Welcome to National Bundt Day!

National Bundt Day, also known as National Bundt Cake Day is observed every year on November 15. As people across the United States are planning their menu for the upcoming holidays, a bundt cake is sure to be on the list at least once.

A bundt cake can be any cake baked in a Bundt pan, forming it into a distinctive ring shape. The mold of the Bundt pan was originally inspired by the traditional European fruit cake known as Gugelhupf. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that cookware Nordic Ware popularized the style for the mold design and trademarked the name Bundt. Nordic Ware started producing Bundt pans made from cast aluminum. Similar pans are sold as “fluted tube pans” or other similar names.

Due to the difficulty frosting a ring-shaped cake, bundt cakes are typically served undecorated, glazed or dusted with powdered sugar.

In the beginning, the Bundt pan did not sell well, and Nordic Ware considered discontinuing the product. Then in the 1963 New Good Housekeeping Cookbook, the Bundt pan was mentioned, and sales increased. In 1966, sales increased dramically when a Bundt cake called the “Tunnel of Fudge”, baked by Ella Helfrich, took second place at the annual Pillsbury Bake-Off and winning a $5,000.00 prize. The publicity from the Bake-Off resulted in more than 200,000 Bundt pan requests.

Five Takeaways From Jimbo Fisher's Syracuse Press Conference (seminoles.com; Linafelt)

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher met with the media Monday to recap Friday’s win over Boston College and look ahead to Saturday’s visit to Syracuse (3:30 p.m., ABC/ESPN2). Here are highlights from that conversation.

1) Updates on DeMarcus, Deondre, Derwin
Let’s start with the good news: Both DeMarcus Walker and Deondre Francois are fine after apparent injuries suffered on Friday.

Walker, FSU’s sack leader with 11, was seen wearing a boot toward the end of Friday’s game, but Fisher said that was only precautionary. And Francois, who sat out the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury, should be good to go as well. Fisher said he could have gone back in, but the game was already in hand and the Seminoles wanted reserve Sean Maguire to get some work.

Now for the not-so-good news: Fisher confirmed what he said on his radio show last week, which is that sophomore safety Derwin James (knee) will miss the remainder of the regular season. James has not yet been ruled out for FSU’s bowl game.

“It would have to be a bowl game, if he comes back,” Fisher said. “We’ll have to wait and see what the timetable is with him.”

2) Another change on the offensive line
Rick Leonard
, who started four games at right tackle at the beginning of the season, will be back at that post on Saturday.

The switch comes after Brock Ruble, FSU’s right tackle for the last six games, suffered a groin injury against Boston College.

QB Eric Dungey getting second opinion on injury (TNIAAM; Gilberg)

Syracuse Orange starting quarterback Eric Dungey is getting a second opinion on his injury, head coach Dino Babers told the media on Monday.

"They were going through tests and now they're going through secondary tests," Babers said. "They're getting a second opinion on stuff. So we've got to wait for the second opinion and we've got to wait to see what that doctor says."

Dungey was held out of Saturday’s 35-20 loss to NC State after previously being listed as questionable on Thursday’s injury report. Dungey was knocked out of Syracuse’s loss to Clemson on Nov. 5 after suffering a hard hit to the head-and-shoulder area during the final minutes of the first quarter. He was taken into the locker room for an evaluation before returning to the sidelines and watching the remainder of the game in street clothes.

Babers, once again, declined to clarify the specifics regarding Dungey’s injury and his original diagnosis, but did confirm the sophomore quarterback has not been medically cleared to practice – he only attended practice last week, he was not cleared to participate.

Babers said after Saturday’s loss to NC State that Dungey is “probably doubtful” for this week’s matchup against No. 17 Florida State.

Dungey missed four games last season due to two separate concussions. While Dungey did suffer a hard hit to the head-and-shoulder area, the fact he was able to return to the sidelines afterwards – in a loud and bright environment – is a positive sign he did not suffer his third career concussion, but rather an injury to the shoulder area.

With so much uncertainty surrounding Dungey’s health and availability for Saturday’s game against Florida State, Babers opted to list Dungey, Zack Mahoney and Austin Wilson as co-starters at quarterback on this week’s depth chart.

Even with Dungey behind center, taking down Florida State would have been a daunting task, without him, the chances of Syracuse pulling off an upset appear to be bleak at best.

Questionable penalties, near-misses for Syracuse football (photographer's view) (PS; photo gallery)

It was Military Appreciation Day. You can never thank the military enough for their sacrifice. Last week Clemson honored our women and men in uniform. This week it was Syracuse's turn. Unfortunately we can't parachute people thru the Dome roof. This photo has a nice quiet feeling to it.

Jimbo Fisher expects Deondre Francois, DeMarcus Walker to play at Syracuse (orlandosentinel.com; Deen)

Jimbo Fisher expects quarterback Deondre Francois and defensive end DeMarcus Walker to play in Florida State’s game at Syracuse on Saturday.

Fisher insisted Monday that both players “will be fine” after suffering injuries in the Seminoles’ most recent win against Boston College.

Francois, who helped FSU jump out to a 28-0 lead with three touchdown passes, left the game after bruising his throwing shoulder on a late hit that resulted in a Boston College roughing the passer penalty.

Fisher said Francois could have returned to action, but wanted to get fifth-year backup Sean Maguire some work in the 45-7 victory.

“He’s fine,” Fisher said of Francois. “On the field he said ‘I’m fine,’ but we pulled him out.”

Walker, a senior leader who is ranked third nationally with 11 sacks this season, has been walking around with a protective boot on his left foot.

Walker is currently tied with Bjoern Werner and Jamal Reynolds for fourth in school history with 23.5 career sacks. Earlier this season, he became the third Seminole ever to notch double-digit sack seasons.

Fisher also said backup Rick Leonard will start at right tackle in place of Brock Ruble, who is dealing with a groin injury.

Leonard replaced Ruble in the second half of the Boston College game.

-Fisher said the Seminoles are preparing to face Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey, but coach Dino Babers declared Dungey as “probably doubtful” for the game.

How’s it looking for Syracuse to go bowling at 5-7? (TNIAAM; Keeley)

The goal is for the Syracuse Orange to win both of their final games this season, finish 6-6, and automatically qualify for a bowl game. The reality, however, is that a scenario like that is unlikely.

Syracuse hosts No. 17 Florida State this upcoming weekend and then travels to Pitt, who just knocked off formerly-undefeated Clemson, and could possibly be angling for the ACC Coastal Division crown.

Especially considering the team will probably be without Eric Dungey for at least one more week, it seems very unrealistic that this team can win-out. Even the idea of this team splitting the remaining games seems questionable.

But let’s just say they do. They either shock the Seminoles in the Dome or steal a win from Pitt. What chances does Syracuse have at 5-7 of qualifying for a bowl game under the APR rules?

Chris Carlson broke down the field of teams vying for the 80 available bowl spots. Right now, 58 teams are already bowl eligible. There are 20 teams currently with five wins and five of them would beat out Syracuse head-to-head in a tiebreaker. Of the teams in Syracuse’s position, in need to two more wins, there are 17 of them. As Carlson breaks it down, there are currently 83 teams ahead of SU in terms of wins and tiebreakers. That means if everything remains constant and the Orange do win another game, they probably won’t go bowling.

But, we all know that college football is weird. It’s entirely possible. The teams with APR tiebreakers over the Orange that we need to keep an eye on include North Texas (4-6), Notre Dame (4-6), Vanderbilt (4-6), TCU (5-4), Duke (4-6) and Boston College (4-6).

FSU vs. Syracuse Prediction, Game Preview (campusinsiders.com; Miller)

When: Saturday, Nov. 19 – 3:30 p.m. ET
Where: Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
TV Broadcast: ABC/ESPN2

The Seminoles (7-3, 4-3 ACC) put together their best performance in conference play of the season last week in a home win over Boston College. Jimbo Fisher’s squad took control by scoring on its first two drives and led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter of an eventual 45-7 victory.

Meanwhile, the Orange (4-6, 2-4) managed to gain only 218 total yards in a 35-20 home loss to NC State last Saturday. Dino Babers’ squad was held to just 28 yards on the ground and 190 yards through the air playing without sophomore quarterback Eric Dungey, who was hit in the head/shoulder area during the first quarter of a 54-0 loss to Clemson the previous week.

In last year’s meeting between these teams in Tallahassee, Sean Maguire passed for 348 yards and three touchdowns while Jacques Patrick added three scores and 162 yards on the ground in a 45-21 win. Travis Rudolph had five receptions for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

What To Know About FSU
The Seminoles were getting used to playing from behind a lot in ACC play, but that finally changed last week when they jumped on Boston College from the get-go. In their previous six conference games the ‘Noles had scored first only once and had trailed by double digits in five of them. Dalvin Cook rushed for 108 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown, while Deondre Francois tied a season high with three touchdown passes in the win over the Eagles. Francois finished 16-of-24 through the air for 183 yards, but the redshirt freshman suffered a bruised shoulder late in the third quarter and did not return. Fisher told local media on Monday, though, that Francois is fine and could have returned but he wanted to get Maguire some work.

Syracuse Orange vs. Florida State Seminoles - 11/19/16 College Football Pick, Odds, and Prediction - Sports Chat Place (sportschatplace.com; Jett)

Florida State enters this week’s game with a solid 7-3 record on the season. The Seminoles are fresh off a 45-7 shellacking of Boston College in their game this past Friday. In that one, Seminoles QB Deondre Francois played a shortened game due to the score and to injury (his shoulder; he’s expected to be fine) but still came up with 183 yards and three touchdowns. Calvin Cook also sat out the fourth quarter of the blowout, but still provided Florida State with 18 carries for 108 yards and a TD.

So far this year for the Seminoles, Francois holds 2675 yards 15 touchdowns and four picks, while Cook leads the rush with 214 carries for 1242 yards and 13 scores. The big Florida State receiver this year is Travis Rudolph, who has 44 receptions for 680 yards and five touchdowns.

As for Syracuse, they’re entering play here with a 4-6 record after a 35-20 loss to ACC neighbors North Carolina State in last Saturday’s game. In that one, Syracuse QB Zack Mahoney went 13-of-24 for 190 yards, a TD and an interception, while Dontae Strickland led an anemic rushing attack with 12 carries for 28 yards and a touchdown.

Eric Dungey is still the Orange’s top passer on the year with 2679 yards, 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Strickland leads the Syracuse rush with 132 carries, 484 yards and three touchdowns, while Amba Etta-Tawo is tops in receiving on 78 catches for 1242 yards and eight scores.

Supermoon rises over Syracuse (photos) (PS; photo gallery; Nett)

Monday's full moon is the biggest, closest and brightest supermoon of this year.

It's the closest supermoon since Jan. 26, 1948. The moon won't come this close to Earth again until Nov. 25, 2034.

From Earthsky: "Astronomers call this sort of close full moon a perigee full moon. The word perigee describes the moon's closest point to Earth for any given month."

These pictures appear in sequence taken from Onondaga Park in Syracuse.

November's full moon is most commonly referred to as the "Beaver Moon."
