Welcome
to Clashing Clothes Day!

A fellow who’d constantly clash
And wear clothes that appeared to be trash,
Attended a party
Quite retro and arty.
His clothing “designs” were a smash.

What to expect on National Signing Day next week (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Next week is the official turning of the calendar from one college football season to the next. We’re of course talking about National Signing Day.

The Syracuse Orange, as you’re aware, have seen improvement on the recruiting front this cycle under Dino Babers, and now we get to cross our fingers that all of those players make it to campus on Wednesday.

Players will be faxing in their National Letters of Intent starting early Wednesday morning, and we’ll be covering each official signing as they happen. Four players from this class are already on campus, too. So while Patrick Davis, Nadarius Fagan, Ryan Guthrie and Ravian Pierce are all part of the 2017 class, they’ve already signed -- no drama to be had!

What else can we expect come this time next Wednesday? A primer on a few things to look out for:

COMMITMENTS

The most obvious one. As of right now, 18 players should be sending NLIs next Wednesday, bringing the class total to 22. There are still some other targets out there, so we could see some names added to the list, since there’s room on the roster. There’s also the possibility we see some decommitments and flips at the 11th hour (like Rashad Smith going from SU to FAU last year) — but hopefully not!

The names you’ll be on the lookout for all day:

Very early W-L projections for SU football in 2017 (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Week 1: Central Connecticut State Blue Devils
CCSU was not good last year, which means they’re a smart FCS team to play. The 2-9 Blue Devils will be at a talent and speed disadvantage, which will only get worse for them as the game continues. Win likelihood: 98%

Week 2: Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
Everyone’s tempted to just call this a win, but there are a couple factors that weigh against SU. Scott Shafer will be making his return to the Carrier Dome, and you can’t just run MTSU off the turf in any case. The Blue Raiders ran things at a similar speed to the Orange last year, which means Dino Babers will have to identify another inefficiency to beat them. Still, they should win this one. Win likelihood: 70%

Week 3: Central Michigan Chippewas
CMU’s turning over some talent this offseason (including long-time quarterback Cooper Rush), so this could potentially be a blowout in the making. Adding some fuel to that fire is the fact that the Chippewas’ dirty late hit in 2015 started our concerns about Eric Dungey and potential concussion effects in the first place. Please score 50 on them, Dino. Win likelihood: 85%

Week 4: at LSU Tigers

Let’s get this out of the way: Syracuse isn’t winning this game. It’s LSU, on the road, probably at night -- where opposing teams go to die. New Tigers offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s familiar with how to beat the Orange as well (from both NC State and Pitt), potentially negating any advantage SU’s pace could pose. Just enjoy the tailgating and a weekend in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Win likelihood: 8%

Week 5: at NC State Wolfpack
Oof. If this game was at home, and maybe on a different part of the schedule, it would be very easy to buy into this one as a win. But stacked right on top of another road game (at a tougher opponent)? It’s not necessarily as simple. The Wolfpack probably take this one, but put it firmly in the category of swing game. Win likelihood: 40%

Report: Miami running back Gus Edwards denied transfer to Syracuse (silive.com; Hart)

Apparently, Gus Edwards and Syracuse University are destined never to join forces.

The former Tottenville HS standout, who just finished his redshirt junior season with the University of Miami, will reportedly not be allowed to transfer to the Orange, his team of choice.

The story was first reported by the CuseNation.com website and later confirmed by the Palm Beach Post.

Edwards, who totaled 11 touchdowns as a true freshman and sophomore before missing his junior year with a foot injury, had asked Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt to release him following a 2016 campaign in which he only made one start and scored one TD.

In August, Richt stated in a press conference reported on by FootballScoop.com that "I have unconditionally released every guy that ever wanted to leave. I'd call the commissioner (of the conference) and say, 'Hey, if the kid wants to go...let him go wherever he wants to go.'"

But Miami's decision to prevent the 6-foot-1, 230-pound Edwards to go to ACC rival Syracuse contradicts Richt's August statement.

"Institutionally, our policy has been that we would not do that for a school we're going to play in the upcoming season," Miami athletic director Blake James told the Palm Beach Post.

Syracuse Football: Amba Etta-Tawo Is Getting Ready For The NFL | FOX Sports (foxsports.com; Edsen Jr)

The lone Syracuse football representative at the Senior Bowl is Amba Etta-Tawo. Here’s a scouting report, what to look out for, and more.
The first face of the Dino Babers brand is Syracuse football star Amba Etta-Tawo. He holds the keys to being the next Orange star in the NFL. But before we get there, his next step starts this week for the Senior Bowl.

I Spoke to a scout who’s in Mobile, Alabama all this week for Senior Bowl practices and asked him about Amba Etta-Tawo’s draft stock and what he can achieve this week.

“He’s just got to continue showing what he’s shown all year. I got to see him live this year when they played at MetLife against Notre Dame. I came away very impressed. He came into the game with a lot of hype and some productive games early on. At Maryland we were waiting for this guy to do something and it never materialized for whatever reason.”

That for me is the toughest questions he’s going to have to answer this week at the Senior Bowl. There’s no debate, he was a one-year wonder here at Syracuse.

94 receptions, over 1,400 yards, and 14 touchdowns. All of those metrics surpassed his career totals with the Terps. Teams are going to ask what went wrong at Maryland. I have little doubt that he’s going to be a combine warrior.

Etta-Tawo is going to test very well. He measured in already at (6’1 198 pounds) at the Senior Bowl. A little small, could use a little more beef on the sandwich. But he doesn’t want to jeopardize his speed.

Upstate NY lake effect snow watches upgraded to warnings; 3 feet possible (newyorkupstate.com; Coin)

Just hours after issuing a lake effect watch for parts of Upstate New York, the National Weather Service has bumped them up to a warning.

From 1 p.m. Thursday until 7 p.m. Sunday -- what the weather service calls a "long-lasting event" -- up to 3 feet of snow could fall in the hardest-hit areas of Tug Hill and southwestern New York.

One warning is for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties, with the highest amounts expected on the Tug Hill plateau and Oswego County. A second warning has also been issued for Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Wyoming and southern Erie counties.

Light snow will start during the day Thursday, but the storm ramps up as colder air blows in Friday.

"This will lead to storm totals of more than 3 feet in the areas of most persistent snows," the warning said.

Winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of up to 35 mph, will create low visibility and dangerous driving conditions for several days.

After a relatively warm January, temperatures drop to below normal by the weekend, with highs only in the 20s Saturday and Sunday.

Winds will keep the heavy snow north of the Thruway in Central New York, the weather service said.
