Welcome to National Letter of Intent Day for Football!

The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a document used to indicate a student athlete's commitment to participating National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) colleges and universities in the United States. The NCAA Eligibility Center manages the daily operations of the NLI program while the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) provides governance oversight of the program. Started in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions, the program now includes 676 Division I and II participating institutions. There are designated dates for different sports, and these dates are commonly referred to as "Signing Day".

Division III institutions are specifically banned from using the NLI, or any similar document that is not executed by non-athletes at those institutions.[1]

NLIs are typically faxed by the recruited student to the university's athletic department on a National Signing Day.[2] The NLI is a voluntary program with regard to both institutions and student-athletes. No prospective student-athlete or parent is required to sign the National Letter of Intent, and no institution is required to join the program.

Syracuse football needs quarterback Eric Dungey to make a bowl in 2017 | FOX Sports (foxsports.com; Wieder)

Syracuse football has made just three bowls in its last 12 years. To make one in 2017, they’ll need a healthy, productive Eric Dungey for all 12 games.

Second-year Syracuse head coach Dino Babers installed his high-octane offense in 2016, but it yielded similar results to the Orange’s 2015. The operator of his vaunted offense, sophomore Eric Dungey, took steps forwardm but injuries cut his season short. Babers will be in a better spot with Dungey in the starting lineup for the entire season.

Dungey is an electrifying playmaker that improved on his 2015 season. He increased every single significant statistical category this year, including raising his sub-60 percent completion percentage to 64.8. He’s shown accuracy and an ability to throw accurately on the run. He went 4-4 during starts that he finished. It was a much better mark from his 2-5 record in 2015.

The increase in accuracy was key considering he was in an offense that saw its last passer Matt Johnson complete 67 percent of his passes. Dungey will have two more years to sit in that same system and build on his career.

Orange Watch: The Syracuse football connection to the Super Bowl - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: With Super Bowl LI Sunday evening at Houston’s NRG Stadium (6:30 p.m. ET / FOX) pitting New England against Atlanta, the top line Syracuse connection to the game, and the player many eyes within Orange Nation will be focused on is number 93 in the Falcons red jersey, 15 year veteran and former SU first-team All American defensive end Dwight Freeney (1998-2001). About to make his third Super Bowl appearance after both winning (Super Bowl XLI-2007) and losing (Super Bowl XLIV-2010) the sport’s ultimate game with the Indianapolis Colts, and starting for the Falcons as recently as their NFC Championship game victory over Green Bay to advance, Freeney not only seeks another championship ring but as a 2000s all-decade DE selection among the NFL media, another title would also solidify his standing for future enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Can you guess the first Super Bowl in which a former Syracuse football player competed?

It was the famous New York Jets upset victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969, in which Colts tight end John Mackey (1960-62) caught three passes in a losing cause.

Mackey, a Hall of Fame inductee in 1992, also became the first ex-Orange player to score in the Super Bowl when he caught a famous 75 yard touchdown pass in Super Bowl V from Johnny Unitas (Hall of Famer) via a deflection off both his teammate Eddie Hinton and Dallas defensive back Mel Renfro right into his hands, and raced 45 yards untouched to the end zone in the Colts eventual 16-13 victory.

In Schenectady, a new casino (opening next week), attracts new craft breweries (PS; Cazentre)

Two new craft breweries are coming to Schenectady, attracted in part by the soon-to-open Rivers Casino & Resort and the related Mohawk Harbor development.

Meanwhile, a craft brewery called Great Flats Brewing Co. is aiming to open at 151 Lafayette St. next month. That would be a brewery, not a brewpub, but would have a tasting room. Owner Harry Whalen told the Daily Gazette he had plenty of good reasons to choose downtown Schenectady for a brewery, but acknowledged the casino project is one of the attractions.

"This looks like Schenectady has got it going on these days," Whalen told the Gazette on Jan. 17. Great Flats will produce American, German and English-style beers, he said.

Schenectady already has one brewery, the Mad Jack Brewing Co. at the Van Dyck restaurant, and some notable beer bars, including the Bier Abbey and a Wolff's Biergarten.

Druthers will bring its combined restaurant/brewhouse concept to the Mohawk Harbor site, which is located along the river north of downtown. It will be in the project's Riverhouse apartment complex off of Erie Boulevard, not in the casino itself, which has other restaurant tenants.
