Welcome to Hug a Newsperson Day!

April 4th is National Hug a Newsperson Day (formerly National Hug a Newsman Day). Each year this day gives everyone the opportunity to say “thank you” and hug their local newsperson.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary tells us that the word “newsman” dates back to 1596. They have been working hard for many years to bring us the news from around the world.

HOW TO OBSERVE

If you aren’t able to hug your newsperson, you can send them a virtual one. Use #HugANewspersonDay to post on social media.

Syracuse University sports top 25 all-time greats: No. 10 Dick MacPherson (video) (PS; Poliquin)

After much study and contemplation, we at Advance Media New York have compiled a list of the "Top 25 Most Noteworthy People in the History of SU Athletics" -- a daunting task when you consider that the Orange has competed in one sport or another since at least Nov. 23, 1889, when Syracuse lost its first-ever football game to the University of Rochester, 36-0.

Thousands of players and coaches have contributed to SU's celebrated sports heritage over the years, and so many of them have made Central New York proud of their accomplishments both in and out of the arena.

While this video series is meant to honor the best of the Orange's best, we acknowledge the many accomplishments of those scores of other worthy candidates who didn't make our cut. With that in mind, we continue with No. 10 in our rankings -- Dick MacPherson.

Ranking the ACC’s Toughest Non-Conference College Football Schedules in 2017 (athlonsports.com; Fortuna)

...
1. Florida State

Sept. 2 vs. Alabama (in Atlanta)
Sept. 9 vs. ULM
Nov. 18 vs. Delaware State
Nov. 25 at Florida

FSU-Alabama on opening weekend? It’s tough to envision a more intriguing Week 1 game in recent memory. The Noles’ season-ending trip to Florida is nothing to sneeze at, either, considering Bama and UF have met in the SEC Championship Game in each of the past two seasons.

2. Georgia Tech

Sept. 4 vs. Tennessee (in Atlanta)
Sept. 9 vs. Jacksonville State
Sept. 16 at UCF
Nov. 25 vs. Georgia

The Yellow Jackets get a pair of SEC East teams and, for good measure, travel to UCF, which experienced one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation last season under first-year head coach Scott Frost. JSU, meanwhile, is consistently one of the best teams in the FCS. (Whose top half is regularly better than lower-end FBS programs.)

3. Pitt

Sept. 2 vs. Youngstown State
Sept. 9 at Penn State
Sept. 16 vs. Oklahoma State
Sept. 30 vs. Rice

Speaking of FCS, Youngstown State was the FCS runner-up last season. Of course, the headliners here though are rival Penn State and Oklahoma State, the latter of which could be the Big 12 favorite. The Nittany Lions will undoubtedly have revenge on their minds at home after the Panthers essentially kept them out of the College Football Playoff last season.

Way Too Early Ranking of the Most Intriguing ACC Non-Conference Games of 2017 (athlonsports.com; Fortuna)

Duke started spring practice on Feb. 3, so there’s really no excuse for you slackers to not be looking ahead to the 2017 college football season, is there?

As spring dates inch closer for more and more ACC teams, we’ll take a look at the top non-conference games awaiting the league once the fall finally arrives.

10. UConn vs. Boston College (at Fenway Park), Nov. 18

Boston College won this game 30-0 last season, so the on-field product may not exactly be the biggest selling point here. Luckily for both programs, though, this game will be played at historic Fenway Park, and anyone who saw the Eagles face Notre Dame at the Red Sox’s home in 2015 knows how cool of an environment that truly is.

9. Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech (at Mercedes-Benz Stadium), Sept. 4

It’s the Labor Day night game, which always delivers. Additionally, it’s opening weekend at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which may or may not be a de facto home game for the Yellow Jackets, depending on how well Volunteers fans travel. Regardless, the winner will have a great momentum boost after both went 9-4 in 2016.

8. Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia (at FedEx Field), Sept. 2

Justin Fuente had a very successful Year 1 in Blacksburg, replacing a legend by capturing the Coastal division and winning 10 games. But the Hokies will have plenty of new faces offensively, and the Mountaineers will provide a stiff test in this neutral-site matchup in Landover, Md., after a 10-win season themselves.

Bills promote Kerner, hire three new members to football staff (espnrochester.com; PR)

The Buffalo Bills announced today that Marlon Kerner has been promoted to director of player engagement & alumni.

In his new role, Kerner will work with the players in the areas of continuing education, family assistance, financial planning and post-football career development. He will continue to oversee all alumni relations matters.

The Bills also announced today that the team has added three members to their football operations staff – Will Greenberg, Denny Kellington and Len Vanden Bos.

Greenberg joins the Bills as the assistant strength and conditioning coach. He comes to Buffalo after spending the past year as the director of strength and conditioning for Southern Utah University, where he oversaw all strength and conditioning programs for SUU’s 15 Division I athletic teams. Prior to SUU, Greenberg worked for Army West Point, Appalachian State University, University of Florida and Clemson University.

Kellington joins the Bills an assistant athletic trainer. He comes to Buffalo from Syracuse University where he served as the head athletic trainer and was responsible for overseeing all athletic training for the football program. Prior to joining Syracuse in 2005, Kellington worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Ohio State University and spent time with the Amsterdam Admirals of the NFL Europe and the Denver Broncos.

We know the ACC Network is going to sell the conference, and ESPN is starting to promote it more as the launch of the cable channel looms... but if we want to know the truth about ACC football, we need to see what others think.

Lockheed: $1.6 billion radar contract will help keep jobs in Salina (PS; Moriarty)

A $1.6 billion Army contract for a mobile radar that tracks incoming rockets, mortars and artillery will help solidify Lockheed Martin's workforce at Electronics Park in Salina, a company official said Monday.

Rick Herodes, program director of the Q-53 radar system, said the contract, the largest single contract in the Salina plant's history, means the company will be making at least 70 more of the radars for the Army over the next five years.

In addition, Lockheed will be making the radars for foreign military customers, Herodes said.

The company said last week it did not anticipate any immediate hires resulting from the new contract. However, Herodes said the new orders will support the approximately 1,600 existing jobs in Salina. The facility has 50 job openings currently, many of them engineering positions, he said.

Lockheed began designing the radar in 2007 to replace two older radars, the Q-36 and Q-37, which could only scan a 90-degree section of the sky at a time. The Army requested a new radar that could scan 360 degrees after troops in Iraq and Afghanistan reported that enemy forces were changing locations to take advantage of the older radar's limitation.

What's the story on Kellington? Is he a Dino guy?
Says he's been at SU since 2005. Maybe he's a Dino casualty
