should be. Because at a position where most expected the W to be the weakness, St. Brown is the Irish’s No. 1 receiver.

That leap was something that some saw coming after hints during a freshman season where St. Brown’s practice exploits were rumored. But a slow spring and the ascent of Kevin Stepherson in the spring had few talking about the sophomore. But with six touchdowns and 541 yards through four games, St. Brown is on track for a monster season.

The Syracuse football team resumes Atlantic Coast Conference competition on Saturday night when it takes on Wake Forest on the road. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Syracuse is coming off a 50-33 loss against Notre Dame on Oct. 1 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. For the fifth straight game, redshirt senior wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark, setting a new program standard. Sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey was responsible for all five touchdowns against the Fighting Irish, as well.

"I think the process is working," head coach Dino Babers said in his weekly news conference on Monday morning. "There are certain things that are not there yet, but those things we will either develop or be brought in. I think when it's all said and done, you guys will like the cake that we're baking. Right now is not the time to eat the batter. Wait for us to bake the cake."

Wake Forest enters Saturday night's contest with a 4-1 overall record. The Demon Deacons are coming off their first setback of the 2016 campaign, losing at NC State on Oct. 8. Prior to its loss against the Wolfpack, Wake Forest was off to its best start since 2006.

"They're a confident team based off of their record," added Babers. "They haven't had a lot of injuries, so they're playing with the same personnel that they started the season with. They're able to work their entire package, the same package since two-a-days. They're a good unit and it's going to be a really tough game."

Syracuse football isn’t projected to win another game this season
(TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange aren’t projected to win another football game this season, at leastaccording to Bill Connelly’s S&P+.

As Connelly’s metrics further incorporate this season’s results (vs. the preseason numbers its initially based on), we’re seeing the defense’s poor results make a larger and larger impact. Following another poor showing against Notre Dame this Saturday, the S&P+ sees that as the norm now and expects minimal to no improvement as the year wears on:
SANDP.JPG

Along with the minimal expectations around the Orange defense, this is also populated by the strength of schedule you’ll notice above. Of the seven teams left, just two are ranked higher than 32nd, and four are 25th or better (including three top-15 squads). Virginia Tech may be the most surprising of those top squads, though the Hokies also just entered the AP top 25 for the first time all season.

Again, this is far from set in stone that Syracuse loses all of these matchups. Those Wake Forest and Boston College games are under a touchdown swing and influenced by them being SU road games. But the overall trends are indicative of the schedule we’ve belabored and the defense we dread watching factoring in more. The schedule’s not changing, though perhaps the defense can at some point?

Syracuse Football: Don’t stay in the car, Dino (TNIAAM; Keeley)

It’s extremely self-indulgent of me to reference an anecdote I wrote in the past as if it’s some kind of standard-bearing notion but I am an extremely self-indulgent person so here we are.

Last year, when Scott Shafer went on his infamous “3-0! 24 year! 3-0! 24 years!” rant, I said that Scott needed to get out of the car. Here’s the gist:

...have you ever been in your car and you've got the music up really loud and you're singing along and everything sounds great? Then, you get out of your car. Maybe you stop at the store to buy food or you run into your house to grab something you forgot. You get back in the car, turn the keys and OH MY GOD the music is so loud! Your ears are bleeding! How is that possible? It sounded normal just a minute ago.

When you were in the car with the noise and the music, that became your normal. It only stopped being normal when you got out and got back in and realized how loud it actually was. And that's what happens to people in Hollywood. They're surrounded by others telling them how great they are. They're sheltered in this bubble where news and messages are filtered for them. They only see the world through the lens they've put themselves behind.

NYSDOT should offer alternatives for I-81/I-690 interchange (Your letters)
(PS)

To the Editor:

On behalf of the homeowners of the Mission Landing Condominium, thank you for your recent editorial that brought clarity to the concerns and unanswered questions about the "Interstate 81 Common Features" that were expressed by Franklin Square and North Side residents, business owners and institutions at theopen meeting recently held at the Samaritan Center.

The New York State Department of Transportation has focused the public discussion on replacement of the viaduct south of the I-690/I-81 interchange; numerous alternatives for that part of the project have been reviewed. North of the interchange no alternatives have been proposed for the "Common Features" despite requests by homeowners and others during the scoping phase.

Significant investments have been made over the past 25 years to revitalize Franklin Square and the North Side. The DOT's failure to provide alternatives to its Common Features indicates to us the lack of a commitment to sensitively and creatively integrate this project into the existing urban fabric. The Common Features, especially the "missing link" connections, widening of I-81 through the North Side, relocating the Butternut Street bridge and rebuilding a high-speed interchange, will negatively impact our neighborhoods in much the same way the viaduct affected neighborhoods to the south 50 years ago.

Huh? Well unless they are getting them back this week their starting QB and RB are still out with injury.

But strippers are still welcome in the Louisville AD so please contact Coach Pitino asap if you're able to offer such services .
