Welcome to Panic Day!

Try to stay calm. Take a deep breath. For today is Panic Day. Can you handle today? Good, we were worried for a moment.

Hopefully, everything is going just swell in your life, and you have no need for this day. But, if problems and troubles are looming, try to hold off hitting the panic button until this day arrives.

Don't worry. Don't fret. and, above all, don't panic. However, if ever there was a day to panic, today is that day.

As you get through this unsettling day, you have another day to worry about....International Panic Day.

Phil Steele: Syracuse has one of toughest 2017 college football schedules (PS; Axe)

Syracuse University football head coach Dino Babers will have to overcome one of the toughest schedules in in the country to get Orange Football back on track in 2017.

That's according to college football insider Phil Steele, who ranked the schedules of all 130 FBS teams.

Steele says Syracuse has the sixth-hardest schedule in the country in 2017.

Steele used a methodology that combined opponents' records from the previous season, teams that played the most teams that had winning records last season, opponents that faced teams that made the postseason in 2016 and opponents that finished in the AP Top 25 last season.

6. Syracuse Orange: Opponents' 2016 record: 95-60 (61.29%); opponents with a winning 2016 record/made postseason/finished in Top 25: 10/11/5

The top 5 includes UMass, LSU, East Carolina, South Carolina and Tulane.

Chandler Jones' new contract worth more than $80M (cardswire.com; Root)

The Arizona Cardinals had some big free agency news on Wednesday when the report came out the team and franchise tagged linebacker Chandler Jones were finalizing a five-year contract. All the reports said it was going to be big money.

It actually is a little less than expected, honestly. According to Jason La Canfora, the deal is worth a total of $83-$83 million over the five years, with more than $50 million in guarantees.

When Chandler Jones deal is signed, he'll make over $16M/season, ($83-$84M for 5 years) w/over $50M guar. Monster deal

— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 8, 2017

While this is a huge deal, it is less than what Olivier Vernon got a year ago with the New York Giants. After 8.5 sacks with the Miami Dolphins in 2015, he got five years, $85 million and $52.5 million in guarantees.

Jones had 11 sacks in 2016 for the Cardinals and 12.5 the season before as a member of the New England Patriots. Vernon had 7.5 in 2016.

Between the production and Vernon’s deal, it should be considered a surprise Jones took less money than that.

Frigid weekend ahead for Central New York (PS; Montreuil)

A blustery, snowy, and above all bitterly cold weekend is in store for Central New York.

Similarly to last weekend, an arctic air mass will settle over Central New York on Saturday. Unlike last weekend, this weekend will have stronger winds, a longer period of lake effect snow, and Sunday will not turn out much warmer than Saturday.

Lake effect snow will be ongoing in and around the Syracuse area Saturday morning. A widespread spray of flurries with embedded areas of heavier squalls will gush off Lake Ontario and should persist throughout most of the day.

The strong winds may actually help keep the lake effect somewhat disorganized. That, combined with frigid temperatures, should help keep snow accumulations to a few inches at most.

The wind will be a problem in and of itself though. With gusts over 40 mph possible throughout the day and temperatures only topping out in the mid teens, wind chills across Central New York will be near or below zero throughout Saturday. During the morning hours, wind chills of -10 degrees or even a bit colder will be possible.

In addition to the cold wind chills, the wind will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow and could lead to some sporadic power failures.

The wind will lessen some Saturday night, but still may gust to 30 mph on Sunday. The lake effect snow should lessen Saturday night as well before coming to an end by the midday hours on Sunday.
