Welcome to Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day is a traditional holiday celebrated on February 2 every year.
That’s today – happy Groundhog Day!

What does Groundhog Day mean and where does it come from?
According to folklore, if the weather is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on February 2, then spring will come early that year.

If it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and head back inside – and winter will continue for another six weeks.

Syracuse adds 24 on National Signing Day in Babers’ 1st recruiting class (DO; Gutierrez)

A little after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, class of 2017 Elite 11 quarterback Tommy DeVito inked with Syracuse, kickstarting SU’s National Signing Day. Over the next several hours, 24 players total signed with the Orange. SU head coach Dino Babers addressed the media Wednesday afternoon, celebrating his first recruiting class and confirming SU will continue to recruit in Florida and Canada and explaining that the class’ No. 11 rating among conference schools doesn’t say much.

Here are five takeaways from the day.

DeVito channels Denzel Washington

When DeVito committed to SU, he ranked with two stars by most major recruiting services. Now, the four-star signal-caller is SU’s top-rated signee. He declined offers from Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Wake Forest, among others, and ranks among the country’s top high school players. Despite teams’ efforts to recruit him, the New Jersey native stayed pledged to Syracuse since verbally committing last April.

“He was kind of like Denzel Washington in the movie ‘Glory’ when he was holding that flag at the end,” Babers said. “Everybody was taking bullets, but he just handled that flag, held onto that ‘S’ and kept waving. He’s a lot better than what everyone else evaluated him out to be.”

Earlier in the day, DeVito appeared on ESPN2 at the network’s headquarters in Connecticut. He said he doesn’t plan on redshirting, even with junior quarterback Eric Dungey and senior quarterback Zack Mahoney likely in the depth chart.

Report: Private university DI FBS football players are employees, NLRB states (DO; Fortier)

Football players for private universities at the highest level — including Syracuse — are employees, the National Labor Relations Board reportedly stated this week. Inside Higher Education first reported the news.

The decision doesn’t force any of the 17 private universities in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision to pay its players, according to a memo obtained by Inside Higher Ed and sent by NLRB’s general counsel, Richard Griffin. But it does protect those players’ rights to campaign as employees under the National Labor Relations Act, including the ability to ask for pay without fear of retaliation.

“Representation for the players is a great thing,” said Sean Hickey, a former Orange offensive lineman now with the Minnesota Vikings. “I’ve been in those locker rooms. I’ve seen this industry, professional and college, and it’s very cut-throat. Syracuse protects the rights of the students and all, but it’s a business and coaches would always say, ‘This is your job. This is your job. This is your job.’ Well then it should be protected as such.”

SU Athletics was not immediately available for comment.

The memo chips away further at the enamel of the NCAA’s concept of amateurism. In October 2016, the NLRB ruled that private institutions have no right to limit its athletes’ use of social media and that they were employees. The NCAA issued a statement in response, according to the Los Angeles Times, rejecting that its athletes are employees.

Traffic alert: 'Behemoth' turbine headed for PA could cause delays across CNY (PS' Maddox)

A "behemoth" turbine will be making its way across Central New York this week as it heads for its final destination in Pennsylvania, potentially causing travel delays along certain roads, the New York State Police warned today.

Over the next week, a large, 187-ton General Electric turbine will be transported by truck from a Schenectady plant to Pennsylvania, troopers said.

It is expected to arrive in Cazenovia today (Wednesday), be in Homer by Thursday, and hit the Ithaca area by Friday, they said.

Roads affected:
  • Route 20 crossing into Onondaga County from Cazenovia
  • Apulia Road
  • Route 80
  • Route 281 crossing into Cortland County
  • Route 222 crossing into Tompkins County
  • Salt Road
  • Peruville Road
  • Route 34 crossing into Tioga County
The turbine is expected to pass through Pompey and Tully in Onondaga County; Preble, Homer, and Cortland in Cortland County; and Ithaca in Tompkins County, officials said.

Because of its size, it is hard to determine exactly where the transport vehicle will be during the day, authorities said. They warned drivers to be on the lookout for the giant truck and should try to find different routes if they see it in the area.
