Welcome to National Cereal Day!

Strange that the invention of breakfast cereal was founded on the fact that the American diet of the mid 1800's was a poor one packed with protein, booze and caffeine. Or maybe it’s not so strange. After all, cereal was considered a remedy – a sort of 19th-century health or wonder food for the ailing masses.

So if you’re raising a milk-sopped spoonful of oats or bran or wheat today, give a little nod to
National Cereal Day, which honors this classic morning meal and midnight snack on March 7.

Syracuse Football Signee Nadarius Fagan adds Size, Speed at LB (itlh.com; Carey)

One of Syracuse’s most coveted commits in the class of 2017 is Nadarius Fagan. The linebacker from the sunshine state is already enrolled at Syracuse and is looking to become familiar with the Orange’s defense.

As a junior in high school, Fagan led all of Miami-Dade county, one of the major recruiting hotbeds for high school football in tackles. In his junior campaign at Miami Southridge high, Fagan complied an astronomical 141 tackles.

As a result of Fagan’s high school production, he is one of the best recruits Syracuse has got in years.

The Orange beat out many big time schools for Fagan’s services. The 6-foot-2 205-pound linebacker had offers from Alabama, Nebraska, and USC. Fagan cited Syracuse’s drama school and overall academics as his reason for choosing Syracuse. Let’s break down his tape:

One of the first things that jumps out to you is Fagan’s downhill aggression and running. At the :15 second mark, you see him explode to the line of scrimmage. Fagan takes on an offensive lineman, sheds the block and brings down the running back for a loss of yards.

ACC spring football primer: Power Rankings, key questions (si.com; Staples)

The ACC, home to two of the past four national champions, felt especially top-heavy when Florida State and Clemson re-emerged in the early part of this decade as the league’s best teams. While the Seminoles and Tigers have continued to dominate, the rest of the league has gotten deeper in an attempt to catch them. The Coastal Division still feels wide open, but instead of being stocked with mediocre teams, it’s got contenders such as Pittsburgh who can beat the eventual national champ on the road and still not win the division. Meanwhile, the Atlantic Division title isn’t guaranteed to run through Tallahassee or Clemson. Louisville returns a Heisman Trophy winner, and NC State will have one of the nation’s best and most experienced defensive lines.

It used to be an insult to be ranked near the middle of the ACC. Come November, the seventh best team in the ACC might still find itself in the top 25.

ACC Spring Power Rankings
  • 1

    FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES
    2016 RECORD: 10–3
We’ll know how the Seminoles’ national title aspirations stack up when they face Alabama in the season opener in Atlanta. But before they worry too much about a national title, they need to worry about reclaiming the ACC in a year when the league feels deeper than ever.
  • 2

    CLEMSON TIGERS
    2016 RECORD: 14–1
The defending national champion could have the nation’s best defensive line in 2017, but the Tigers have a lot to replace on offense. After Clemson loses QB Deshaun Watson, WR Mike Williams and RB Wayne Gallman, which new names will produce the points?
  • 3

    MIAMI HURRICANES
    2016 RECORD: 9–4
Mark Richt has the U moving in the correct direction, but it’s still too early to determine whether this will be the year the Hurricanes finally break through in terms of beating Florida State or winning an ACC title.

NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS
2016 RECORD: 8–5
The Tar Heels must replace their quarterback, top three rushers and top two receivers. Considering the improved depth of the league, this is a tough year to have to rebuild an offense.
  • 12

    SYRACUSE ORANGE
    2016 RECORD: 4–8
The Orange got better in their first year under Dino Babers. Will a unique offense become a true differentiating factor this year?

Derek Jeter teams up with former Syracuse football star Tim Green to write book (PS; Poliquin)

After deciding that he needed a little bit of help in the writing of his 35th book, the subject of which is baseball, Tim Green turned to a guy who knows a little bit about the national pastime.

Derek Jeter.

Yeah, that Derek Jeter.

Tim Green and Derek Jeter have teamed up on a new book.

The book, the latest in Green's line of literature for young readers, is called "Baseball Genius." It's about a kid on a 13-and-under team who uses his gift of being able to predict the kind of pitch a pitcher will throw to help save the career of an aging New York Yankee.

Who better, then, to help Green take his readers behind the scenes of the Yankees than Jeter, who played shortstop for New York across a brilliant career that lasted 20 seasons before retiring (with a lifetime batting average of .305) in 2014?

Thus, Green has a co-author in Jeter. Together, they developed the main character of "Baseball Genius," Jalen DeLuca, and named him after Jeter's real-life nephew.

Green -- the former Syracuse University All-American football player, eight-year NFL veteran and College Football Hall of Fame inductee -- will appear with Jeter, live, on the Wednesday edition of "CBS This Morning." They will be interviewed about their collaboration on "Baseball Genius" during the 8 o'clock hour.

"Baseball Genius," the first in a trilogy of baseball books to be co-authored by Green and Jeter, is scheduled to be released today. It is a product of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing and retails in hardcover editions for $16.95.

Syracuse basketball players sweep final ACC weekly awards; Battle, White honored (PS; Moses)

A Hollywood writer and director wants to turn a former Liverpool school building into a film school.

Jeremy Garelick, who is known for his work in the "The Hangover," "The Break-Up" and "The Wedding Ringer," wants to turn the former A.V. Zogg Middle School into the Liverpool School of Cinema, according to the proposed school's Facebook page.

Garelick will host a community meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the former school building, which is located at 800 4th St., in the village of Liverpool. Garelick will give a presentation and plans to explain how the film school will benefit local residents and businesses, according to the Facebook event.

Garelick couldn't be reach for comment.

The two-story building, which sits on a 6.9-acre property, was built at Hickory and Fourth streets in 1928 to house Liverpool's first stand-alone junior-senior high school. The Liverpool Central School District closed Zogg Middle School, as it was then named, in 1981 and used it for a time as its administrative offices.

The district sold the building in 2003 to the Liverpool Community Church for $5,000. The church renovated it and used it as offices and classrooms until 2013.

The 89-year-old building sold in August 2014 to Pramote Nakornthab, of Ithaca, for $1.1 million. Nakornthab sold the building to Kriangkai Suriyawanakul for $1 in December 2014, according to Onondaga County Real Property Tax Services.
