Welcome to Beer Can Appreciation Day!

Beer Can Appreciation Day celebrates that great day in 1935 when beer was first sold in cans.

Okay, laugh if you will. But, believe me when I say that Beer Can Appreciation Day is a big and important day to many people.

A lot of people do not know that there's a huge number of beer can collectors out there. Collectors meticulously open a beer can from the bottom, empty it (and drink the beer, of course), then wash and dry it. For beer can collectors, there is no shortage of types of beer, cans and bottles, and sizes. A beer can collector may have hundreds of cans and bottles.

Syracuse football recruiting: 3-star JUCO defensive end Brandon Berry commits to SU (PS; Bailey)

Junior college defensive end Brandon Berry committed to Syracuse football on Monday night, he told Syracuse.com via Twitter direct message.

Berry has had his heart set on the Orange since mid-December and made the decision public after a visit from SU head coach Dino Babers, defensive coordinator Brian Ward and defensive line coach Vinson Reynolds.

"I've been committed, it just wasn't out," Berry said. "It was between me and the coaches."

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Highland (Kan.) Community College prospect is rated three stars and the No. 11 weak-side defensive end in the JUCO ranks this cycle by 247Sports.com's composite rankings. He has four years left to use three years of eligibility.

Berry, who was also offered by Minnesota, CSU, Toledo and Charlotte logged 48 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, 11.5 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries and a forced fumble last season. He is originally from Griffin (Ga.) High School.

Berry will take an official visit to Syracuse this weekend. He becomes the 22nd member in SU's Class of 2017. That group includes two other defensive ends in Zach Morton and Jonathan Kingsley and two JUCO signees in tight end Ravian Pierce and linebacker Ryan Guthrie.

Syracuse football recruiting: 3-star OL target Alex Palczewski commits to Illinois (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football offensive lineman target Alex Palczewski announced his commitment to Illinois on Monday night.

The Prospect (Ill.) High School senior chose the Fighting Illini over other finalists SU and Vanderbilt.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound Prospect High School senior is rated three stars and the No. 114 offensive tackle in the Class of 2017 by 247Sports.com's composite rankings. He visited each of his three finalists over the last two weeks before making his decision.

The Orange's Class of 2017 currently sits at 22 members, including four signees. That group includes two offensive linemen in signee Patrick Davis and pledge Dakota Davis.

The remaining 18 prospects are expected to sign national letters of intent on Feb. 1.

Syracuse football commit Chris Elmore could contribute immediately at H-back (PS; Bailey)

Chris Elmore was picking up his luggage at Hancock International Airport on Friday when a Syracuse football fan approached him and asked a question.

"Are you here for football?"

He was, at the time set to begin his official visit. And by the end of the weekend, Elmore decided SU would be his home for the next four years.

He strengthened relationships with co-offensive coordinator Sean Lewis and tight ends coach Reno Ferri, bonded with visiting commits and was hosted by fellow Chicago native Aaron Roberts, Syracuse's starting left guard last season.

Slippery conditions in Upstate NY after winter storm dropped ice, then snow (PS; Coin)

A tricky-to-forecast snowstorm ended bringing more freezing rain and less snow that expected to Upstate New York, and that means deceptively slippery conditions this morning.

"You have a situation where you have a layer of ice and then snow on top of that, and that can be quite hazardous," said Mark Pellerito, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Binghamton. "It can catch people really off guard. They'll walk out saying, 'It's only a few inches,' and all of the sudden they slip."

Snow continues to fall across much of Upstate New York and is expected to taper off this morning. Winter storm warnings have been downgraded to winter storm advisories, which cover virtually all of Upstate. Most expire at 1 p.m.
