Welcome to Plan Your Epitaph Day!

Dedicated to the proposition that a forgettable gravestone is a fate worse than death. You too can be in a league with --

William Shakespeare:

"...Curst be he that moves my bones."

and W.C. Fields:

"On the whole, I'd rather be in Philadelphia."

Syracuse explores new ticket model as student attendance dwindles nationally (DO; Gutierrez)

Syracuse Athletics officials last year zeroed in on creating a point system for student attendance at sporting events. Then-athletic director Mark Coyle and his chief deputy headed collaborative meetings with key student leaders to discuss the possibility.

But with the university’s third athletic director in as many years, the process has grown internal with the athletic department pursuing the idea — on its own accord.

“With Coyle, we knew we were going to make the move to some sort of point system,” Otto’s Army President Johnny Oliver said. “The change of leadership has derailed the whole process.”

The idea of a point system is very much alive. By the start of next football season, SU Athletics hopes to adopt such a program, which incentivizes students to attend athletic events through prizes. SU Athletics is exploring a point system because of its success at other Power 5 schools, said Anthony Di Fino, SU’s associate athletics director for business development.

“It’s a priority for us that we get the point system up and running for our students, especially if we go to a student activity fee,” Di Fino said. “It’s just a matter of implementation.”

Jason Emerich's Syracuse football career ends after shoulder surgery (DO; Mettus)

Jason Emerich’s season and Syracuse career are over, Syracuse Athletics announced Tuesday afternoon. The starting center injured his shoulder on Sept. 9 against Louisville and underwent surgery on Oct. 11.

Emerich, a redshirt senior, broke into SU’s starting lineup in Week 3 of 2015 and started every game through SU’s loss to Louisville in Week 2 this season. In the first half of the Louisville game, Emerich, at times, held his shoulder and slumping it to one side as he ran down the field. He finished out the game. He wore a brace when he was on the sideline in following games and did not play after the Louisville loss.

He’ll finish his career with 28 games played and 14 starts across three seasons. Emerich was named to the watch list for the nation’s best center prior to the 2016 season.

Redshirt freshman Colin Byrne has taken over center duties in Emerich’s place.

Former Syracuse football player Naesean Howard's lawyer misses hearing for trespassing charge (DO; Schwedelson)

Former Syracuse football player Naesean Howard’s lawyer didn’t show up to a brief hearing for his trespassing charge on Tuesday afternoon. The hearing was pushed back to a not yet determined date.

When Judge Kate Rosenthal asked Howard who his lawyer is, he said did not know the answer.

Irene Aurora Flores previously represented Howard, who is in custody. A person who answered the phone at Flores’ office on Sept. 29 said Flores was no longer Howard’s lawyer.

Howard will have another court hearing for his first-degree assault charge, punishable of up to 25 years in prison, on Monday at 2 p.m.

Rosenthal said, “this is the least of your problems,” in regard to the trespassing charge.

The assault charge came as a result of Howard allegedly stabbing former teammates Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield at a South Campus party on April 16. Anthony Aloi is the judge in the stabbing case.

After being arraigned for that charge, Howard unlawfully remained on Syracuse’s campus, causing the trespassing charge.

Howard was dismissed from SU’s team in 2014.

Swinney: Syracuse a really dangerous team (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

In advance of this Saturday’s game between the Syracuse Orange and Clemson Tigers, CU coach Dabo Swinney spoke with local media. He chatted about last week’s win over Florida State, but more importantly for us, he had some things to say about the Orange. We take a look at those quotes below:

“Syracuse, a dangerous team. Really dangerous. I have a lot of respect for their staff. You can tell that the team has responded. It's a first-year staff. It's very easy if you watch them from the beginning to see how those guys have bought in. They're energized and have played with tremendous effort. They're dangerous. They play incredibly fast. Their quarterback is tough and instinctive. They have one of the top three or four receivers in the country.”
Why thanks, Dabo. would have to agree with all of that. You can see the visible change in this group from week one to now as they continue to buy into what Dino Babers is selling.

“Schematically, they present a lot of problems. A lot of run-pass options, tempo, freeze-counts; they probably freeze 30 or 40-percent of the time. They are averaging less than two seconds and the ball is out of there. They want to throw the ball. They also run effectively but they force you to spread out and play with a great tempo.”

Cuomo to make announcement Wednesday during stop at NYS Fair (PS; Sturtz)

Gov. Andrew Cuomo will make a stop Wednesday at the New York State Fair to make an announcement.

The governor's office did not say what the announcement was about, but Cuomo has two events scheduled earlier in the day Wednesday in Rochester.

Cuomo is scheduled to speak at the Empire Room at the fairgrounds at 12 p.m.

Cuomo's visit comes two months after the 12-day New York State Fair opened following $50 of ongoing renovations. The governor proposed the $50 million project in 2015 and state lawmakers approved the funding in last year's state budget.
