Welcome to National Crayola Crayon Day!

Friday is National Crayon Day and Crayola says it will mark the occasion by retiring one of its colors.

Crayola says the announcement revealing which color is getting retired will be livestreamed on Facebook on Friday morning.

On Facebook, news of the impending color retirement brought suggestions as to which colors it should or shouldn’t be. Others lamented that Crayola is retiring a color at all.

Syracuse QB found a purpose far greater than football – Rochester Business Journal (rbj.net; Pitoniak)

It’s been said there are no coincidences in life, only destined experiences. Keith Downing can vouch for that. Two decades removed from a decision that affected him profoundly, the former Fairport High and Syracuse University quarterback has come to realize he was destined to pursue a higher calling than signal-calling; that he was meant to make a career as an M.D., not a QB.

Sure, Downing occasionally wonders what he might have accomplished on the football field had then-SU coach Paul Pasqualoni named him rather than Donovan McNabb the starting quarterback before the 1995 season. He would have welcomed the challenge of keeping the Orangemen’s bowl streak alive and maybe even garnered an invitation to an NFL training camp. Alas, that was not to be. But Downing didn’t stay down long after that fateful depth chart was released. Even he could see that McNabb was a special talent who gave Syracuse the best chance to win.

“Things worked out the way they were meant to,’’ said Downing, a surgeon who teaches in the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. “We all made out quite well as far as realizing our dreams.”

That they did. McNabb went on to establish himself as the greatest quarterback in Syracuse and Philadelphia Eagles history. Kevin Johnson, who was in a three-way battle for the SU quarterback job, converted to wide receiver and played seven seasons in the NFL. And Downing has made a name for himself, specializing in reconstructive female pelvic surgery.

“I stay in touch with a bunch of the guys, and a handful of us try to get together at least once a year,’’ he said. “We’ve shared many of life’s seminal moments. We’ve been to one another’s weddings, things like that. It’s neat to see where everybody has landed. You connect on LinkedIn, and you see that they have good careers and families. That was a special group.’’

Syracuse University sports top 25 all-time greats: No. 4 Ernie Davis (video) (PS; Poliquin)

After much study and contemplation, we at Advance Media New York have compiled a list of the "Top 25 Most Noteworthy People in the History of SU Athletics" -- a daunting task when you consider that the Orange has competed in one sport or another since at least Nov. 23, 1889, when Syracuse lost its first-ever football game to the University of Rochester, 36-0.

Thousands of players and coaches have contributed to SU's celebrated sports heritage over the years, and so many of them have made Central New York proud of their accomplishments both in and out of the arena.

While this video series is meant to honor the best of the Orange's best, we acknowledge the many accomplishments of those scores of other worthy candidates who didn't make our cut. With that in mind, we continue with No. 4 in our rankings -- Ernie Davis.

2020 Florida RB/DB Don Chaney Offered by Syracuse University (youth1.com; Popadines)

Syracuse University has offered a scholarship to 8thgrade (class of 2020) running back/defensive back, Don Chaney. The news was first reported by At their request, this network is being blocked from this site.

Chaney is a 5’11, 170 pound athlete that attended Belen Jesuit Prep in Miami, Florida. Last week he was named the Belen Jesuit middle school athlete of the year.

His offer is just the latest in an increasing trend of pre-high school athletes earning scholarship offers. Before Chaney’s offer, Virginia 8th grader Blake Corum picked up his second and third scholarship offers from Toledo and Rutgers University.

Recruiting podcast: On Syracuse exploiting inefficiencies, and Miami’s staying power (sbnation.com; Elliott)

The SB Nation College Football Recruiting Podcast returns with another episode. This week we are joined by SB Nation’s Richard Johnson, who traveled to Syracuse to produce an exclusive: Dino Babers is here to ‘strike fear into defensive coordinators’.

It’s an excellent piece, and Johnson was able to spend 90 minutes with the Syracuse head coach. We discuss the piece, and the recruiting background, because we don’t want to just repeat what is in the piece. The podcast is available here, and embedded below.

Topics are listed roughly in the order that they appear in the show.

  • Babers’ time at Baylor.
  • The Syracuse head coach is a big fan of Broadway musicals and an even bigger fan of movies.
  • How Babers came to run his version of the offense.
  • What unique challenges and advantages does Syracuse present when paired with the offense Babers runs?
  • Market leaders v. market exploiters — figuring out what the elite programs around Syracuse value in recruiting, and seeing what the Orange can do to exploit the inefficiencies in that supply chain.
  • Syracuse can recruit with the ability to be the most pass-heavy team Northern team due to the climate-controlled dome.
  • What does a successful tenure look like for Dino Babers at Syracuse? Babers turns 56 in July.
  • The air-raid system has a history of having huge leaps forward in Year 2. But how will that balance with the lack of depth for Syracuse, and the brutal schedule that includes FSU, Clemson, LSU, Louisville, and Miami?
  • Syracuse could see recruiting benefits just by playing some elite schools tough.
  • The promise of QB recruit Tommy DeVito and the potential of 2019’s schedule.
  • What got cut from the piece that listeners should know about?

Syracuse hires Dave Boller as director of player personnel (DO; DiStrurco)

Syracuse has hired Dave Boller to be the new director of player personnel, SU athletics announced Thursday afternoon in a press release. Boller will also work with the Orange on identifying and attracting high school recruits.

Boller was most recently at Louisville, where he was the director of high school relations. He was also the Cardinals’ NFL liaison and director of on-campus recruiting.

“Dave has a tremendous eye for talent,” SU head coach Dino Babers said in a press release. “He was in the NFL for a long time. That experience, those contacts, and the knowledge he gained by being in a college setting, will only help us get better.”

Boller is a former NFL scout with 13 years of experience, working with the New York Jets, then-St. Louis Rams, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also assisted the Detroit Lions’ front office.

Boller’s career began at Arizona State, where he worked as the director of football operations. Both Boller and Babers worked together at ASU from 1985-1986 before Babers left for Eastern Illinois.

10 Reasons Why NU's Student Section Deserves Your Vote (huskers.com; York)

If you’ve never heard of the National Collegiate Student Section Association (NCSSA), you have now, and guess what? Your connection to and action for Nebraska’s student section can help the Huskers win another national voting poll.

The latest opportunity for Big Red fans to prove There Is NO PLACE like Nebraska is at your fingertips right here, right now. Nebraska leads the Final Four collegiate fan bases in a nationwide #LoudAndProud voting competition. The Huskers have 39 percent of the Final Four voting, followed by UNO (34 percent), Buffalo (18 percent) and Florida (10 percent).

Voting continues until midnight Friday night to determine the final two programs that will compete in the third annual #LoudAndProud voting that will begin Saturday, April 1, at 6 p.m. and continue until midnight EST on Tuesday, April 4. The University of Arizona won the inaugural #LoudAndProud competition in 2015, and the University of Florida won last year.

The N-Sider has 10 reasons why Nebraska should be favored to win the 2017 competition. The primary evidence is the creative spirit in the top photograph and in others featured below.
...

...
Torrey Ball, a former Syracuse football player who is now Nebraska’s director of Marketing and Student Engagement, told the N-Sider that Big Red fans everywhere can elevate the Huskers’ student section and enable another winning national poll.

Ball works directly with Nebraska’s student section and is confident the Huskers can outvote the other three Final Four candidates in the NCSSA’s annual #LoudAndProud competition – the University of Buffalo, the University of Florida and the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Ball credits the Iron N Club, which has a mission to unite UNL’s student body and support Husker athletics to create the ultimate home advantage for all Nebraska teams.

Emmert: NCAA will decide next week whether to return to NC :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsports.com; Russo, AP)

NCAA leaders need a few days to digest the new law that will replace North Carolina's so-called "bathroom bill" before deciding whether to bring March Madness and other championship sporting events back to the Tar Heel state.

As for other potential political hot spots, such as Texas where lawmakers are considering a similar bill and where the Final Four will be next year, the NCAA is in no rush to weigh in.

A few hours before NCAA President Mark Emmert gave his annual pre-Final Four news conference Thursday, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper signed a bill that rolled back HB2. The law had required transgender people to use public bathrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate. It also excluded gender identity and sexual orientation from statewide antidiscrimination protections.

The law prompted the NCAA, NBA, Atlantic Coast Conference and other businesses and popular music acts like Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam to pull out of North Carolina.

Winter weather alert for Central NY for snow, freezing rain (PS; Coin)

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for much of Central New York from Friday morning to Saturday morning.

One to 4 inches of snow are possible in higher elevations of Oneida, eastern Madison, Otsego and Delaware counties. Ice as thick as a quarter-inch is possible throughout Madison, Oneida, Chenango, Otsego and Delaware counties.

"Snow, sleet and freezing rain will develop early Friday morning and change to mainly freezing rain later in the morning before mixing with or changing to rain in the valley locations in the afternoon," the advisory said. "Precipitation will change back to a sleet/freezing rain mix Friday evening and mix with snow by Saturday morning."

Temperatures will hover around freezing, so the elevation will be especially important in determining where rain and sleet fall.

An inch or more of rain is expected across Upstate New York, and a flood watch is in effect for parts of Central New York and the Southern Tier.
