Welcome to Smoke and Mirrors Day!

Deceit! Deception! Celebrate these and all other types of trickery with Smoke And Mirrors Day, the festival dedicated to the art of fraudulent cunning.

The phrase “It’s all smoke and mirrors’ refers to the way in which magicians use all manner of distraction to make sure the audience fails to see what’s really going on. The more complex the artifice, the more successfully the magician will get away with it. The most obvious example of smoke and mirrors is ‘Legalese’, that incredibly convoluted language that lawyers use to make sure that no-one else understands what’s happening. Politicians have been known to try that sort of thing too.

How best to celebrate this auspicious day? Go back to its roots! Try a bit of magic. There are lots of easy magic tricks that will amaze your friends. Or, just see how quickly you can make a piece of cake disappear!

Syracuse Football: Eric Dungey has His Work Cut Out for Him (itlh.com; Peelman)

Syracuse Football WR Amba Etta-Tawo graduated. So where does that leave Syracuse and its receiving corp? Inside the Loud House looks at the impact it will have on starting QB Eric Dungey.

Syracuse football has been a pretty decent team the last two years when quarterback Eric Dungey has played. We have not won most of those games, but not all the blame should fall on him. Syracuse lacks the talent around him to truly have a winning program.

Last year, Dungey benefited from the incredible grad-transfer from Maryland, Amba Etta-Tawo. He passed for 2679 yards in nine games to go with 15 passing TD’s, six rushing TD’s, and 7 INT’s, according to ESPN.com. Of those, at least half those yards went to Etta-Tawo. Another 800 or so yards went to Ervin Phillips. After that, the receiving corps hardly caught anything.

So who’s left that’s coming back this year at the WR, TE, or RB position? Here’s a list of the best returning receivers from last year, how much they caught through the air, and what class they’ll be in next year:

Syracuse Spring football practice - new coach Justin Lustig

Syracuse makes hiring of D-II Coach of the Year official (nbcsports.com; Taylor)

Dino Babers‘ second coaching staff is whole once again.

Following up on reports that first surfaced late last week, Syracuse confirmed in a press release that Justin Lustig (pictured, left) has left his job as the head coach at Div. II Edinboro (Pa.) College to take over as Babers’ running backs coach. Additionally, Lustig will serve as special teams coordinator for the Orange.

Lustig replaces Mike Hart, who left earlier this month to take the running backs coach job at Indiana.

“The job Justin did as a first-time head coach was fantastic,” Babers said in a statement. “He’s also been a highly-successful assistant coach. The running backs he has coached have performed extremely well, and his special teams units have consistently ranked among the nation’s best. We’re very excited to welcome Justin and his family to Syracuse.”

Hired in January of last year, Lustig took over an Edinboro team that finished 0-11 in 2015 and turned them into a 9-2 squad one year later. For that turnaround, he was named the Div. II Coach of the Year.

Lustig’s last job at the FBS level came at Ball State, where he served as running backs coach/special teams coordinator from 2011-15. He also earned the title of assistant head coach prior to the start of the 2015 season.

This will mark Lustig’s first job of any kind at a Power Five program.

“My family and I are excited, honored and grateful for the opportunity to come to Syracuse and join Coach Babers’ staff,” Lustig said. “He is building a championship program there. The future of Syracuse football is very bright and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Virginia Cavaliers 2017 Spring Football Preview (athlonsports.com; Staley)

Bronco Mendenhall and the Cavaliers enter the spring with plenty of work to do after going 2-10 last season

It was a rough first season in Charlottesville for Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall in 2016. The Cavaliers finished 2-10 overall and in last in the ACC Coastal Division with a 1-7 record. To add insult to injury, Virginia suffered a season-opening 37-20 loss to Richmond from the FCS ranks.

Mendenhall knew the Cavaliers job would be a tough rebuild because of the lack of talent former head coach Mike London left, but he might not have envisioned it being this difficult.

With Virginia set to open spring practice, Mendenhall will look to lead the program in a positive direction. To get there, there are several areas that will need to be addressed prior to the spring game on April 29.
