Welcome to Pay-a-Compliment Day!

What a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day or to give credit for a job well done! Give an extra compliment on National Compliment Day which is observed annually on January 24.

A compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child, or validate someone’s hard work. A compliment not only improves the receiver’s mood, but it also says something about the giver. It tells them you noticed. Whether we recognize someone’s achievement or their classic style, a compliment can go a long way.

To give a great compliment, first be sincere. People have a way of knowing when we are fake. If you don’t mean it, it’s worse than getting a thoughtless birthday gift.

Editor's Note: You are good looking, intelligent and your posture is top notch too!

The Top Returning Wide Receivers In The ACC (fanragsports.com; Shanahan)

The ACC does wide receivers, too. Dynamic wideouts were one reason the ACC supplanted the SEC as the nation’s top football conference in 2016.

7 – Steve Ishmael, Syracuse

In 11 games, Ishmael caught 48 balls for 559 yards and one touchdown. With leading receiver Amba Etta-Tawo (94 catches) having graduated, Ishmael (6-2, 210) will be targeted more as a senior in 2017. He has 114 career receptions for 1,544 yards in three seasons with 26 starts.
...

...
2 — Ervin Phillips, Syracuse

Phillips (5-11, 176), who earned All-ACC honorable mention, caught 90 balls for 822 yards and six touchdowns. Phillips started two games as a freshman, eight as a sophomore and all 12 last year. He has 15 career touchdowns. His receptions per game of 7.5 were second in the ACC to teammate Amba Etta-Tawo, who has graduated.

1 — Ahmmon Richards, Miami

The 6-2, 197-pounder started 11 of 13 games and set a Miami freshman record with 934 receiving yards, a total that led the team. He was second in reception with 49 yards, averaging 19.1 per catch with three touchdowns. Richards totals included three 100-yard games with a season high of 142 at Appalachian State. He had receptions of 60 and 62 against App State, but his season long was 77 against Virginia. His 117 yards against North Carolina State bumped his season total past Michael Irvin’s 31-year-old freshmen school record.

Dwight Freeney on OT loss to Patriots: ‘Mind-boggling’ (fox59.com)

In the end–and this very well might have been the end of a decorated career–Dwight Freeney was left shaking his head in utter, absolute disbelief.

“Mind-boggling,” he said. “Mind-boggling. We had our opportunities. We basically shut ’em out in the first half. If we make just one more play in the second half, it’s a different story.”

But the story Sunday evening at NRG Stadium was one for the ages.

In either the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history (Patriots version) or greatest choke-job ever (Falcons version), New England wore down Freeney and Atlanta in the fourth quarter, then stunned them 34-28 in the Super Bowl’s first overtime.

“It’s tough to put into words just how bad you feel after a game like this,” Freeney said. “I’ve been on both sides, so I know.”

During an 11-year career with the Indianapolis Colts, Freeney celebrated when they handled the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI and suffered when they were turned away by the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. The third time–Super Bowl LI–was anything but a charm. It was crushing.

TNIAAM Super Bowl Open Thread (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

As you’re well aware, Super Bowl XLI takes place this evening between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons.

Now, I don’t have to tell you that you’re rooting for the Falcons. You know this already. I mean, if it wasn’t enough that former Syracuse Orange star Dwight Freeney plays for Atlanta, your alternative is the Patriots. Enough said.

Some of you may be from the New England area, so you’re stuck with that team and fan base and all. There are also various SU connections to the Pats coaching staff, if you really want to dig further. I get that. But counter: Really, you’re rooting for the Patriots?

Thankfully, the Pats fans among this group at least have one thing going for them, as they’re also Orange fans.

So no matter who you’re rooting for (again, that should be the Falcons), at least root for Freeney, who could be playing his last game as a pro for all we know, to have a good game.

All I ask is that we’re civil to one another in the comments during and after the game, please. Despite the -talking above (like many of us, I am a Giants fan after all), we should be able to have a good time and just enjoy this. Together.

Super Bowl 2017: Lady Gaga drops the mic on Super Bowl LI halftime show (PS; Smith)

Lady Gaga doesn't just perform. She puts on a spectacle unlike anything few musicians could ever imagine.

In that sense, Gaga is the most ideal of current pop performers to take the stage during a Super Bowl halftime show; something she sought to prove during the midpoint of Sunday's Super Bowl LI.

Gaga kicked things off on top of the opened roof of NRG Stadium's dome singing "God Bless America." She then flew through the air (with cables attached) singing her biggest early hit "Poker Face," backed by explosions and a light extravaganza.

To be honest, her moves in the air were a bit awkward (cable slack, people!). From there, Gaga let her hair down and hit the stage with her group of dancers for a version of "Born This Way."

Anyone who's seen Gaga's live shows knows that the performance fell in line with the showcase she typically delivers on tour, colorful wardrobe, pyrotechnics and all.

Next it was onto her catchy dance hit "Telephone." And no, Gaga's duet partner on the song, Beyonce, did not make a cameo (Oh, what could have been). Gaga continued her hits parade by grabbing a keytar for her performance of "Just Dance."
