Welcome to Curling is Cool Day!

A Scottish game developed in the 1500’s that the Canadians seem to be exceedingly good at- if Winter Olympic Games are anything to go by- curling involves launching a stone on ice and sweeping the ice in its path as it attempts to land on a target and dislodge your competitors’ rocks. But wait, there’s more. The sweepers wear special shoes, one that slides and one that doesn’t, and the stone is more like a 40 pound granite bomb that looks suspiciously too much like a macaroon. The brooms are slightly more evolved now than the ordinary sweepers they used back in the 1900s. In fact, they’re hardly reminiscent of a witch’s broom, at all. The floors are sheets of ice with vinyl markings underneath, for the target, rather than the frozen lake surfaces that were used back in the day. The concept, though, is very much the same. You launch, you sweep, and you score.

VT's Babcock talks arena upgrade, more premium football seats, ACC Network revenue (dailypress.com; Teel)

Premium seating on the east side of Lane Stadium and extensive upgrades to Cassell Coliseum are Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock’s top priorities as he anticipates the next university-wide capital campaign in late 2018 or early 2019.

During a wide-ranging interview in his office Tuesday evening, Babcock also addressed:

# Football season-ticket renewals.
# Fan reaction to the Hokies’ new priority seating plan for football and men’s basketball.
# Progress on the Hokie Club’s ambitious drive to more than double membership.
# His contract extension and raise.
# Future ACC revenue.
# His recent appointment to the NCAA baseball tournament selection committee.

Commissioner John Swofford, media consultant Dean Jordan and ESPN’s distribution team updated the ADs on revenue projections, the network’s essential component. The ACC’s most recent federal tax return, for 2014-15, showed an average per-school distribution of $26.2 million, but with the Southeastern Conference projecting $40 million-plus per school in fiscal 2015-16, and the Big Ten about $50 million in later years, the ACC is behind.

Babcock declined to share numbers, but Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox told FSU’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday that the conference hopes for $8-10 million more per school in the network’s first year, $15-20 million more thereafter. This according to the Noles247 website.

“We typically talk about what other conferences are doing,” Babcock said, “and where we’re positioned well and where we have some catching up to do. … We don’t mind overachieving and doing all we can to win, but I wouldn’t mind (SEC- and Big Ten-level money) every year just by opening the mail, and hopefully the channel will give us the upside to do that. …

@DavidTeelatDP reports on ACC Network and potential revenue numbers look very good. » All Sports Discussion (allsportsdiscussion.com)

As has been the case during the whole ACC Network development process, news comes out in bits and pieces but usually in flurries. News has been coming the last 2 weeks.

The ACC’s most tied in writer @DavidTeelatDP has some news on the ACC Network’s potential revenue numbers, and the projections should make the ACC and it’s fans feel very good.

Here is Teel’s latest piece.

Florida State athletic director Stan Wilcox told FSU’s Board of Trustees on Wednesday that the conference hopes for $8-10 million more per school in the network’s first year, $15-20 million more thereafter. This according to the Noles247 website.

And from that Noles247 site…

Florida State athletics director Stan Wilcox said the ACC’s revised television deal will deliver an increased payout of $3 million in the 2017-18 fiscal year.

So as it was once speculated, the ACC will receive a increase payout prior to the network being launched. When you are talking projections there is the possibility to inflate numbers. That’s why they are projections, but these numbers are very encouraging. The ACC appears to be very well positioned for the future.

2017 Way-Too-Early ACC Storylines | InsideTheACC (sportswar.com; Morgan)

The Atlantic Coast Conference is home of the 2016 College Football Playoff Champion Clemson Tigers. They beat arguably the best team in college football when they took down Alabama in the title game. However, you can’t assume that past glory will yield positive future results. With that in mind, which three teams are likely to dominate the conference next year?

Can Syracuse Take a Big Step in 2017?

It may seem ludicrous to declare that Syracuse is going to be among the best teams in the ACC next year. They have road games against Florida State and Miami as well as game against LSU before they start conference play. However, Dino Babers has shown that his offense can put up points against almost any team. If Eric Dungey is healthy, Syracuse could be a surprise contender well into November.

Louisville Should Be Back Next Season

With Deshaun Watson and Brad Kaaya moving onto the NFL, Lamar Jackson is the main event in the ACC in 2017. They will play Clemson in their third game of the season, which could mean that whoever is playing quarterback for the Tigers isn’t experienced enough to deal with what Louisville can bring on defense.

A soft slate of games outside of the conference should help them pad their record and perhaps stay in contention to be a playoff team next year. In 2017, they play teams such as Murray State and Kent State that won’t pose much of a challenge unlike Houston did in 2016.

Can Clemson Retain Their Atlantic Title?

CNY's 50 all-time greatest high school football players, in order (PS; Webb & Weidner)

Who are the best high school football players to ever come out of Central New York?

We’re talking home-grown, Central New York, Section III players.

We consulted more than a dozen current and former area coaches and sports writers. We pored over record books, all-state teams and Hall of Fame resumes.

We recognized not only high school performances, but what the players did in college and, in many cases, pro football and beyond.

We settled on an impressive collection of 50 of the greatest football players to come out of the Section III area. We ranked them in order.

We know there'll be disagreements over who we included or left off and where they’re ranked.

That's where the fun is. Let the debates begin. Let us know what you think in the comments section below or send us an email to hssports@syracuse.com
